BOB MOULD IN CONCERT:

Legendary former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman Bob Mould continues to bring inimitable energy to every stage he plays on tour. Whether he’s performing his solo material or favorites from his classic bands, Mould combines catchy power-pop hooks with the intensity of hardcore punk to deliver punchy fun. On standouts like “Celebrated Summer”, “In a Free Land”, and “It’s Too Late”, his plaintive vocals and heartfelt lyrics connect directly with audiences. But he’s also not afraid to kick out a wall of guitar distortion, running around the stage with abandon during his ferocious and freewheeling solos. With a tight rhythm section backing him up, Bob Mould still packs the same powerful punch that has made him a favorite among hard rocking ticket buyers for decades.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bob Mould rose to prominence in the Twin Cities hardcore scene when he founded Hüsker Dü in 1979. Together with drummer/vocalist Grant Hart and bassist Greg Norton, Mould and the group would go on to transcend punk and play a crucial role in the development of alternative rock. After releasing several albums on independent label SST (including 1985’s New Day Rising, which was ranked as one of the best albums of all time by Rolling Stone) the group broke new ground for punk bands by signing with major label Warner Bros. Records. After the band split in 1988 Mould decided to make a drastic change for his 1989 solo debut album Workbook, which featured cleaner guitars and unique touches like cello. The singer-songwriter then formed Sugar in 1992 and released Copper Blue, which venerable British music magazine NME named Album of the Year. Despite the band's success Mould decided to go solo again in 1995, returning with a critically acclaimed self-titled album the following year. Over the course of more than 35 years of both underground toil and mainstream success, Bob Mould has never lost his zest for live performance or knack for endearing songwriting, which he proved on 2016’s Patch the Sky.

    Mould at his best

by Plangent on 9/15/14Bowery Ballroom - New York

Mould played new and classic songs with a ferocity and energy that was completely inspiring. My wife, seeing him live for the first time ever, said it was one of the most joyful performances she has ever seen by a rock musician. There's nothing quite like hearing punk influenced music live when it's played by someone of Mould's caliber.

    Bob Mould

by BMAC257 on 9/15/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

great show, ears were still ringing the next day. Almost ruined by the group of punk wannabee's who decided to slam dance in front of the stage. get a grip.... just saying!

    Not since Sugar...

by rbl1234 on 9/15/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

I haven't seen Bob rock that hard since Sugar at club Babyhead in '93. Really phenomenal show. Good to have you back, Bob. Whatever you did to get you here, it worked.

Bob Mould rips through another great set

by HuskerSugarDu on 3/22/13Bowery Ballroom - New York

Bob Mould continues to be an amazing vibrant performer and appears happier on stage than I've ever seen him. The show opens with the traditional Copper Blue set, goes through a Silver Age segment and then is mainly Husker Du including some gems not heard for quite a while. We were close enough to read the set list on stage and although he blew off Circles and Silver Age, his encore included 4 Husker Du tunes. Bob keeps cranking out great songs and hopefully he will be back again soon. Don't miss him.

Great long high energy fun set

by jp11217 on 2/28/13Bowery Ballroom - New York

Really fun show. I started out really disliking the opening act, Bear In Heaven, but they grew on me. But Bob and the band were great. They were clearly having fun and they played an awful lot of songs from his entire catalog. The encore was at least half of Flip Your Wig, culminating in Divide and Conquer, which was the perfect crescendo for the night.

    Fantastic Show!

by SlopeRocker on 2/28/13Bowery Ballroom - New York

Bob Mould was in top form. He and his band played with passion and intensity throughout the set. The set was a combination of songs from Copper Blue, his latest album Silver Age and some older (and very well received) Husker Du tunes. My ears are still ringing - but - totally worth it! The only downer was an anemic opening act - Bear in Heaven. Their uni-dimensional techno-dance music wore very thin after just a few songs.

    Awesome!

by SSJockey on 11/1/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Great show! Copper Blue sounded as fresh as it did 20 years ago, the band was great . Bob played about 4 songs from the new record and about 6 Husker Du nuggets!

    Jon Wurster Sure Can Drum

by EdinLA on 11/1/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

You know him from Twitter, music videos and The Best Show on WFMU, but guess what? He is more than a multitalented new media superstar. This man can drum! He drummed with the power and authority of the greats like Neal Purt, Peter Chris and Jon Bannum. He helped power a great show by the talented and timeless Bob Mould. It was a great show overall.

    Amazing rock and roll

by Vspacerock on 11/1/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

He played the entire "copper blue" sugar album. Then played his new album! There was so much energy eminating off the stage from just three dudes. This is why bob mould is a legend.

    Rock Candy

by OSFX on 11/1/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Bob is at the top of his game. It was such a joy to see the man still in fine form, ferociously attacking the songs with such abandon. My ears are still ringing.

The Bob Mould Band, October 19 at the Troubadour

    by Mar93 on 3/13/12Troubadour - West Hollywood

The Bob Mould Band didn't put on another incendiary show like they did at Coachella but they didn't have to. Once I saw them at the festival, though, I knew I had to check him/them out again for a full show. I've been a big Sugar fan since the early '90s but never got to see them when they were together. The Coachella performance was amazing, and was all that I could ask for. Maybe Bob had more to prove there or he knew that he had a more captive audience that might be there for other bands and he wanted to really sell himself to them or he was pissed about having such an early slot. Whatever it was, I could be a fan for life just for that Coachella performance if nothing else, though that's not to say that there was a thing in the world wrong with the Troubadour show. Just as many Sugar songs and, predictably, more from his newest solo work. I didn't have any Hüsker Dü stuff until just before this so I didn't know any of that, though what he played of it (seeing the crowd's reaction to it, knowing that that was the classic stuff), was great. I'd love to get a set-list so I could see what I heard but didn't realize the greatness of at the time (except that I recognized "New Day Rising" toward the end) but I couldn't find anything. Bob's solo stuff was always hit or miss with me, as I always liked the raw volume of Sugar and his stuff without them is sometimes too acoustic or too experimental, but he mixed it all up together really well, starting with Sugar tracks, going through solo stuff, and ending with mostly Hüsker Dü. As a retrospective of a career up to this point, it was well-rounded and sounded great and in a great venue for it. Opening was Spiral Stairs, the other guy from Pavement, and it was a likable set but I never got around to investigating the music more.

Disney Hall sucks for rock show

by Pissed2 on 11/23/11Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I knew that the seats we purchased were behind the stage. I assumed that the show would take into account the large number of seats that were sold behind the band and be some version of theater in the round. The sound was only vocal monitors, drums and reverberated din. All of the show was directed to the front of the stage. Only three of the performers acknowledged the people behind them, we were left to watch the backs of their heads.

I see the light and it rocked!

by Withnail345 on 11/23/11Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Terrific show by all parties who joined to celebrate the music of Bob Mould. I saw Bob for the first time back in the 80's at some dodgy little club in the NY and he had exuded an energy that was infectious. Fast forward to the present and a much cleaner and spacious venue and the result was the same. The man rocks and his energy is addictive. The guests did justice to the man and his music . I wish I could do it all over again. Cheers Bob!
