BOB MOULD IN CONCERT:

Legendary former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman Bob Mould continues to bring inimitable energy to every stage he plays on tour. Whether he’s performing his solo material or favorites from his classic bands, Mould combines catchy power-pop hooks with the intensity of hardcore punk to deliver punchy fun. On standouts like “Celebrated Summer”, “In a Free Land”, and “It’s Too Late”, his plaintive vocals and heartfelt lyrics connect directly with audiences. But he’s also not afraid to kick out a wall of guitar distortion, running around the stage with abandon during his ferocious and freewheeling solos. With a tight rhythm section backing him up, Bob Mould still packs the same powerful punch that has made him a favorite among hard rocking ticket buyers for decades.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bob Mould rose to prominence in the Twin Cities hardcore scene when he founded Hüsker Dü in 1979. Together with drummer/vocalist Grant Hart and bassist Greg Norton, Mould and the group would go on to transcend punk and play a crucial role in the development of alternative rock. After releasing several albums on independent label SST (including 1985’s New Day Rising, which was ranked as one of the best albums of all time by Rolling Stone) the group broke new ground for punk bands by signing with major label Warner Bros. Records. After the band split in 1988 Mould decided to make a drastic change for his 1989 solo debut album Workbook, which featured cleaner guitars and unique touches like cello. The singer-songwriter then formed Sugar in 1992 and released Copper Blue, which venerable British music magazine NME named Album of the Year. Despite the band's success Mould decided to go solo again in 1995, returning with a critically acclaimed self-titled album the following year. Over the course of more than 35 years of both underground toil and mainstream success, Bob Mould has never lost his zest for live performance or knack for endearing songwriting, which he proved on 2016’s Patch the Sky.

I felt lucky to be there

by cmacj on 11/23/11Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Heartfelt tribute and a little self-indulgence for an eclectic ensemble honoring one of their heroes. I'm sure glad these people were smart enough to do it while he was still alive rather than as a memorial. It was a powerful reminder of a great time in musical evolution. (Eric Melcher, thanks for introducing me to Husker Du's music in 1983!) Mid-way through the evening I glanced around the venue and thought to myself, "If somebody had told me in college 28 years ago that one day I'd be watching a leading member of American Punk perform in one of Los Angeles' great orchestral concert halls I'd have told him he was high and walked away."

    Great concert overall

by Anonymous on 11/23/11Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Enjoyed the concert - talented musicians and great songs. Drums a little heavy - except , of course, when Dave Grohl was on! - hard to hear other instruments or vocals. Really thought the bassist was good too. Introduced my 16 yr. old daughter to the music and she realy likied it too. A great night of live music!

What a night for See a Little Light!

by AvonCalling on 11/23/11Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

To sit in Disney Hall with a who's who of iconic indie and rock gods on a simple, spare stage was cool to begin with...couple that with the brilliant lyrics, story and music of Bob Mould was once in a lifetime. Such memories made and relived courtesy of this American legend's songbook - the talent honoring the man was amazing; the man himself in perfect form.

I felt like I knew him just though his music. Here he adds readings from his autobiography and extemporaneous asides on various stages of his life, then plays a few selections from the resulting albums. He is so direct and honest and likable. Must-see for any fan.

    great insight to Bob

by dumbek on 6/13/11Birchmere - Alexandria

Fantastic show. A great mix of music, readings from his new book and off-the-cuff discussion about his life and the origins of his songs. The show came in at about 2 hours (that seemed to fly by), so you get a healthy dose of both music and stories. The stories and history were both informative and entertaining and the music was top-notch. Note that this was 100% electric and very loud - not the more sedate 12-string acoustic gig. This is definitely a rock show. Highly recommended. Nice, unique opportunity to catch Bob in a different mode than usual.

I thought he was an amazing solo act, and I really enjoyed the small venue. He was in great voice.

    Bob Mould solo

by sheckyweiss on 10/25/10Montrose Room InterContinental O'Hare - Rosemont

The show was a career retrospective with Bob playing songs from all of his old bands and solo work (except no tunes from Black Sheets of Rain). With a shout out to Bob Schimmel, the show started with acoustic version of Wishing Well (off Workbook) and from there Bob spanned the years, with classic Husker Du songs (No Reservations off Warehouse, I Apologize off New Day Rising), Suger songs and a good sampling of his solo works.

by breenmd on 5/4/10Bluebird Theater - Denver

Bob Mould is persistently great. I've seen with play on many occasions with Husker Du, Sugar, solo, and with his latest band in 2008. Always a great show.

    Bob Mould at teh Bluebird

    by Longshot208 on 5/2/10Bluebird Theater - Denver

I have loved Bob Mould's music since the mid 90s, had to see him live. He did not have a band, just himself, which was a letdown due to his rock background. He still sounded good, and we met him after the show. Very nice guy.

    Bob Mould was great!

by MrMoistOne on 10/22/09Troubadour - West Hollywood

Definite 5 star rating for the show and the venue. The Troubadour was a great place, with friendly staff. Sound was great for both the band and the acoustics in the Troubadour. Bob Mould put on a very energetic show, where he played music from all era's of his career. Just a wonderful experience to see a musician at a venue that has such a storied history.

    Bob Mould

by gmgates on 10/20/09Troubadour - West Hollywood

One of the Power Pop kings put on a great show. I'm not sure what, exactly, he meant when he thanked his bass guitarist for appearing on such short notice. How short of notice was that appearence Bob? This guy released a crankin' bass-line, not just as Bob's guest, but the warm up band used this man's talent for bass guitar, rythym guitar and keyboards. Bob Mould's consumate ability makes it sound like he has two guitarists.

by WhiteGoodman on 10/20/09Troubadour - West Hollywood

Amazing is the only word that could describe last night's performance. A perfect mix of Sugar songs, Husker Du songs, and Bob's solo material. My ears are still ringing, and I've all but lost my voice. Thank you Bob for a perfect evening.
