About

He didn't name it and doesn't refer to it as such, but folk-rock legend Bob Dylan has been on what's become known as his Never Ending Tour since 1988. The longest the Minnesota native has gone without playing a concert since then was a three-month break he took in 1997 to recover from what could have been a fatal chest infection.

Dylan has played more than 2,500 gigs during this incredible run, and despite a catalog that dates back more than a half century, the shows aren't greatest-hits rehashes. The iconoclastic singer-songwriter tends to focus on whatever his latest musical project happens to be, and he often reworks his well-known songs significantly. Dylan's current backing band -- all of whom played on his 2012 studio album, Tempest -- has a bit of a country vibe, and  usually features guitarists Stu Kimball and Charlie Sexton along with Tony Garnier (bass), drummer George Receli (drums), and  Donnie Herron (pedal steel, lap steel, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola).

Dylan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and he would have landed there based on his work in the 1960s alone, when he wrote and recorded some of the most enduring and groundbreaking material in musical history. Though his '60s songbook includes classics like "Blowin' in the Wind," "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "I Want You," he hasn't stopped writing and recording critically acclaimed material, and is constantly mining his archives to release previously unreleased material.

Dylan was ON in Sauget, IL

    by JL420 on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Dylan was "ON" last night at the packed GCS Ballpark in Sauget, IL. Very uptempo show. Dylan hit the stage at 9:20pm, and the show ended at 10:50pm.

    Yea for John Mellankamo

by Joysporty on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

The whole concert was great. But their was this big white tent in the middle of the field. So in some sections you couldnt see the stage at all. They need to do better than that with that tent. At least make it a flat top roof tent instead of pointed. So their was allot of seats that all you could do is hear the music and not see the band. Willie Nelson you couldnt hardly hear at all. His voice was way to low and they didnt have the microphone loud enought for his event. But John Mellankamp ROCKED. And he didnt sing long enought.

Willie and Melencamp great, great show

by Nascarcrazy on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Willie's show was great and as usual he put his heart into his songs and music. Love his guitar playing. Melencamp's show was amazing!! I had not heard him before, but I'd go to see him again, I would highly recommend attending his concerts. As far as the "Star" of the concert; I was greatly disappointed. I've never been a huge Dylan fan, but he did have song I liked; but last night, I thought his voice had left him. Maybe he had a cold, maybe this throat was sore, or maybe he just doesn't have it anymore. Bring on Willie and Melencamp and I'd go again, but I'm sorry to say, I'd not go again for Dylan.

    Godly

by ES89 on 7/3/09Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee

Bob Dylan never missed a beat. The band was amazing, the solos were all perfect. Dylan's voice ripped through the arena. He played guitar twice, and then stayed on his keyboard the rest, as well as harmonica. He played a lot of newer songs with some of his classics thrown in there, closing with "Like a Rolling Stone." He came back out for two encore's, ending with "All Along the Watchtower." Seeing Dylan was almost unreal. He never says a word, aside from crediting the band. Even if your not a fan you'll be blown away by their performance. Willie's set was quite good as well, playing all of his big hits and four Hank Williams Sr. tunes.

    Great summer evening

by execcoach on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Great music, performances and comfortable venue. One big thing missing was a large screen since much of the seating was far from the stage. Totally enjoyed the great headliners, musicians but it would have been an added pleasure to see the three "greats" on a large screen. Willie, John and Bob played a wonderful mix of new and old and the encore by Bob Dylan was a great treat!

Music Great -- The venue was a mess

by TIMM on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

The bands, the ticket and the music was great -- the venue was atrocious -- one entrance for everyone! A long line to get in -- we missed the first act! -- and we were there early... standing on the infiled or good luck finding a seat -- defineitly pick another place to go and see a concert.

    Crystal Clear Voice

    by TheAustin1 on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

This was my fourth Dylan show and by far this was the most clear his voice has ever been. He opened up playing two songs on the guitar which I thought was a treat but then he came out and played a third time with the guitar in the middle of the set which was a great surprise. He moved out from the keyboard and sang in front of the mic too. His set list was pretty good wish I could've heard some other songs but when his voice was a good as it was you can't complain. The fans around can't get any better, it was an all around fun time. Mellencamp was great he has a hell of a band and Willie is just Willie havin a fun time playing timeless classics

    Great show

by Linz on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

The show was great. I loved John Mellencamp...very energetic! Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan were great also. It was great to see so many American music legends on the stage at the same time! I wish they would have done a song together at the end...oh well. Each act had their own feel...it was like going to three mini concerts! Everyone who has any interest in the guys should be at future shows!

    3 Legends @ once-Willie, Dylan and Mellencamp!

    by Kimook13 on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

This was by far the best concert I have ever been too-from the talent themselves who were AMAZING, to the venue @ GCS Ballpark. Everything was perfect and I'd actually have paid more then I did for tickets if I needed to because it was absolutely worth it! A once in a lifetime concert for most of us!

    overall good show

    by thedylanfan69 on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Dylan put on a much better show than I was expecting. John was a great showman and put a lot into his performance. The people running the stadium did a terrible job of getting people into the show and I had the feeling they were much out of their depths. The part of Willies set that I did see was very good.

    Perfect in every way

by Fiftysomething on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Fantastic venue!!! Incredibly well organized, perfect weather, great food and drink, excellent sound quality. Willie, John, and Dylan were all in top form. What unbelievable performances from all three bands! We took our two sons, ages 19 and 16 as they are hardcore Dylan fans. Standing in the front row, they even got a nod from Dylan himself! They said Dylan seemed very up and smiled a lot. (My husband and I sat in the seats with binoculars.) The music was really great - almost 5 hours of it.

    nostalgia city!

by Joker on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Dylan's voice certainly improved in the course of his set, but I miss the old acoustic Dylan. If you are not familiar with his more recent work, the lyrics get lost in the bluesy band sound. It's a good band, but with Dylan it's all about the poetry and I missed most of that. Mellencamp is awesome, lovely female fiddler...we loved every minute. Sorry to have a bad review for the ballpark, but the gate action is incomprehensible. Park your car ($10), walk for miles, then wait 45 minutes in a line to get into the park? What's up with that?

    Great Time

by Pickadilly on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Willie Nelson kicked off the show with his bad-ass outlaw Whiskey River and just set the tone for the rest of the night that it was going to be a hell of a time. John Mellencamp came out a just rocked, you couldn't help but stomp your foot and sing along to Pink Houses. Bob Dylan showed us that he's still one of the greatest artists of all time while churning out the greatest rock and roll song Like A Rolling Stone. Great Show and a lot of fun!

    Catch this show

by lemonade on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Great casual music loving crowd, great American artists, solid comfortable venue. Willie rolled with his sweet tunes, John powered it up with some great classics, and Bob brought the best blues band sound one can hear. The trio brings a terrific blend of classic lyrics, sounds, and nostalgia. A great American evening !

    John Mellencamp stole the show

by Quasar on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Although Bob Dylan was the head liner band, John Mellencamp stole the show, playing all of his hits and some lesser know ones. Mellencamp and his band are so high energy, with the band still enjoying what they do and it shows. I was really looking forward to Bob Dylan, but came away disappointed as I could not hear what he was singing at all. He has a very tight musical band, but they drowned out his vocals, He had never been know for a great voice, but I guess his recent problems with his voice are still there. Willie played played many of his hits, doing a good job, but his band looked very robotic, just going through the motion as if they were not enjoying performing. I enjoyed Willie's guitar very much and was amazed how much sound he can get out of that old thing. His rendetion of "Always on my mind" really got to me. Getting into the venue was tough as the exit to get in was shut down and the alternative, although it moved rather quickly, had a very long line. It woudl seem they need more than one way in and out. I was very surpirsed at how much pot was being smoked, not something I wanted to be around.

    somewhat sad.

by Oldcouple on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

The venue was nice. The weather was magnificent. Willie was Willie, good show. John Mellencamp suffered slightly from a sound system that was not ideal for his sound (lots of top end distortion). Pretty good show in spite of that. Bob came on sounding more like Leonard Cohen, but his pipes started to loosen up about three songs in,and by the fifth one he sounded like an older Dylan, not "the old Dylan". His poetry was still great.

    John Mellencamp was awesome!

    by Anad1978 on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Willie Nelson was good and so was John Mellencamp. I think both singers should have sang longer. Bob Dylan was ok but I don't think I would go again. The Grizzly's needed more bathrooms and food places. I felt I was always standing in line. We were not allowed to take camera's in the stadium. Why?

    Dylan Show

by JmFiasco on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

After great performances by Willie and JM Bob came one and began rocking the house/ballpark. It took him two songs to warm up his voice, but from then on maybe the best show I have ever seen. The band was very tight but Bob led like the leader he is.

    Missed Opportunity!

by PaganKatz on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Opening night of the tour went off without a noticeable glitch. Each setlist was heavy on the hits, and the atmosphere of the GCS Ballpark was comfortable, clean and laid back. The food was really good and the lay out of the "Venue" was asthetic and very practical! Willie was second on the bill, playing to a half full house and in the middle of the afternoon sun. J. Mellencamp was third up and provided a hyped up wall of sound and wonderful stage demeanor. Dylan closed out the night with a 3/4 full moon rising over his left shoulder. Dylan was subtle as usual but an enigma to watch as he worked his way through a diverse catalog. My only and primary bitch about the whole event is that no one sat in on anyone eles's set and more importantly, there was no all-star finale where each of the Icons share each other's music. I was heavily disappointed by this failure to go all the way and take the event to legendary status! Overall, the evening was a wonder to behold and the energy displayed was immaculate, however for the event to go down in my amazing concert list, the boys would have had go the extra mile, which they failed to do............what a missed opportunity!
