About

He didn't name it and doesn't refer to it as such, but folk-rock legend Bob Dylan has been on what's become known as his Never Ending Tour since 1988. The longest the Minnesota native has gone without playing a concert since then was a three-month break he took in 1997 to recover from what could have been a fatal chest infection.

Dylan has played more than 2,500 gigs during this incredible run, and despite a catalog that dates back more than a half century, the shows aren't greatest-hits rehashes. The iconoclastic singer-songwriter tends to focus on whatever his latest musical project happens to be, and he often reworks his well-known songs significantly. Dylan's current backing band -- all of whom played on his 2012 studio album, Tempest -- has a bit of a country vibe, and  usually features guitarists Stu Kimball and Charlie Sexton along with Tony Garnier (bass), drummer George Receli (drums), and  Donnie Herron (pedal steel, lap steel, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola).

Dylan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and he would have landed there based on his work in the 1960s alone, when he wrote and recorded some of the most enduring and groundbreaking material in musical history. Though his '60s songbook includes classics like "Blowin' in the Wind," "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "I Want You," he hasn't stopped writing and recording critically acclaimed material, and is constantly mining his archives to release previously unreleased material.

    The Bob Dylan Show

by classicfan on 7/4/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

This concert should have been called the Willie Nelson show! He was undoubtedly the star! Nelson opened the show with enthusiasm and energy. His guitar playing was incredible and stole the show! Mellencamp was average...only strumming along with the first few songs then just singing for the rest of his set. The violin player that played in Mellencamp's band was fantastic! Dylan closed the show and was also average.

    Willie, John & Bob

by Suez on 7/4/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

It was a great evening! 'Beautiful weather, GREAT venue for a concert. The intro. band was a good pick for the concert mix. Willie was mellow and satisfying. "I Should Have Loved You" brought tears to my eyes! LOVED John's Rock 'n Roll band!!! Could hardly sit still! His band is AMAZING! His vocals ~ top-notch! Bob ~ I remember the Dylan from my high school & college years, an icon! ~ an acoustical guitar, his poetic lyrics . . . so, for me, the fancy stage show affects, the full band, all members in hats, a bit "gimmicky", but the band, very good ~ and Bob, well, the voice is not quite what it was, and it was always a bit weak, but it was BOB ~ well, it didn't matter, cuz we came to celebrate Bob Dylan, a culture onto himself. We had the time of our lives! Bravo to Willie, Superb to John, and WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, BOB DYLAN!

    Bob Dylan Show

by luketohoop on 7/4/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Great summer evening weather. Willie was fun. Mellencamp surprised. His band was excellent. Dylan was Dylan. Some criticized his voice, but maybe they've never heard him live before. Great evening of music and fun at the old ballpark. It would have been special to see any of the main artists collaborate, but that did not happen.

    Dylan was fantastic!

by MikePam on 7/4/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Willie Nelson was good. Mellencamp was great as usual but didn't play long enough! Dylan was fantastic. Could have listened all night. One problem, the whole center section of seats were unable to see the performers due to a large tent covering the sound technicians!! Understandable while sun was beating down but could have been removed after that. Stage could have been a little closer too. But had a great time!!

Willie proved his legendary status. John rocked everyone's faces off. Bob was the true poet that he is.

    This show was awesome!

by hakster on 7/4/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

This show was great! A super value for sure....I've paid more than the ticket price to see ONE of these guys, let alone all 3 of them! And the opening act was good too. Each of the artists - Nelson, Mellencamp, and Dylan - played their best stuff! We brought our 3 kids too (1,5,6) as they are very into music.....they loved it too!

    Willie can hold his own...Dylan..well?

by CPU4U on 7/4/09Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee

At 70 years old or so, Willie Nelson knows how to rock an ampitheater. Not only did he start on time, exactly 7:30, which I don't believe I have ever seen at the Marcus during Summerfest, he played all of his hits for an hour straight! He interacted with the audience and was truly a genuine entertainer. After Willie's set, it took well over an hour to get set up for Dylan, which was a bit long. When he came out, he started in with a song off his new album, then another, then another......I think most of the crowd (which was 55+) expected a mix of old and new, so after several new numbers and nothing old, people started to leave in droves it seemed. We even left after the 10th song, not that it was bad, but it all started to sound the same and I had really hoped to hear at least one classic Dylan song. I heard later that is Dylan's MO for performing; I wish I would have known that ahead of time. Overall, if you don't pay too much, you will enjoy the show. I did think Willie rocked out much better than Dylan and it was worth it to see that legend on stage for even an hour.

by kendyl on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Fantastic..didn't expect a full house. Definitely worth the price of admission..all 3 acts were excellent - I could hear the music wherever I was at the stadium..plenty of volume

Bob Dylan did not interact with the crowd at all!

by Zelda on 7/3/09Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee

We were disappointed that Bob Dylan did not even say a word to the crowd, which made you feel that he didn't appreciate his fans. His band was very good though. On the other hand....Willie Nelson knows how to work the crowd, and his show was enjoyable.

Dylan delivers much needed Good Time!!!

by soundabell on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Awesome lineup, I always enjoy Willie Nelson. It was my first time seeing John Mellencamp, but his loud rock n roll got the children dancing. Always nice to see a two year old dancing away from Mom during the song about fighting Authority. Bob Dylan seemed to bounce around the stage. I really dig the new stuff, smoking Jolene. My bones were shaking more then usual in a public setting, especially during Thunder on the Mountain. Dylan seemed to have the best overall sound. His visual effect were awesome. For a good part of the show, from where I was standing, he cast a giant shadow. Now onto more practical matters. Parking was like going to a third world country and at ten bucks a car, well I would not pay resort prices to camp in the wilderness. I love the gravel with the lines sprayed in orange. One portable toilet outside the One gate they had for everyone. They sell coffee, but did not make any for the show. What??? I bought some peanut m&m s that had gotten wet and they gave me another one in the same condition. The weather was excellent. Nice little clouds rolling overhead till sunset when the sky cleared. I was kind of hoping for fireworks being close to Independence Day and all. You will not find photos or videos of mine, I do believe the artist requested no cameras. Ahem. I left mine at home.

    Mellencamp was headliner

by redknife on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Entire show was very good...however, the sound system either wasn't up to par or there was an echo effect in the stadium that made it difficult to hear. The general admission idea wasn't something that was good for the event...I would have paid extra for an assigned seat. The standing in line waiting for the doors to open was bad...it was lucky that the weather was cool or it would have really been punishing.

    Willie and Dylan rocked!!!

by AuntBea on 7/3/09Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee

Willie was everything I expected, and Bob Dylan sounded great. He sounded better than the last time I saw him, which was about 4 years ago.

    Worst Concert I've Ever Seen

by adaran on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Without a doubt the worst concert I've ever seen. Mellencamp was good, but didn't play very long. So much good music that was not played. Dylan was just bad. I couldn't understand a word he sang or spoke. And the venue was an added flaw. I paid almost $70/ticket and didn't even have an actual seat to sit in. The seats available were horrible because of the big white tent placed directly in front of the stage. How incredibly stupid was that.

    Dylan at Sauget IL

by Chinacat on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Fantastic concert--a once in a lifetime opportunity. Great venue and a surprisingly beautiful evening. The only drawbacks were that the sound for Willie Nelson was missing a mid range and was tinny, but the sound for Mellencamp and Dylan was great. Also we had gotten a written notice with our tickets that we would be let in a half hour early (4:30pm) so we got there early. No one at the venue had any idea of this which was too bad.

Dylan = awesome, others = suck

by Kowalski on 7/3/09GCS Ballpark - Sauget

Though I knew full well that no other performers can touch the greatness that is Robert Allen Zimmerman, I had no idea how much Messrs. Nilsson & Mullenkomp would suck. I would've given the show five stars if not for these two black holes of talentlessness. Oh, and the warmup act was OK. If it were 1915.

    Willie rocked, Dylan sucked!

by NewWillieNelsonFan on 7/3/09Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee

I went to see Bob Dylan, not really caring to see Wilie Nelson. I ended up loving Nelson's performance. He's amazing after all of these years! Once Dylan started people began pouring out of the stadium. He was absolutely terrible. Every song sounds different, his voice is completely shot so he mostly talks instead of singing, and he wouldn't allow the large screens to be turned on. Many older people around us complained that the screens weren't on and they couldn't see, the arena staff said that Bob Dylan told the arena, people came to see me in person not on tv and that he did not want the screens on. Well, not everyone can afford to pay for up close tickets. We ended up leaving after about 45 minutes into his performance. He still had only played about 3-4 songs. Since his voice is shot, he turns every song into a 15 min. music only solo. The band played great, but not what we came to see. Not the same Dylan! I give Willie Nelson a 5++++ star rating, and Dylan a 0. I'm still a fan of his music but will stick to listening to them on vinyl & cd's, never again will I go to one of his concerts. It was terribly disappointing. Not the Dylan I want to remember!

by jizzle on 7/3/09Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest - Milwaukee

It was amazing to see Bob Dylan, the legend, in the flesh. I wished he would've played more of his older "classic" songs, but either way.... it was amazing and i'd do it all over again.
