Years of Rocking has made these guys amazing!!!
by netgnomemom on 7/25/09Grizzly Rose - DenverRating: 5 out of 5Blue Oyster Cult was Awe Inspiring last night. The Grizzly Rose was packed with fans from 18 to 70 yrs old, all of them ready to rock! There were two band before BOC came on, the first one sucked so badly there were times when absolutely no one clapped - it was a country bar, so country bands are to be expected- but their mangled dirge of 'Fat Bottom Girls' made the crowd a bit ugly early on. Luckily they were quickly followed by a local cover band, Crimson Sky, who did a great job of warming up the crowd. They did a pretty decent rendition of a medley of Rush songs, a bit of AC/DC and classic Metallica - the crowd was still chanting BOC, but you could tell that people were having a good time and ready for the main act. When Blue Oyster Cult came on they totally rocked the house! The guitar playing by Donald (Buck Dharma) Roeser was intense, beautiful amazing to watch. Whether he was singing the counterpoint to Eric Bloom or the lead he was spot on. I've seen some bands that just haven't aged well, and the live renditions have made me ache or the originals... Not these guys - I wanted to take a live recording home with me! Eric Bloom's voice is still crystal clear and every song pitch perfect. He smoothly transitioned between the keyboards and guitar - clearly a master of both. The newer members of the band, Ritchie Castellano, has moved from backstage to the front with the retirement of Allan Lanier. Sharing keyboards and guitar with Eric, he is clearly doing what he loves best and it comes through. His energy and enthusiasm is infectious and as expected of any lead playing in BOC, he can SING. They addition of classic metal/hair band Master Bassist Rudy Sarzo has keep the fine BOC bassline going strong. On drums was Jules Radino. Watching Jules play , I can see why BOC drummers don't get old - the energy they expend is enough to light a city on flames (with Rock and Roll)!
BOC played until after midnight with Hot Rails to Hell as the encore. I was having too much fun singing, jumping, dancing and just plain enjoying listening to the Band to actually keep track of the setlist!
Hope they'll come back and play the Grizzly Rose again - it was a fun, fun show to be at!!
