About

Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • Go if you want to be deaf- sound techs are terrible

by Orchid on 7/1/19SugarHouse Casino - PhiladelphiaRating: 1 out of 5

I think the group is fantastic- great musicians and terrify music. the sound technicians are HORRIBLE. we were in the next to the last row and the speakers were so loud we had to leave after 20 minutes. I did not get to hear all the concert. What is wrong with you sound guys? Can't you tell it is too loud? Or are you already deaf? Sometimes the instruments were so loud that we had a hard time hearing the singer. The venue was not huge so sound must be adjusted to the room. I am so disappointed because BS&T are one of my favorite groups!

  • Lead singer left group

by Woodie on 7/1/19SugarHouse Casino - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

Disappointed that lead singer Bo Bice no longer with BS&T. While the band is good the replacement singers did not to justice to the songs. Would not recommend.

  • Great Musicians - Great Venue

by BST Fan on 7/1/19SugarHouse Casino - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

SugarHouse has a great venue. The chairs were placed a bit tightly together, another 2 inches of room on each side would have been nice. In all, the venue is small and a great place to see a performance. And while I would have loved to have seen David Clayton Thomas perform, it was a good show. Each of the musicians are extremely talented. If you like listening to good music, by great musicians, its a great show.

  • The band was awesome but not one original member.

by TommyMarks on 7/1/19SugarHouse Casino - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

  • Great time at Blood Sweat and Tears

by K. F. on 1/14/19IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed the music and the venue. I seemed that all seats had a good view. Blood Sweat and Tears put on a great show. We particularly enjoyed the trumpets, saxophone and trombone.

  • Not Worth It

by Octogenerian on 12/19/18The Wilbur - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

They only played three songs that I recognized. For the cost of the concert plus the cost of parking in Boston, it was not worth it to me. I wanted to hear "my music," not a bunch unknown music. The drummer did a spectacular solo, but overall I do not recommend this concert.

  • Great band.

by Big Guy on 12/18/18The Wilbur - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Felt like I was back in college. Great combination of jazz and rock.

  • Wonderful band

by Cat on 12/18/18The Wilbur - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

They still have it. What a great night. The horn section was fantastic. As was the organ and drummer blew us away. I would go see them again.

  • Great concert. We really enjoyed it!

    by J. R. on 12/18/18The Wilbur - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Band was really good. Loved the drummer and the horns. Great venue to see it in.

  • In name only

    by d. l. on 12/18/18The Wilbur - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Interesting experience. Thought the lead singers should have acknowledged that they were carrying on the tradition, vs saying "we have been in existance for 50 years." Googled group later, and if my count is correct, 175 musicians have performed under the name. But, good marketing.

  • Outstanding effort by a talented group of musicians!

    by S. Harry on 12/18/18The Wilbur - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

This latest iteration of BS&T gave it their all and you were still wanting for more. Nice holiday songs mixed in, but would have liked an all BS&T show with an additional 30 minutes to a rather truncated performance time. Their musicianship was extraordinary. A nice tribute to the original band and their singer David Clayton Thomas.

  • Great venue, very pricey so so drinks

by Slappypotatohead on 5/23/18The Canyon Agoura Hills - Agoura HillsRating: 4 out of 5

Not a bad seat in the house and Blood Sweat and Tears were fantastic. The horns laid it down and the new lead singer, Bo Bice, was excellent. Loved him on American Idol where he placed second to Carrie Underwood. Just a wonderful show. Now the down side to the Canyon Club..we ordered a bake potato each, split a salad and artichoke dip and we each had four cocktails. Bill was $136 before tip. I wouldn’t mind so much, but after the first drink, I swear they were weaker and weaker. Four Old Fashioneds and didn’t even have the tiniest buzz? Next time I’ll order beer, which they only serve in cans, but at least I’ll know what I’m getting. But overall, a nice night and we will return for more concerts at this venue.

  • Blood, Sweat & Tears at the Saban

by MoTheDog on 5/22/18Saban Theatre - Beverly HillsRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing show! These players blew me away with their precision and their chops, all while staying faithful to the original recordings. The horn section hit every note and had impressive solos. The singer did a superb job of covering these legendary tunes.

  • BS&T is a great group

by kiamama on 5/22/18Saban Theatre - Beverly HillsRating: 5 out of 5

The Saban Theatre is an intimate setting for seeing any performance. Blood Sweat and Tears sounded great and performed old hits and new music. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening! Keep up the entertainment.

  • Great concert, a lot of fun!!!

    by gb211257 on 5/22/18Saban Theatre - Beverly HillsRating: 5 out of 5

Different times different musicians but still the same great band. Timeless song and excellent performers. Definitely worth it. I really enjoyed the concert and I'll be attending again next time they are in town.

If you want to hear jazz from the village from 1962 this your show. If you want to hear vintage Blood Sweat and Tears save your money.

  • no blood, limited sweat, no tears

by complawyer on 5/22/18Saban Theatre - Beverly HillsRating: 3 out of 5

as always, the music was great, however during most of the concert, it overwhelmed bice's vocals. he's not bad, entertaining, but david clayton thomas he ain't. my wife was very disappointed as she could make out few lyrics, and consequently couldnt recognize even familiar songs.
