About

Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • Unworthy Lead Singer

by Dorothy on 10/7/19The Space at Westbury Theater - WestburyRating: 1 out of 5

First, i was so disappointed that Bo Bice was not foing the show. Second, the new lead singer just did not sing good enough to be in B,S&T. He started each song ok but fell flat afterwards. I grew up listening to them and felt let down when we left.

  • although I love their music the performance is to short .

by ROYSTER on 10/7/19The Space at Westbury Theater - WestburyRating: 3 out of 5

They need to play some of their less popular material. Popular does not equal best. Add Snow Queen, and Maiden Voyage to show how diverse this group was.

  • Wow!!! Totally amazing.

This group is totally amazing. I believe it is the best live show I have ever seen. The lead singer was awesome and the musicians were all stellar in their own right. They deserve a standing ovation and then some. Thank you Blood Sweat and Tears

I had never seen Blood Swear & Tears before, and I hadn't realized there had been a constant turn over of musicians, but the current ensemble of musicians were fantastic it was great to hear all the BS&T songs I’ve cherished over the years, and the musicians were top notch.

  • Special Date Nite

by Marie M on 9/11/19Jefferson Performing Arts Center - MetairieRating: 4 out of 5

BS&T’s 9/8/19 concert did not disappoint. New singer & band were amazing. Great musicians took us back to the original sounds. Of course the finale was what we had been waiting for since we had danced to it on our 1st date 50 years ago & it brought smiles & tears. My only negative is that 1 1/2 hour was not enough. Hurry & come back to NOLA.

i know there are no original members, but after almost an hour into the show there still wasn't one popular bst's number. they are accomplished musicians, but not what i came to hear. don't know about the rest of the show, i gave up and hit the casino.

  • Somewhat disappointed

A group with this history draws a somewhat older crowd who is there to hear the music...songs they know and remember. Disappointed in the number of their songs that were played. The dueling trumpets and drum solo took up time from this music. I expect professional players to be good...don't have to prove it. The absolute last song was the one we went to hear....our song...You Make Me So Very Happy. If they hadn't played this I would be dreadfully disappointed. The new lead singer has a great voice.

  • Mediocre

The overall sound was very good. The tempo of some songs was slow. There were missed audio and lighting cues.

  • Awesome

It was the best concert we have been to lately. The band put on an awesome show. Wish they would have told us how long each member had been with the group.

  • Great show!

by GregM on 7/5/19Ameristar Casino and Hotel - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Even though there were no founding members this show was a bunch of fantastic musicians that stayed true to the authenticity of the music. Horn section was tight and as good as any I’ve ever seen. The drummer was sublime and really shined when soloing. The bass player was spot on and never missed a opportunity to show his talent. Castro on guitar was as good as any you’ll ever see and his voice was very good on a few of the songs he sang. But the real star of the show was Keith Paluso. He stayed true to the melodies while making them his own. He was always in the pocket and sang with feeling as if he wrote them. For only being with the band a month, he was on point and didn’t miss a beat! Very impressive band and I’d definitely recommend them.

  • Nice Nostalgia Concert

by SanLouisKid on 7/3/19River City Casino & Hotel - St LouisRating: 3 out of 5

I saw this group a few years earlier with a different lineup. Maybe because that venue was smaller but the sound seemed better then than this show. Instead of having everyone spread out as far as possible across the stage they could have placed them together for better effect. The drum solo was amazing but the bass player stood right beside the drummer which just happened to block my view. It sounded great but I didn't see anything. It was like listening to a recording. Bottom line: Enjoyable but not as good as it could have been.

  • jazzy cool

We sat up in the bleacher area near the center. Really enjoyed the seat. Loved the show. The singer is in his first year with the band. He Knocked it out of the park. Very good show. Highly recommend!!

  • Loved it

Best venue. An evening of dinner, a little gambling and wonderful shows always. Getting there this time was a challenge but called and got a route. Great venue.

  • BS&T Concert - Kansas City

by K. T. on 7/2/19Ameristar Casino and Hotel - Kansas CityRating: 1 out of 5

The venue was awful. We paid extra to have 1st row, center tickets. Our seats were 3 feet below the stage & the stage had monitors across the front which made it difficult to see. The band had no energy....basically stood flatfooted & played their instruments. The lead signer who has replaced David Clayton Thomas said he was "on" the Voice, which translated into he didn't win the Voice. He has only been with BS&T for a month. He was mediocre to say the least. I also didn't like being "preached to" between songs. I love their music but this performance was awful.

  • A Blast from the Past (and Present)

by mukwaman on 7/2/19Ameristar Casino and Hotel - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

BS&T are still with us with all the familiar and brilliant songs and instrumentals that stirred our blood so many years ago. The current batch of musicians are on top of their game and everyone of them stood out with outstanding solos and blended play. While we may still yearn for David Clayton Thomas, the singer was up to the standard demanded for some of the most voice-taxing renditions ever written. Thank you for keeping the band and the music of BS&T alive and flourishing.

  • not as good as they used to be

by azgnhn on 7/2/19Ameristar Casino and Hotel - Kansas CityRating: 1 out of 5

The lead singer was really new(1 month) and the rest of the group were just not very good. Some groups age with grace and stay fresh some just get stale
