Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • Blood, Sweat & Tears played very enjoyable music

by Cindy4431 on 6/28/16Resorts Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

I've always enjoyed horn bands, they were my favorites. I was very impressed with Bo Bice's voice, he captured David Clayton Thomas with excellence. However, the show was really short. It began at 8:15 p.m. and ended by 9:30 p.m. That was with their encore. So although the music was fabulous, the show was way too short.

  • Blood, Sweat & Tears still rock.

by Chalky321 on 6/28/16Resorts Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Most of the group looked too young to be originals, but they are all great musicians, and the charts are true to the arrangements we're used to hearing. Bo Bice has an awesome voice, and does credit to Al Kooper and David Clayton-Thomas' legacies. A thoroughly enjoyable show.

True to the original renditions, the current lineup didn't disappoint. Bo Bice was close enough to David Clayton Thomas to satisfy the listener's need for that soulful sound without losing his own identity in the process. He was playful with the audience and respectful to the band's historical relevance. The musicians were all featured at different times of the show as well, all delivering the goods.

  • Felt like 1970 all over again!!

by wdbnder on 5/16/16Blue Ocean Music Hall - SalisburyRating: 5 out of 5

I admit I was a little disappointed when I realized that none of the band was original as they walked on stage. Then the music started and to my amazement, Bo Bice, Amercian Idol's runner up to Carrie Underwood, started to sing!!! OMG!! If you were listening to them on the radio you would have sworn it was all the original members!! Band was energetic, Bo was great with the audience and the drummer finomial! Venue is always great to go to with a close experience and always easy in and out.

I was very surprised because I knew nothing about Bo Rice. He sounds a lot like the old singers. He is a good fit for the band. I hope to see them again. Great job!

Blood, Sweat and Tears was the best band I have seen live. I saw them in 1972 and they are even better now. I am a musician my self and most of my family are also musicians. If you have them again I will come back and bring my family and friends.

  • Blood Sweat & Tears!

by Anonymous on 3/21/16The Event Center at Hollywood Casino - Charles TownRating: 4 out of 5

BS&T with Bo Bice was great! The musicianship of the band is top-notch! Solos were fabulous, especially the drum solo! Great sound, well-played and sang. Bo Bice sings the band's most popular hits as good or better than the original singer. Really good set and then a great encore that included covers by Allman Brothers & Ides of March. If you get a chance, go see them!

  • Blood, Sweat & Tears bring down the house

by Fonduedog on 3/21/16The Event Center at Hollywood Casino - Charles TownRating: 4 out of 5

B, S & Tears are excellent musicians, although they are not the original group that started in 1967. I love the brass instruments and the drummer was outstanding. Bo Bice has a strong voice that seems to fit very well with this type of music. The old favorites were played, such as "God Bless the Child" and "Spinning Wheel." The time flew by. Very enjoyable concert.

  • Amazing musicians

by W8fairy on 3/21/16The Event Center at Hollywood Casino - Charles TownRating: 4 out of 5

Great show, playing the old favorites. I liked the way they took the time to spotlight the band members to demonstrate their musical talents. The drummer is absolutely awesome. Bo was great. His voice matches well with the original singer. I wasn't crazy about his stage presence, but he has an amazing voice.

The show was great and this was a good match for Bo Bice.

  • All about jazz

by Pltm0629 on 3/21/16The Event Center at Hollywood Casino - Charles TownRating: 2 out of 5

With the exception of a few great songs, this show seemed to be more about free form jazz with trumpet player piercing your ear drums.

  • Great show but questionable seating

by Roxypaws on 2/16/16Morongo Casino Resort and Spa - CabazonRating: 3 out of 5

Overall, the show was great but a little short! The concert lasted a 75 minutes. The seating was terrible since we sat in fixed chairs made for seminars, not concerts

The show was awesome! BS$T played all my favorite songs. The horn section was terrific as always. I wish they would have played longer.
