About

Black Stone Cherry was founded in 2001 by guitarist and lead vocalist Chris Robertson and John Fred Young, drummer and backing vocalist, who were long-time friends. Joining forces with Ben Wells on rhythm and lead guitars and Jon Lawhon on bass guitar, the band started out by playing gigs in their local town of Edmonton, Kentucky. John Fred Young is the son of rhythm guitarist Richard Young from the Grammy Award-winning band The Kentucky Headhunters, which Black Stone Cherry cite as one of their earliest influences, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Muddy Waters and Cream. In their early days the band rehearsed and wrote in the same farmhouse that The Kentucky Headhunters had used as rehearsal space.
The band quickly gained a following for their live shows in their home state of Kentucky, and by 2005 they were signed to Roadrunner Records. The band released their first eponymously titled album in 2006 and were given a huge welcome back at their home town, where they performed for over 1500 fans. A live album recorded at London's Astoria in October 2007 was produced to mark the final show of their first international tour and was released in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies. In the same year the band won an award for Best New Band at the London Classic Rock Awards.
It is their tours for which the band is best known. An arena tour of the UK and Ireland in 2008 saw them take to the stage with Whitesnake and Def Leppard, with Black Stone Cherry as the opening act. May 2009 saw the band supporting Nickelback on the European leg of their Dark Horse Tour. They have supported Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company and were the headline act at the 2013 Download Festival.

  • Excellent Show....bad sound!

by TimPlaz on 8/4/14Upstate Concert Hall - Clifton ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Black Stone Cherry played well as usual each time I seen them. This last time, the sound-man had the music too loud in which you struggled to hear the words from the singer(s).

  • Black Stone Cherry, One More!

by nowhistling on 8/4/14Upstate Concert Hall - Clifton ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Great Show in Clifton Park NY, Upstate Concert Hall. Myself and 3 buddies traveled 4 hours to see our favorite band. They sounded great! played some great songs. We had seen them twice before as a supporting band for other shows, "Theory of a Dead Man and Chicken-foot" At this show they were the Headliner!, hoping they would have time to dig deep into their collection of songs! One Major Disappointment!! No Encore Set!! What!! Isn't it just a given to return for an Encore to give extra thanks to your Fans! As we hooted and yelled and yes Whistled for BSC to return we were scolded by the bouncers at USCH! - "I told you not to Whistle!! " What the Crap! Is this what it's come to for a Concert!! Granted there wasn't a ton of fans at this show, we are still Fans. Would still go to see them again and again! One of the better bands out there today, actually buy the entire CD!

  • We As Human stole the show!

by PODwarriorforGOD on 8/1/14The Shelter - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

First off, I would like to say thanks to 101.1 WRIF for getting the first 101 tickets to the public for $10.10, which makes any show a steal at that price. I was utterly shocked that so few people came to this event. I can only believe it was because the radio almost never plays any of the bands that were on this card. All three bands that played this show were incredible talents (Fifth Freedom, We As Human, and Black Stone Cherry), even though two out of the three were "southern hard rock", and I am not a fan of that genre. They all brought everything they had and left it on the "stage" along with some sweat. Best crowd participation goes to the We As Human fans (Humanoids), who chanted the choruses right along with lead front man Justin Cordle. You would never have know they were short two of their line-up (Justin F. and Dave), because they tore it up. Great venue for up close and personal time with all the bands. The Shelter is a class act in the heart of Detroit.

  • Awesome Show

by TheDeige on 7/30/14A and R Music Bar - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

By far one of the best concerts I have ever been to. The guys of each band were super nice and very interactive with the crowd. The merchandise and bands hanging out after their shows, were also huge pluses. After going to see this show, I love these bands even more :) Only a couple downfalls, which I believe are on the venue, not the bands, and why I give 4 stars instead of 5, audio wasn't the greatest for two of the three bands, and it was very hot and humid inside for the first two bands. Other than that, Awesome Show!

  • BSC knows how to rock!

by Kosmicdancer on 7/25/14A and R Music Bar - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The band is awesome. Well written lyrics set to heavy American music. The sound was great given a small venue. THE ONLY REASON FOR THE 4 STARS WAS THE VENUE. It was 92 very humid degrees when the doors were unlocked. There was no moving air in the entire bar. No ceiling fans, nothing. 1door opened. 5 minutes before Black Stone Cherry took the stage, the side 'garage' door was lifted. The bands didn't even have fans on them. I do not know how they performed-but, Damon, they endured and rocked us out!! I would see BSC again and again-and plan on it. But will reconsider the venue in the middle ofsummer.

All bands were extremely engaging and the members of We as Human were anxious to meet fans!

  • Best Show Ever!

Excellent show! These guys are there to rock and never disappoint!

  • Black Stone Cherry Rocks!!

    by KLS06 on 7/25/14A and R Music Bar - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing a show at the A&R is awesome. It is such an intimate venue. We had the opportunity to spend a good portion of the evening with the opening act Fifth Freedom, and the lead singer for We As Humans. They hung with the crowd and were great. Then of course there was Black Stone Cherry. I've always liked them but live they are incredible. They rocked much harder in person. My wife and I have decided that whenever they are close we are going.

  • by Bilbrew on 7/23/14Bogart's - CincinnatiRating: 5 out of 5

Black Stone Cherry puts on a great show. Very high energy. Only wish they played longer. Great show especially for the low price.

  • Black Stone Cherry always a good show!

It is always a fun and energetic show with BSC and We As Human is a fantastic supporting band!

  • Black Stone Cherry is an amazing sounding band.

    by Taylor23 on 7/19/13Chameleon Club - LancasterRating: 5 out of 5

This band has an amazing sounding band. The lead singers voice mixes so well with the sound of the band. Very strong lyrics and amazing music. Amazing energy they create with and for the fans. I believe this band has awesome potential. They make a show affordable for fans to see and playing small venues allows the fan to see the band from 40 feet away and become part of the show instead of sitting 1/2 a mile away. I first saw this band in Hershey, Pa in 2012 and Blind Man was the first song I heard live, I was hooked from that point on. Thank you very much Kentucky.

  • Expected better sound

    by Soundman5 on 9/2/12Beaumont Club - Kansas CityRating: 2 out of 5

Would not recommned at this venue, the sound was very muddy and would have liked for the band to have played more of their songs and left off the Joe Walsh 20 min song, and wish they would have done an an encore. But over all still glad I saw the band.

  • BSC rocked, other bands not so much

by DAtongieboys on 9/1/12Beaumont Club - Kansas CityRating: 3 out of 5

Black stone cherry put on a awesome show like they usually do. The venue was a lot smaller than other venues I have been to but it made for a much more intimate experience. Mad libby and obsidian were average, bringing my rating down to the three stars.

  • by twoclogs on 9/1/12Beaumont Club - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show. BSC kicked some ass. Will see them every time they do a show in my area.

  • Black Stone Cherry is a Rockers MUST-GO SEE!

by OzarkButterfly on 8/26/12Black Oak Amp - LampeRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen BSC in concert 16 times and will definitely go see them again! Incredible Lyrics and Kick-A$$ beat! Fun Fun FUN!!! Not a dull moment at any of the concerts I've attended... Just wished they'd venture back to the Hillbilly Woods area :)~

  • by Anonymous on 8/20/12Madison Theater - CovingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Phenominal show! Best live show I have seen in a long time

  • BCS has been better

by BCSlongtimefan on 8/19/12Madison Theater - CovingtonRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen Black Stone Cherry before and they were awesome but this show they seemed tired, road weary and not happy.....The drummer was hurt...The sound man killed them. They sounded awful. The 2 opening bands sound was better. Stellar Revival was very good..I never heard of them or saw them before and they were impressive. I'll still go see BSC whenever I can.... The crowd at The Madison Theater was no help....its Kentucky....the bands hometown....and the crowd was lame....

  • BSC and Stellar Revival...... AMAZING!!!

    by STELLARLOVER1 on 8/18/12Madison Theater - CovingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Shared an amazing evening w/ my concert buddy!! BSC and Stellar Revival, our 2 fav bands!! Spent an amazing evening w/ Stellar!!!

  • Black Stone Cherry rocked and rolled the right way

by LukWrmWtr on 8/16/12Headliners - ToledoRating: 5 out of 5

BSC was on top of their game as always, full intensity for a very small crowd. Like the rock and roller warriors they are they played a tight set with plenty of crowd interaction. Realu and Stallar Revival were both very good and brought plenty of drive and energy to their sets as well . The only negative was how bad the first 2 local bands were .....WOW they were bad..... Black Stone Cherry is always worth price of admission and they roll like all rock bands should ,but so few do.

  • BLACK STONE CHERRY & STELLAR REVIVAL ROCKED IT!

by HELINX on 8/15/12Headliners - ToledoRating: 5 out of 5

First time at Headliners actually, and I must say BLACK STONE CHERRY once again put on the STELLAR performance that they are known for even though this was a small crowd of about 100 people. They are TRULY one of the best ROCK BANDS on the music scene! BSC hung out afterwards with fans which is really important to me. The opening band STELLAR REVIVAL were nothing short of AMAZING! From Miami, never heard of them, but after listening to them play the first minute they took stage, I was like WOW, and jaw dropped as their style was stellar! That band is GOING PLACES! No disappointment with this show except the sound system was not the greatest, but with us being so close to stage it did not matter.
