About

Black Stone Cherry was founded in 2001 by guitarist and lead vocalist Chris Robertson and John Fred Young, drummer and backing vocalist, who were long-time friends. Joining forces with Ben Wells on rhythm and lead guitars and Jon Lawhon on bass guitar, the band started out by playing gigs in their local town of Edmonton, Kentucky. John Fred Young is the son of rhythm guitarist Richard Young from the Grammy Award-winning band The Kentucky Headhunters, which Black Stone Cherry cite as one of their earliest influences, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Muddy Waters and Cream. In their early days the band rehearsed and wrote in the same farmhouse that The Kentucky Headhunters had used as rehearsal space.
The band quickly gained a following for their live shows in their home state of Kentucky, and by 2005 they were signed to Roadrunner Records. The band released their first eponymously titled album in 2006 and were given a huge welcome back at their home town, where they performed for over 1500 fans. A live album recorded at London's Astoria in October 2007 was produced to mark the final show of their first international tour and was released in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies. In the same year the band won an award for Best New Band at the London Classic Rock Awards.
It is their tours for which the band is best known. An arena tour of the UK and Ireland in 2008 saw them take to the stage with Whitesnake and Def Leppard, with Black Stone Cherry as the opening act. May 2009 saw the band supporting Nickelback on the European leg of their Dark Horse Tour. They have supported Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company and were the headline act at the 2013 Download Festival.

  • Best band I have seen 8n years

    by Kimplete 2868 on 5/3/22TempleLive Wichita - WichitaRating: 5 out of 5

Gave me faith in Rock N Roll again. Before the show my friend and I were saying that live music in general was not what it once was. The musicians dont look like musicians anymore. They are wearing their scubby street clothes or pajamas. Nobody dresses the part. The energy levels arent there. No head banging and jumping around like Eddie Van Halen or Angus Young. Theres no SHOWMANSHIP, AND SOMETIMES NOT EVEN A REAL MUSICIAN ON STAGE. NO REAL IMSTRUMENTS BEING PLAYED. Blasphemy I say!!! NO LONG HAIR AND HEADBANGING. JUST 3 NERDS WITH SKINNY JEANS AND FAKE CHUCKYS THAT ARE STUCK IN CEMENT IN FRONT OF A MIC THAT MAY OR MAY NOT EVEN BE TURNED ON... NOBODY APPEARING TO EVEN BE ENJOYING THEMSELVES. BUT THIS BAND DELIVERED. THEY CHECKED EVERY SINGLE BOX! WHO HAS MORE FUN THAN THESE DUDE'S??? AND SO MUCH TALENT. NOT ONE OF THESE GUYS IS LACKING IN ENERGY, RAW TALENT,SHOWMANSHIP, OR FUN FACTOR! AND EVERY ONE OF THEM ARE EASY ON THE EYES. THEY 100% GAVE ME BACK MIND BLOWING ROCK AND ROLL LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

  • Tornado

by AmeriKan on 5/2/22TempleLive Wichita - WichitaRating: 5 out of 5

BSC always puts on a killer show. Missed this one due to the tornado that touched down a few miles away, we had to take shelter. I thought for sure the show would be cancelled. But BSC did the most rock n roll thing ever and played anyways and I’m sad I missed it, did get to see a tornado though so that was cool. These guys are a band I don’t ever miss play when they’re in the area and I’ll for sure catch them next time.

  • Great Main Event

by Timmer on 5/2/22TempleLive Wichita - WichitaRating: 5 out of 5

I wish we would have known there was going to be 3 opening bands. We live a hour away. We could’ve made better arrangements for our dog. We had to leave early to get home to care for him.

  • Great show!

by Jerry on 12/18/21The Loft - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Sound was great! They played all the hits and a few to be classics. The opening act, the Georgia Thunderbolts was also very good! All in all, a great night of soulful southern rock!

  • MUST SEE

by VVLudwig on 12/18/21The Loft - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Blackstone Cherry just played a great small venue in ATL and absolutely blew the roof off. One of the best rock shows of 2021- a MUST SEE band. Georgia Thunderbolts opened and also “ rocked the house”!

  • A must see band if you like southern rock

by Mainecat on 12/18/21The Loft - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Great show and band. This show was towards the end of their tour so they were very tight. Lots of energy, good setlist and Chris sang great. Played mostly newer songs, but also a few off the first 2 cd's. John Fred Young is an awesome drummer and Chris Robinson not only sings but plays leads, very entertaining to watch. Another great thing, the show was only $20!

  • Great show, great venue

by Steve on 12/18/21The Loft - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The crowd was less than I expected, but is was a Wednesday. Black Stone Cherry played very enthusiastically regardless. The sound was very good, the lighting good but nothing special. I'm glad I made the trip downtown to catch the show!

  • Great show

by Marcelo Buby on 10/9/21The Vogel at Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red BankRating: 5 out of 5

Despite of an empty house the show was incredible. Great performance and sound quality of all bands.

  • Awesome show!

by William on 10/9/21The Vogel at Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red BankRating: 5 out of 5

Love these guys, every time seeing them is a great experience. It was our first time seeing the Georgia Thunderbolts but loved them also. First time attending an event at the Vogel, was a different experience, will have to see a few more shows before making a judgement on the venue itself.

Great show in a small venue. This is the second time I have seen Black Stone Cherry and neither time was disappointing. Great interaction with fans, good sound quality, and tons of energy. These guys really know how to put on a show.
