About

That face, that name, that sneer. Rock icon BILLY IDOL, known for a plethora of hit singles including “Rebel Yell,” “White Wedding,” “Dancing With Myself” “Eyes Without A Face” and many more, returns this summer to perform at The Outer Fields, Western Springs on Sunday, January 19.

Sharing the stage for an epic Sunday afternoon and evening of live music are seminal New Zealand artists Stellar* and Elemeno P.

Artisanal beers, wines and great food, as well as fun attractions, will add to the festival ambience of the day. The event is GA/All ages so bring the family and settle in for a late Summer’s Sunday of great entertainment.

An early architect of punk rock's sound, style, and fury, Billy Idol remains to this day a true rock 'n' roll icon. From punk pioneer to global superstar, Billy Idol has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades. His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trend. Born in 1955 in Stanmore, North London, Idol spent several formative years living on Long Island, NY as a child before returning to the UK and emerging as a central figure of the British punk movement. As part of the infamous Bromley Contingent and a fan of the Sex Pistols, Idol was inspired to front the pioneering British punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band’s split in 1981. Determined to break through in America, Billy Idol hooked up with guitar genius Steve Stevens and a crucial musical partnership was forged.

Idol’s lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into the mainstream as one of MTV’s first megastars, making him one of the most recognisable faces in pop music, while selling out arenas everywhere he played.  He has sold 40 million albums while scoring numerous platinum albums worldwide, nine top forty singles in the US and 10 in the UK.  Hit singles include ‘Dancing With Myself’, ‘Hot In The City’, ‘Eyes Without A Face’, ‘Rebel Yell’, ‘Mony Mony’, and arguably Idol’s most famed song ‘White Wedding’.

Legendary four-piece band Stellar*, fronted by the dynamic singer/songwriter/guitarist Boh Runga, are Sony New Zealand’s highest selling Kiwi band. Dominating the airwaves and charts throughout the early 2000’s Stellar* boast three Top 10 albums, 9 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and a legion of fans throughout the country.

Known for their pulsating live performances, Stellar* return in 2020 to perform a series of special shows to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their 5 star debut album MIX. That album sold 80,000 copies (5 x Platinum) and generated five top 20 singles – ‘Part Of Me’, ‘Violent’, ‘Undone’, ‘Every Girl’ and ‘What You Do (Bastard)’ – all massive radio singles and indelibly etched in the Kiwi music landscape.  Expect a dynamic set featuring MIX in full, more hits, plus their killer version of Sharon O’Neill’s ‘Maxine’ – which took the 2017 Vodafone NZ Music Awards by storm.

In the early 2000’s Elemeno P erupted onto the New Zealand rock scene, seemingly from out of nowhere. A four-piece with straight-arrow, energetic, power-pop anthems. A succession of massive hits such as ‘Verona’, ‘Every Day’s A Saturday’, ‘Fast Times in Tahoe’ and ’11.57’ followed.

Equipped with a fun-loving attitude, Elemeno P soon became household favourites across the nation, releasing a trifecta of top tier albums in the space of six years.

The band’s debut album ‘Love & Disrespect’ was released in 2003, reaching number #1 on the New Zealand album charts and went on to sell triple platinum. Two more albums would follow, selling Platinum and Gold respectively and leading to the band taking home Best Group at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2008. Elemeno P make a welcome return to the stage in January 2020.

  • Idol Full of Energy - Rocked the Riv!

by Lynndow on 9/12/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Billy Idol still rocks and looks good! He still brings the energy to his show and keeps that pearly white smile shining most of the time. Billy Idol is still enjoying the performance and showed gratitude to his fans! The fans fill the room with energy, dancing, and singing from start to finish. Good time.

  • Billy Idol/Slash

by VJanke on 9/11/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Well, we got to the Riv and it was typical. They hadn't finished letting people in... Slash was already on stage by the time we got there. The band was good, the vocalist had an exceptional range... But it was a little weird. It was like a goth metal band doing G'n'R cover tunes... Slash is an amazing guitarist and he always will be, but... either cover G'n'R or do goth metal. Not both, please. Billy Idol was outstanding. I didn't get to see him in the 80's, and while I'm disappointed that I missed those earlier tours, this show was amazing. Older and more mature, but so am I! Billy did songs from his entire 30+ year career including Gen X tunes. Steve Stevens was incredible. He is the ultimate guitarist. Too bad he never got the recognition he deserves here in the states. I would go see this show again!

  • Billy Idol with Slash.

The show was pretty awesome. I was very happy that he played Generation X music.

i thought slash was great. but i'm sick of the opening act getting bad sound. billy idols sound was 10 times better because he was the headliner. i've been in bands myself and i know what goes on with band jealousy. slash is not an opening act. he proved that thursday night- with more cheering than idol got. it's just really unfair that slash has to put up with this sort of thing. the show was great, but would have been amazing if given the same quality of sound as steve stevens and idol.

  • Billy Idol was still the greatest!!!!!!!!!

Even after all these years... Billy Idol still has it!!!! He rocked it out on the stage. He was super amazing. Steve was still unbelievable on the guitar. You just couldn't believe your eyes and ears!!!

Best $50 I have spent in years for a live concert. Billy Idol and Steve Stevens are amazing and if you are a fan of Live Rock N Roll Music...this is a must see show / event. Outstanding!

Wow, Billy Idol put on a great concert. Slash was good too. This was our first time at the Riviera Theatre, seating in the balcony was good but the theatre was hot. They need to get air conditioning. We ventured down to the first floor by the stage and had a good time.

Billy Idol was great. Slash is awesome. One of the best shows of the year and I've been to 30. Also awesome, X Japan, Wolfmother, Soundgarden, Hell Yeah, STP, Puscifer.

  • Arrive late if Slash is on the card!

by Eternaljor on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Billy as always was amazing! Slash, or should I say, the Guns N Roses coverband, was PAINFUL but as soon as Billy got on stage the show took off!

  • Billy Idol & Slash

by lyfizgud on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This concert was great...Slash's band (Todd Kerns especially) was AWESOME...I REALLY enjoyed their performance...Billy did a GREAT job as well...and looks HOT...dude's got the body of a 20 year old...HUBBA HUBBA...the two disappointments were that Billy played a lot of unfamiliar music and left out a lot of very well known songs...Cradle of Love, Catch My Fall...I really missed those two tunes...the other complaint is that, while Steve Stevens is a GREAT guitar player, the show focused as much on him as Billy...and when it's VERY hot and VERY crowded, that dragged things out a bit...but all in all it was great and I would recommend Billy & Slash to EVERYONE!!!!Billy interacted w/ the crowd a lot and was very funny...great facial expressions and energy.

  • Still has it

by ciberpunk on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Billy Idol understands how to perform and generate energy in his performances. His recent tour mixes up old and new, forgotten gems and classic Idol. Stevie Stevens is still amazing and has become timeless. The show was awesome.

  • Billy Idol Amazing!!!!

by graphicist on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I was really impressed by Billy's performance. He sounds just as good as he did in the 80's. I think he has one of the most talented bands in the industry. Steve Stevens on guitar and Jeremy Colson on drums ROCKED it all night!!!

  • Billy Idol was not the greatest

by WorkNight on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Slash was so much better than Billy Idol. He did all the Guns stuff so well, I was waiting for Axl to jump out from the side ofthe stage and start belting the tunes. Brought back a lot of memories of the rock n roll good times. As far as Billy, way to much focus on Steve Stevens rather than Billy just going up and doing his thing. Waiting for the hits also sucked pretty bad too. Just my opinion, that's all.

  • The Rebel yelled & Slash killed it.

by MartaMayhem on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Billy is still the legendary icon as I remember. He sang a few of his hits and some old Generation X stuff. Didn't care much for Steven Stevens solo jam sessions, but he still rocked his heart out on stage. Great seeing Billy perform... and with Slash too—it was a perfect match! Slash played a few rad G-'N-R classics, "Civil War" being my favorite. And Slash, the Shred Lord himself, killed it when he paired up with Billy and the group to end the set. I can now die a happy woman.

  • Billy Idol and Steve Stevens

by WhoaNelly on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Billy still sounds great and Steve Stevens was in rare form! Billy's ageless pipes and physique provided a great show with a lot of energy. Stevens might have taken a few too many and long solo's by the end I was feeling like "okay we get it, your amazing but were here to see and hear Billy!". Curious as to why Billy does not perform Rock the Cradle of Love in concert, this was my second Idol concert with the obvious omission from the set list.

  • Billy Idol still rocks the house

    by Idollover100 on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Billy Idol always gives the crowd a great show, it was great when Slash came out and played with Stevie. One regret he didn't sing "Hot in the City", which is always a crowd fav. But Billy can still Rock n Roll with the best of them.

  • Billy Idol Rocked the Riviera!!!

    by Madkenley3 on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

It was one of the best rockin times I've had. Ive been to many concerts of the last 25years but had never seen Billy before.. I have told everyone how great it was and will see him again next time he is in Chicago!!!! He sounded great looked great and really just blew me away!!!

  • IDOL FOREVER

by dgidolfan on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Billy Idol always amazes. His songs are legendary and his reworking of them for a live audience makes a great show like his acoustic version of Sweet Sixteen. Steve Stephens is better now than I remember ever.

  • Billy Idol is a must see!!!

by Mandinkadell on 9/10/10Riviera Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Billy Idol at the Rivera Theater Sept. 8, 2010 and was blown away!!! I wasn't really sure what to expect given his past, but he was amazing!!! His voice sounds awesome and sounds exactly like it does on the radio, etc. He was in amazing shape and uber HOT!!! He was all over the stage like a kid. He even took the time to sign autographs while he was singing and perfoming. You can tell Billy Idol is a sincerly nice guy...it oozes from his pores. You can also tell that he is a big ham and still LOVES to perform and loves the attention. I have NEVER seen an artist in concert more than once, but I would definitely see Billy Idol again!!! Best couple of hours I have ever spent at a concert. The venue was not my favorite due to its age and lack of ventilation, but it was very small and intimate which only added to the great experience.
