About

BILLY CONNOLLY IN CONCERT:

Sideways-thinking and speed-chatting Scotsman Billy Connolly is a consummate improv performer and storyteller, regaling crowds with off-kilter folk songs and ridiculously circuitous stories for decades. Fans can always expect something weird, canny, and Scottish at his winking live shows as he works his way through new material and old standbys from his expansive discography. Having bounced back from prostate cancer in 2013, he remains an unstoppable force of funny on his 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Originally trained as a welder, Glaswegian comic Billy Connolly was inspired to a life of performing after one too many drinks at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Seeing the freaks and geeks he realized he could do the same, taking up banjo lessons and forming the comic-folk duo the Humblebums. His hilarious introductions before the band’s shows gained him recognition as a comic, and when the band split in the '70s, he took his act solo. Since then, he's gone on to achieve legendary status as a funnyman, writer, actor, and massive influence on subsequent generations of "tongues."

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"First time I have managed to see Billy live and he was amazing. We laughed from the minute he came on until he finished.”

"Billy Connolly is one of the best comedians! I've seen him perform in multiple countries now and have never been disappointed."

"Billy was the best comedy show I have ever seen. Laughed so hard I cried and my sides hurt.”

    Contrived and vulgar!

by Disgustedinwaterdown on 11/4/10Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

Billy Connolly needs to hang up his ridiculous striped pants and put away the platform shoes because he just isn't funny anymore. Used to love his act but now the natural scattered brilliance that used to be has been replaced with a contrived rehearsed insincere bunch of unfunny vulgar nonsense. I kept willing him to be funny but it just wasn't and I cringed at every use of the 'C' word. What a waste of money. I will not be paying to see him again. He should stick to acting.

Having seen Billy Connolly twice before at Hamilton Place, we knew what to expect from him. He delivered and it was better than the first time, or the second. You think you know what he is going to say but his ramblings are so intertwined it makes you think. What about his tattoo?

I am a great fan of his. Have some of his original records 20 plus years old. Always enjoyed his tour VHS tapes and his acting performances. However, I didn't think his show did him justice. I was somewhat disappointed though some of it was up to par. Reliance on bad language can be over done. Scotty

    Connolly Marathon

by NumButt on 10/16/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

There's nothing quite like watching a comic cram an hour and fifteen minutes of great material into a 2 1/2 hour show.

    Billy is simply amazing

by earthmuse on 10/12/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

I first saw Billy Connolly on HBO when Whoopi Goldberg "introduced" him to America. That was a LONG time ago. That he hasn't really done a lot of US tour dates since then is really a shame. I've probably watched clips of that show well over 200 times, and still to this day laugh so hard I get tears in my eyes. So this was a real treat for me, and to introduce him to others in our group the other night. He's simply amazing, a real one-of-a-kind comedian, and a real person. Over 2 hours just FLEW by, and once again . . . my stomach was cramping from laughing so much and so hard. If you are OK with real people, using real language, and laughing your ass off . . . don't miss this. It may never come again . . .

    King Billy

by Annunciata22 on 10/12/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

What a night! My ribs are STILL sore 3 days later from unabated laughter. Billy Connolly has lost nothing over the years - not even his memory, despite trying to convince us otherwise. He's a wonderful story-teller who paints a perfect picture with words around every, humourous anecdote. There's no mean-spiritedness here (unlike Ricky Gervais last week) despite the hilariously vicious verbal attacks on his poor, long-gone school-teacher as well as Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, just a wonderfully funny stream of consciousness which entertains no one more than its fiercely observant raconteur! The Royal George is THE PERFECT venue for such an intimate artist who obviously relishes close contact with his audience. He was on-stage for almost three hours without a break ( Messrs. Gervais and Ferguson take note) - not a moment lagged. Billy Connolly and Eddie Izzard are neck-and-neck the best Brtish comedians at work today - Craig and Ricky, you should try catching their shows sometime : you'd learn a thing or two! The Union of Welders' loss has thankfully been the Arts' gain and long may it continue. Chanson d'Amour will never sound the same again .......

Unbelievable show, 2.5 hours of the finest, scottish/life humor imagineable. Funny without jokes and an ability to relate to real world events and happenings and turn them into hysterics!

A MUST SEE - BILLY CONNOLLY

by ppppppppppppppppppppppppp on 10/11/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

do whatever it takes to see this show - the man is unique & supremely funny. He is on stage with no props for 2.5 hours just talking & letting the show go whichever way his mind takes it that night . We are going back next week because it will be a completely different show.

    Maestro Billy

by ChicagoBearCub on 10/11/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Billy Connolly is one of the truly great comedians. Most of his fellow comedians are happy to have a 15-30min routine but Billy kept the audience in stitches for almost 2.5hrs on Saturday night. I wondered whether the Americans in the audience would be able to fully understand the accent but the two local ladies beside me were reduced to tears for most of the evening. He confesses he doesn`t actually have an act but the incredible way he weaves and wanders between stories is the sign of a master at the top of his game.

    Billy was Billy!

by Dabney on 10/11/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

2 1/2 hours of stand up! Billy was is usual rambling self. Probably a little too long (tough enough to be funny for an hour!). He truly is a treasure and the Royal George is a great place to see him. I don't expect that he will be touring for much longer.

Expecting more that everyone could relate to

by OutWithoutKids99 on 10/11/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

I had only seen Billy's standup once on TV and remember the stories being those anyone could relate to. I also had seen him on TV and remember enjoying the show. However, it was clear my wife and I would have enjoyed this show more if we had visited Scotland or at least knew someone from Scotland. I do not recommend this show to a friend since I don't know anyone from that area. Fortunately, there were definitely some good laughs that anyone could relate to, but my wife and I were hoping for more....I regret not looking into Billy's typical standup's before purchasing the tickets.

The Big Yin Live at Last!

by lindyloo71 on 10/10/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Have listened to records in the 1970s my mum had all my life. Grew up in Billy's hometown of Glasgow. So know exactly what he is referring to when he talks about all the characters he has met in his life, especially in Scotland. Hilarious. Very funny. Brilliant front row seats. Laughed my arse off!
