BILLY CONNOLLY IN CONCERT:

Sideways-thinking and speed-chatting Scotsman Billy Connolly is a consummate improv performer and storyteller, regaling crowds with off-kilter folk songs and ridiculously circuitous stories for decades. Fans can always expect something weird, canny, and Scottish at his winking live shows as he works his way through new material and old standbys from his expansive discography. Having bounced back from prostate cancer in 2013, he remains an unstoppable force of funny on his 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Originally trained as a welder, Glaswegian comic Billy Connolly was inspired to a life of performing after one too many drinks at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Seeing the freaks and geeks he realized he could do the same, taking up banjo lessons and forming the comic-folk duo the Humblebums. His hilarious introductions before the band’s shows gained him recognition as a comic, and when the band split in the '70s, he took his act solo. Since then, he's gone on to achieve legendary status as a funnyman, writer, actor, and massive influence on subsequent generations of "tongues."

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"First time I have managed to see Billy live and he was amazing. We laughed from the minute he came on until he finished.”

"Billy Connolly is one of the best comedians! I've seen him perform in multiple countries now and have never been disappointed."

"Billy was the best comedy show I have ever seen. Laughed so hard I cried and my sides hurt.”

He was fantastic; I laughed until I cried. Saw Billy 11 years ago and he's still brillant.

    Great Glaswegian sh*t

by Pjbear101 on 10/9/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Phenominally observent, edgy as ever. Embarrasingly fell asleep with jet lag but not the old guys fault

Every piece of the "Laugh till I cried" experience i had hoped for, and the venue was fabulous. Reminded me of meeting him in a bar in Glasgow. Very intimate.

    Great Scot!

by baker221 on 10/8/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

I've enjoyed watching Billy Connolly for many years, both his comedy and in his film roles. Just like your favorite uncle, he is always welcome and you just want him to go on forever with whatever story, stories, or bits and pieces he happens to be talking about. I loved seeing him live, especially in such an intimate setting as the Royal George Theatre. I also loved the groups of British ex-pats in the audience. Brilliant!

    Serious disappointment

by BillPerry on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Billy Connolly looked like he had just rolled out of bed and was so disjointed during his story telling that you began to wonder if he was still drunk or high from the night before. There were a few laugh-your-***-off moments, but they were few and far between. I drove 4+ hours to see the show and was VERY excited about the front row tickets. Should have just skipped this show and gone out to a nice dinner with my wife and son instead.

Billy Connolly, one of the greatest story tellers!

by slim12 on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

He was right on telling stories that would have been boring with anyone else teling it but he made it and told it in a way that kept the audience laughing the entire time. Billy started down a path of a story but you could never tell when he was going to take an off ramp to tell you something he just thought of which wqas funny. He always made it back to his story and finished it but watching him onstage you could tell his mind was racing a mile a minute. All in all it was fantastic!!!

The Man, The Legend, The Pants

by LondoninChicago on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Billy Connelly is (present tense) a wonderful comedian. He remains the sprightly, charming, slightly mad storyteller we all know and love. His show did wax and wane after the first vibrant hour, but he kept pulling the crowd back on his side with his mischievous grin and flamboyant Scottish cursing. I did think he should have ended perhaps 15-20 minutes earlier (the show was over 2 hours long) and left the audience baying for more instead of hoping for a last big laugh from a tired Tuesday night crowd. That is my only criticism. I would recommend this stripy-panted yarnster to anyone.

    Billy Connolly is awesome!

by librarywizard on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Billy Connolly is absolutely wonderful. He is so funny! He reminds me a lot of my grandfather (although my grandfather came from Ireland, not Scotland). Billy tells stories, and then remembers something else, and my grandfather was just like that. I wanted a relaxing evening of fun, and that's what I got with Billy. I am a single parent of a special needs child, and my life is often stressful. Thank you Billy for giving me an enjoyable evening out with my friends. I laughed out loud a lot, and got an evening to be myself and not just my son's mother. I hope you are very successful this week and that the theater is packed every night.

    A smashing time

by szillmer on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

I've enjoyed Billy Connolly for almost 20 years, and this is the first live show I've seen. He's every bit the same live as he is on the tele. Eccentric, ludicrous, completely unorganized. You'll laugh until your face is sore.

    Connolly Living on the Edge

by CPD120 on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

The stories started out and didn't seem to have a finish, yet as the show went on it all came together, beginning, middle and end.

The Big Yin is back in town

by DennisD on 10/7/10Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Great to see the BIG YIN in Chicago again,I believe it must be 15 years since he was last here. I think he performed the exact same show as well! He is naturally funny, just opening his mouth makes me laugh, but I found the show to be too long a and his story's not as funny,he did no new stuff, everything has been done in the past. The story about his sister wasn't funny when he first did it! and it's less funny when you hear it again. My opinion is if you are going to tour and do old stuff, then do funny old stuff! Crucifixion anyone! At the same time I realize how hard it is to entertain people for over two hours, and he does make a great effort. My wife and daughter absolutely loved the show.
