About

Bill Maher on Tour

As fearless as any stand-up to take the stage, Bill Maher has never been shy about letting audiences know what he's thinking. With the razor-sharp wit he's brandished since his start in New York's comedy scene in the late ‘70s, Maher's candor has made him not just a comedy icon but one who's keenly attuned to the ever-changing worlds of politics and popular culture.

In his regular live appearances, Maher flaunts the same caustic but clear-eyed humor that's made HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher a television institution since 2003. Skewering idiocies, banalities and hypocrisies from across the political spectrum, Maher doesn't flinch from controversial topics of the day, and he finds laughs in subjects that other comedians don't dare to touch.

Bill Maher Background

No subject in politics or culture is safe from Bill Maher's reliably ruthless wit. Politically incorrect and proud of it, he is a comedian and commentator who plays by no one else's rules. This quality has made him a favorite of audiences and TV viewers for over four decades.

After cutting his teeth at his hometown's legendary comedy club Catch a Rising Star in the late ‘70s, the native New Yorker gained a wider profile through appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman. He got his chance to show off his own skills as a talk show host when Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher debuted on Comedy Central in 1993. The Emmy-winning late-night political show continued to garner laughs and controversy on ABC from 1997 to 2002.

Since 2003, Maher and his guests have enjoyed free rein on Real Time with Bill Maher, the fearless and freewheeling talk show that begins its 18th season on HBO in 2020. But as busy as he may be on his own show and as a guest commentator on CNN, MSNBC and elsewhere, Maher is always ready to demonstrate his enduring prowess as a live stand-up in venues throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Glad he gave us two hours of comdey

by RandyGautreaux on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

I just thought he would be as funny as on his TV show--- like in the last minutes when he does New Rules. I am not sure, but maybe he was a little nervous about the audience. While he was good, he wasn't as fabulous as some of his taped shows from his tours on HBO. The whole show was Republican bashing-- relentless, and non-stop. I am no fan of the Republicans, but still it was getting a little old. I would still recommend him as a comic, however. And I love his show on HBO and loved his movie, as well.

I was not fond of Bill's bashing of Michael Jackson. The man is dead, let him rest in peace. I DID love Bill's comments on the Repube party and Palin.......brilliant!

    Bill Maher was hilarious

by strawberry on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

This was our first time at this theater. It was beautiful. Apparently there was a problem with the sound in the back of the theater, but we had no problem hearing.

    Maestro Maher

by LouisianaPolitico on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

It is a rare treat for the Big Easy to have a comedian on the national stage select our town as a stop on their comedy tour. Kudos to Bill for not overlooking New Orleans now, or in the past with his zinging commentary on the non-comedic ineptitude of the Bushies post-Katrina. Maher's act is always topical, rib-hurting and side-splitting funny. It's a show in these depressed times worth every nickel!

Bil Maher was at his irreveratant best!!!

by MarignySandy on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

I have never laughed so hard for so long. There were so many "yes!" moments where he hit the nail on the head in a way only he can do.

Bill Maher was OUTSTANDING, as usual!!!

by Mainy on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Bill put on a great show for us here in New Orleans!!! He looked & sounded great!!! (Some people in the back & up in the balcony couldn't hear him that well, but that is something the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts needs to work on. They did get it fixed almost instantaneously, but they should keep that in mind for their next stand up comedy performance.) I have to say that the champagne was ice cold & delicious & his performance was so personable, it was like it was just you & him having your own private conversation. My only complaint is that it could have been longer... 2 hours of Bill just isn't enough for me, but then again, I am a die hard fan! I give this show 2 thumbs up & I'd give it more if I had more thumbs!!! :)

    Maher never disappoints

by Britwych on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Bill was highly entertaining and current as usual, and as always had his finger (or perhaps his razor tongue!) on the pulse of the nation. . He missed a 5 star rating for me because, being a regular Real Time viewer, I had heard some of the material before also because there were a couple of technical glitches with the sound system .

    Good times, Funny Guy!

by LARepublican on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

If you're a fan or realtime, any of Bill Maher's books, or his type of "intellectual" comedy as I call it - you'll enjoy the live performance. As my nickname indicates I'm a proud (not fanatical) republican - like any free thinking person there are some things I support, and some things I don't, but at the end of the day if you can't laugh at yourself your just to uptight! And Bill Maher WILL show you that his type of comedy will make you laugh at yourself - no matter your politics, religion, sex, or number of other interest - he takes a real world, relatively unbiased (except for his liberal views) approach to comedy. Overall the show is entertaining, engaging, and if nothing else thought provoking - if you like to be both comedically and intellectually stimulated you will enjoy Bill Maher.

    Awesome!!!

by galleryosborne on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Bill Maher is hilarious! We really enjoyed this show even more than the ATL show a couple years back. He really knows how to grab his audience with humor, common sense and serious talent. Will definitely see him the next time he's in NOLA.

    Maher is magnificent

by alfalfa on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

The show started out shaky because the sound system was not working properly. After a few minutes, the sound was improved but not much. Even sitting on the front row I missed some of what was said. I would suggest basic acoustic testing prior to the show to ensure that the sound is amplifying properly. That said, Maher is right on with his schtick. He is funny, witty, timely and smart. I would like to hear more about his views on religion, which presently is only about 10 - 20% of the show. Nevertheless, I recommend this act.

    bill maher was boring

by nolagal on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Get some new material buddy! Aside from the predictable comments about Micheal Jackson and a few barbs at Sarah Palin, I heard nothing I haven't heard before. Even the religious material was straight out of the movie. Boring, very, very boring. I found the way he kept reading his notes on the music stand very irritating. I didn't pay more than a hundred bucks to watch a "pro" fumble through his script. And hey, Bill, I know you're a busy guy but surely you have an assistant that could scribble a few "local" quips on an index card so you could pretend you knew what city you were in. It was painfully obvious you didn't know who David Vitter was after the audience shout-out.

Very funny show - great comic. However, the sound quality was terrible for the first 10-15 minutes. Didn't anyone do a sound test?!

the show its self was great. Bill is very good at what he makes fun of. The only thig about the show was the venue's sound was bad.

Bill Maher was great, but with audio problems

by NOLAmike on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

The show was very good, and much of the material was new to me. I'm glad we went. The theater had some audio problems, and where the audio did improve a few minutes into the show, I still often had trouble hearing Bill. And I was sitting in the front row against the stage.

    Bill Maher Makes Sense

by prettyprogressive on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

If you, like I, have seen just about everything Bill Maher has ever done, this show is not going to surprise you with any new insights. However, it is always validating to hear someone speak about the state of our nation in a practical, sensible way. The media-sanctioned climate of fear, the (mostly feigned) idolatry of children, the hypocrisy of politicians, are all covered, as expected. I thought the Muslim fashion show was a bit lame. I would've rather heard some "new rules", or Bill's take on something not typically in his realm of discourse. It was embarrassing for people to constantly yell at Maher about sound quality.

Bill is great- sound was not

by MeaganC on 7/10/09Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Bill was wonderful, funny, witty and a blast to watch!!! However, the sound in the theatre was not working properly. This took away from the overall experience. We had great seats - we felt bad for the people in the back or balconies.
