About

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

For over a decade he's performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras, and currently serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and is currently hosting a podcast series spinoff of his book entitled "Lightning Bugs: Conversations with Ben Folds." In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions, continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is working on two new albums.

An avid photographer, Folds is also a member of the prestigious Sony Artisans of Imagery, has worked as an assignment photo editor for National Geographic, and was featured in a mini-documentary by the Kennedy Center's Digital Project on his photographic work.

An outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, has served for over five years as an active member of the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA), and serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund. He also served as Chairman of the Arts Action Fund's ArtsVote2020 national initiative that encouraged voter engagement in the 2020 US elections, and continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education.

  • Ben and Kate were AMAZING!!!

    by hmk1208 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

The show was amazing. Ben is my absolute favorite artist. He included the audience and was of course astounding while playing the piano and singing. I was, however, disappointed that he did not play some of my favorite songs such as "The Luckiest," "Gracie," and "The B*tch Went Nuts." My friend and I also had some problems getting in because they changed their camera policy at the last minute, and this caused a lot of stress.

It was a great show i liked how it was just him and his piano. He did two great covers and a new song for the crowd . It was great!!

  • Great performance

    by asydlow81 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Folds delivered as usual. Solo show, just him and the piano. Played a lot of classics from BFF, as well as solo piano versions of newer songs including Way to Normal. This was my fourth time seeing Ben Folds, and by far the best.

This was my 44th Ben show and I need no reminder why I have seen him so many times. Each show is a unique experience. This show was outstanding.

  • ben folds knows how to put on a show

by graycie on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to several of ben Folds' concerts over the year, but none as amazing as this one. with just his own voice and piano skills to carry him through, he sounded th ebest i've ever heard him. not only that, but the crowd was amazing and he previewed several new songs!!!

  • Best Concert I've ever been too!

The show was unbelieveable. It made me a bigger fan than I already was. He is the man!!!

  • Ben Folds rocked the Pageant!

    by satellite468 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

He brought some great energy and kept it going the whole time with audience participation and impromptu songs about the Pageant's coat check and soft drink signs.

  • Ben Folds-1, Sound Guy-0

by FoldsFan on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Overall, this show was great. I loved seeing just Ben and the piano, even though he was pissed that he had to play a Yamaha. He played a lot of older stuff and the crowd responded well. Ben is great with making up songs on the fly, and last night was no different. He remembers playing the Pageant and seeing the Coat Check/Soft Drinks sign. Very funny! He started a cover of "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service but he forgot the words, so he pulled someone up from the crowd to sing it. That was great moment, too. There was great audience participation on three songs, and Ben complimented the crowd on being very musical. For the most part, Ben was on! The one thing that left me disappointed was the sound. I could hear the piano distorting (not in a good way) in the mid-range for the entire show. Since Ben was flying solo, I figured that it couldn't be that difficult to mix one vocal and one piano, but apparently something went wrong. To the average concert-goer, it may not have been too noticeable, but with us being the "musical" crowd that we were, I'm sure I was not the only one to hear this.

  • Ben Folds is awesome!

by skidaddle on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

It was just Ben Folds and the crowd. He was playing a bunch of every Ben Folds fan's favorites. The crowd was great, knowing all of the songs and singing along. The Pageant is small enough so that you feel really close and like you have a connection with the artist. Ben Folds did a great job playing with the crowd. He was going to play "Such Great Heights" but he forgot the words so he yelled out "Who knows this song?" and some guy raised his hand and Ben pulled him on stage and he sang the song on the stage while Ben backed him up and played the piano. It was fantastic. During the song "Not the Same" he orchestrated amazing crowd involvement that everyone joined in and thoroughly enjoyed. "Not the Same" ended his set and he thanked us for being a great crowd over and over. After he walked off the stage the crowd cheered really loud until he came back for his encore, where he played about three more songs and had fun with the crowd again.

  • Ben rocked the house!

by radiodude on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

An outstanding show. Ben played (solo) for two hours. Most old hits, which was fantastic. But he also "previewed" three songs from his new album, written by novelist Nick Hornby. Ben only played 2-3 songs from his most recent album "Way To Normal", which was the only disappointment.

  • Ben Folds Rocked The House

    by swimmer67 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds is a genius on piano. I have never seen anyone who had that much energy bang on the piano keys for 2 hours straight. The guy is unbelievable! To be able to get a sold out show of complete strangers to sing together in 4 part harmony is just an amazing feat. From the harmony to having an audience member come to the stage to sing a song with Ben singing backup, to having the warm up singer join him for a song, my cheeks hurt from smiling the entire night. Just simply amazing....

  • Great performance

    by Brian123 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

I was really amazed with the opening act. She had an interesting mix of acoustic folk mixed with opera. Ben's performance was top notch as well. The crowd was totally into the show and Ben interacted well with the fans. I was a little disappointed when I was listening to the CD of the opening band. Her CD was too pop and not enough acoustic which is what I thought I was getting. I was also hoping her facebook song was on the album.

  • Ben Folds can play!!!!

by Ghomedawg on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

I love to watch Ben Folds play the piano.. it makes me sit straight up in my chair and marvel. He has a great personality that comes out during his performances. He is high energy and has an amazing ability to play while standing up, stomping his feet, and just rocking with the crowd. He had a young guy come on stage and sing with him... what an awesome experience!

  • Best Ben show ever

    by Ballerina35 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Ben many times, and this was the best show I have ever seen. Just Ben and his piano and all of his best songs, I couldn't have asked for anything more. He even made up a song about a sign in the venue and allowed a member of the crowd to sing with him. Simply amazing!!!

  • Ben Folds Rocked the Pageant w/ just a grand piano

by OlderFart on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I was wondering how he was going to be Rocking the Suburbs w/ just a grand piano, but he did it easily. Good mixture, including some off-the-wall stuff [literally - he used the signs for Coat Check, Soft drinks, and the green Exit sign in one song], and he previewed 3 songs from the next album he is developing. The 2nd half featured crowd favorites [though didn't do a few I expected, such as Brick, & Fred Jones Pt.2]. Somehow got the crowd to do a couple 3-part backing harmonies where everyone chose what part they wanted. Lot of fun

  • Ben Folds was great in a solo setting

by Gisslergunner on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Fantastic show, Folds entertained with good music and good jokes.

  • Ben Fold's is Wonderful

by TomQ on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

What a talent, and fun stage presence! Absolutely amazing Piano Player. I was expecting the full band, and was initially disappointed, but after Ben started playing they weren't missed. The warm up, Katie Miller-???? was also incredible with a voice somewhere between Kate Bush and Lena Lovich. She was funny, and her backing guitarist was very talented as well. She would also belt out some Operetic vocals that were very impressive.

  • Ben Folds puts on and awesome show

    by student01 on 9/29/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show. He knows how to entertain. Involved the crowd a lot. It not like he was just out there to play music and get paid. It was like he was there for us. Will be seeing him again.

  • Ben Folds does it again!

by isubc on 9/28/09Indiana University Auditorium - BloomingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderful show! Kate Miller-Heidke opened for him and she was fantastic! It was the first time that I've ever seen the crowd give an opening act a standing ovation. Ben Folds was amazing as usual. He debuted 3 new songs which were amazing. The audience participation was fun and energetic.

  • BEN FOLDS, I LOVE YOU

by Emmalovesbenfolds on 9/28/09Indiana University Auditorium - BloomingtonRating: 5 out of 5

the concert was AMAZING! i've been a fan for a while, but i was still wondering how good one guy and a piano could really be?... the answer- unforgettable. The concert was one of the best i've ever been to. There was no doubt about it i will be itching to see him again if i ever get the chance.
