About

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

For over a decade he's performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras, and currently serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and is currently hosting a podcast series spinoff of his book entitled "Lightning Bugs: Conversations with Ben Folds." In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions, continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is working on two new albums.

An avid photographer, Folds is also a member of the prestigious Sony Artisans of Imagery, has worked as an assignment photo editor for National Geographic, and was featured in a mini-documentary by the Kennedy Center's Digital Project on his photographic work.

An outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, has served for over five years as an active member of the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA), and serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund. He also served as Chairman of the Arts Action Fund's ArtsVote2020 national initiative that encouraged voter engagement in the 2020 US elections, and continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education.

He is such an engaging performer. Everyone was so connected to the show most of the time. Plus, I didn't know he was such a good drummer!

  • BEN FOLDS IS ROCKIN' THE STAGE

by jochen on 4/21/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a Ben Folds fan for about six years and have been looking forward to seeing him live for about just as long. He was even better than I imagined; he sounds even better live with all his jamming piano improv. And his interaction with the audience was friendly, cool, and entertaining.

  • Ben Folds Amazing Piano Skills!

by Anonymous on 4/21/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Ben put on an amazing show and really knows how to get the crowd involved. He has amazing piano skills!!! And a good voice to go along with it! Loved it! Will definitely see him again when he comes through Chicago. He is entertaining and funny as well.

Amazing set list! RAW performance. AWESOME Drum Solo!

  • Ben Folds is freaking amazing!

    by thismomrocks1 on 4/21/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 17 year old son and 5 of his friends to this concert last night. What a show! More times than not, after seeing a performer live I walk away respecting their talents so much more and being an even bigger supporter. This is an understatement where Ben Folds is considered. His vocals and piano playing was phenomenal! For a nerdy looking guy who looks like he just rolled out of bed, his talent is astounding. We had a great time!!!

  • AMAZING!

by Anonymous on 4/21/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds was absolutely amazing. He tickled those ivories until the crowd was screaming for more. He's such a fantastic pianist and has impeccable stage presence. The Vic was the perfect place to see him; small, intimate, and the sound quality was great!

  • Ben Folds and a Piano

by Anonymous on 4/20/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

From an amazing opening act to the last song, Folds kept the audience entertained. With a few wild antics and surprises, he turned the average into the amazing. Truly an amazing night and highly recommended, Ben Folds and a Piano is the show to see!

  • A talented performer and a great show!

by pploeser on 4/20/10University of Dayton Arena - DaytonRating: 5 out of 5

A live performance is where Ben Folds' talents really shine. He really loves to interact with a crowd and builds the show around their participation. This was a very memorable show. If you like his music even a little bit, go see him live! It was my first time hearing the music of Kate Miller-Heidke, but I really did enjoyed her live performance.

Ben is so amazing in concert. I highly recommend anyone go see him. He complained about the piano being crappy but he still played the hell out of it. It didn't hurt my experience. Although I wish he had had a better one for his sake.

Ben with his supporting band makes for a great show but this ultra-personal gig with just him and a piano (plus an unexpected drum kit appearance) made for a truly memorable experience.

  • Intimate and rocking at the same time

by Anonymous on 4/20/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds and a Piano - my friend wondered what it would be like to have such a minimalist concert. To make it short, anything more would have just watered down his amazing concert. He told great stories and sang all his greatest hits. His fingers were bleeding partway through and he had bandages on hand which was awesome. A spectacular show!

Ben was excellent! The guy is very talented and has a great sense of humor.

  • Ben Folds and Kate Miller-Heidke

by DaniD08 on 4/20/10University of Dayton Arena - DaytonRating: 5 out of 5

So I had never heard of Kate Miller-Heidke before tonight and she did not disappoint. Her voice was phenomenal and her music was very different, which I loved. She was fantastic. It was then Ben Folds' turn. He played all of his hits and my favorite, "Bitches Ain't Shit". He let some random chick from the audience come up and help him with the song. Toward the end he had the girl clapping along with the audience and just walked off stage. It was hilarious! I loved toward the end when he got the entire place harmonizing with one another. It gave me chills.

  • Ben Folds is the man plain and simple!

    by Jbaby7 on 4/20/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The opening act really set the tone for the whole concert. Then when Ben got on stage everything went uphill from the there. Between his amazing songs he told jokes that added to the small venue atmosphere. Very simplistic with just him and a piano was my first thought but he really didn't need anything else to make a good show although his drum solo was very cool. This was my first time actually seeing Ben Folds I highly recommend seeing him live for any fan old or new.

Amazing show!! As always, Ben brings a ton of energy. :D

  • by MUGIRL on 4/20/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds is exceptional. I would recommend going to any and all of his shows. I felt bad that the piano was so awful, but he does a great job at making up for it. I can't wait until he comes back through Chicago and Milwaukee!!

  • Music at it's best!

by LindsJo on 4/20/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Ben Folds is insanely talented on so many musical levels. He also threw a bunch of humor into the show that kept it exciting in between numbers. The opening act was nothing short of mindblowing!

  • AWESOME!

by JHambone on 4/20/10House of Blues Cleveland - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time see Ben in concert, and I can't wait to see him again. The opening act, Matt Pond, was good, but didn't really project vocally so it was kind of hard to hear. Pond and his guitarist played about 6 songs and ended their set, and Ben took the stage about 8:30. From the opening momement to the final round of applause, Ben had the crowd in the palm of his hand.

  • Ben Folds is incredible!!

by GwensMa on 4/20/10Vic Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I was thrilled with the set list and the typical Ben Folds enthusiasm.

  • Ben Folds ROCKS!

Ben Fold's was AWESOME at the Vic!!! He claimed the piano was out of tune, but he played through and sounded great! Love how he chats with the crowd and makes up songs as he goes!
