BEIRUT IN CONCERT:

Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1986 and raised predominantly in neighboring Santa Fe. Though his experience in jazz band taught him how to play trumpet and helped him gain an appreciation for complex musical expression, Condon dropped out of high school at 17. The budding prodigy was exposed to the diverse musical traditions of Europe on a soul-searching trip abroad, and he immediately began incorporating a wide range of international styles into his home recordings. Adopting the moniker Beirut, he released a collection of demos as his first full-length album Gulag Orkestar in 2006. The record became a surprise hit following the viral success of the music video “Elephant Gun”, leading Condon to put together a live band for an impromptu tour. The lineup stuck, and the group’s 2011 album The Rip Tide converted an entirely new segment of fans when the single “East Harlem” was featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Tracks. After a period of intense personal issues, Condon thrilled fans in 2015 with the announcement of Beirut’s fifth album No No No. As they continue to tour the world, Beirut seems destined to absorb the musical influences of every place they visit, incorporating each new sound into their signature chamber pop masterpieces.

Lively show! Brass band and pumping accordion makes them sound like a French-Gypsy band.

Beirut did an amazing job. Defiantly one of the best concerts I have ever been too. Can't wait for them to come to Athens in December.

  • Phenomenal show all around

by wildcouches on 10/27/11The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Everything about this concert was fantastic. The musicians were on point, Zach Condon's voice was GORGEOUS, the lighting was beautiful. Their songs translate great live and they played a set with songs from every album. Condon was in a really good mood and was really nice the whole time, joking around and thanking the audience between every song, so unlike a lot of indie shows, the crowd was dancing around a bit and generally being really chill instead of just standing and staring. The venue was great--it was really easy to find a good place to stand without having to worry about pushing other people out of the way. I (and everyone I've talked to) feel like I got the experience of a lifetime.

zach condon is really talented and put on a fine show. his supporting musicians were tight and the sound was good. personally, i'd prefer seeing him at a smaller venue.

  • Beirut delivers and more

by itstartswithken on 10/16/11Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a lover of Zach Condon's music for some time now, and when I saw a FB ad about their concert at the Greek, I quickly jumped on it (that same hour). Boy was I happy I did that. He played all the classics as well as some unknown ones from his upcoming release album. He jovially plays with the crowd's banters in-between sets, while the backdrop of dimly lit daisy chained outdoor incandescent light bulbs gave a huge boost to the ambiance. It sure was cold, and thought it would rain, but even if it rained, I sure would have weathered it out just to listen and jive with their wonderful mixed instrumental melodies of horns, strings and his one-of-a-kind voice.

  • Best performance EVER

by Jolindacoolcat on 10/11/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Either if you know or do not know of Beirut. This band is completely worth every penny. The mix of different instruments made it a delight. Beirut is the most talented band I have ever seen perform live. The voice of Zach C. is to completely melt for. I would recommend this concert to my parents or have my friends come with me. It is all worth the while. By going to the show, I have gained so much more respect for Beirut and their passion for delivering a beautiful show. GO to the next Beirut show possible, there setlist was perfect. You will not be dissatisfied by any means.

  • Wonderful Beirut concert

by EAllen on 10/11/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The opening act was a little slow/out-there, but Beirut themselves sounded great. Tight percussion, new twists on old songs (often involving the addition of a tuba) and carnival-style lighting all contributed to an excellent concert experience. Zach Condon sounded great live, and the rest of the band exuded talent and musicality.

Awesome, awesome!!! Beirut was better than expected, and would go again!

  • Amazing live show

    by MusicFiend13 on 10/11/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

I had mild expectations for Beirut on a Sunday night- they were completely blown away three songs into the set! The energy- especially for such a low-key band- was palpable. They played a wide selection of songs from almost all their releases, including Realpeople Holland. There were even two new songs that they blasted out. Horns were blaring, the ukelele was strumming, and the accordian was according. . . Zach Condon made some good connections with the audience through his humility and mentioning half his family was from St. Louis. Although their set was only a little over an hour including two encores, the energy was amazing. I- like most the rest of the audience- didn't want the evening to end. GO SEE BEIRUT; YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!

  • Bittersweet Goodness?

by SKath on 10/11/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Definitely loved the band! But I knew what I was going to hear. The venue on the otherhand was not the best. I have been there numerous times, but never before has it been that packed. A bit ridiculous when you can't even see the band and you waited an hour in line beforehand. We had great seats, but they packed so many people in there that they started standing in front of us and blocking our view. I paid to see the band. I can hear them on my itunes anyday.

  • Top show by far

    by Ellie08 on 10/11/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Beirut was absolutely phenominal! They played numerous stellar songs from their older albums as well as the new one. They even decided to go for an obscure song requested by an audience member. Made my top 5 ultimate shows, possible top three, next to Radiohead's In Rainbows and Rage Against the Machine at the 2008 Lollapalooza.

  • Perfect

this show was better than I could have imagined. Despite the constant weed smell and over abundance of hipsters the night was beyond perfect. I loved every minute of it!
