About

BEIRUT IN CONCERT:

Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1986 and raised predominantly in neighboring Santa Fe. Though his experience in jazz band taught him how to play trumpet and helped him gain an appreciation for complex musical expression, Condon dropped out of high school at 17. The budding prodigy was exposed to the diverse musical traditions of Europe on a soul-searching trip abroad, and he immediately began incorporating a wide range of international styles into his home recordings. Adopting the moniker Beirut, he released a collection of demos as his first full-length album Gulag Orkestar in 2006. The record became a surprise hit following the viral success of the music video “Elephant Gun”, leading Condon to put together a live band for an impromptu tour. The lineup stuck, and the group’s 2011 album The Rip Tide converted an entirely new segment of fans when the single “East Harlem” was featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Tracks. After a period of intense personal issues, Condon thrilled fans in 2015 with the announcement of Beirut’s fifth album No No No. As they continue to tour the world, Beirut seems destined to absorb the musical influences of every place they visit, incorporating each new sound into their signature chamber pop masterpieces.

  • The genuine B's

by elizanose on 11/16/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

It was a celebratory performance, strung with bright lights and laughter that it took me away from the factory building in urban Philadelphia and into a foreign festival in the middle of green lands. Beirut and Basia Bulat were quite a genuine group of musicians dedicated to their music and the transcendence it brings. Previous shows at the Electric Factory have been "moshy" and "manic" and I once got a hole in my shoe from the aggressive fans. But not this show; you could dance joyously and with glee that brought the people together, the fans together. Even though the show was under three hours, it felt much longer than that do to the elated feelings and the energy felt in each song. I only wish it wasn't as expensive as it was to purchase a ticket for the time it was.

Great show but ended too short. Wish they played more songs and interacted more with the audience.

To listen to Beirut is such pure joy and the music Sunday night was nonstop. Each band member is such an asset to their unique sound. A true test of how enjoyable a concert was is when the music and the imagery still linger in your head days later which personally is the case with me. I love their energy and passion which stems from Zach Condon. Zach has such charisma and stage presence. The lighting added since last time they appeared truly adds a festival and street music atmosphere to the show. I wish they came to town more often.

  • AMAZING!

The light show was spectacular! Plus it wasn't too hot, and the people were friendly. I had such an amazing time, the acoustics were phenomenal and everything was a sweet perfection.

We were confused about when the doors opened. Showed up at 8:15, thinking the doors opened at 8, and we only saw 2 songs of the opening act. The place was packed and lively! Took a while to find standing room to settle in, but once we did it was amazing!

  • Just see them

by heynoella on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

It was gorgeous. Even non-fans will say wow. It was mellow enough to be a sit down, fancy shmancy, expensive liquor type show, but you also had moments where you wanted to dance. The Electric Factory was packed. I couldn't tell, since I was closer to the stage, but apparently people were standing by the doors even. I couldn't take my eyes off of them. A talented opener, and a mesmerizing main show. You will not want to take your eyes off of them. Spectacular.

  • Beirut at the electric factory!

by rrrrachel on 11/15/11Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Beirut was amazing! they were in sync and all the instrumentalists were equally good, they even improvised in some of the sings such as the trumpet riffs at the end of postcards from italy. I love the electric factory, love philly and atmosphere of the show, everyone seemed to be singing with them. After a very long encore cheer of "Beirut! Beirut!" they finally came back out and Zach played the penalty solo, which was amazing...they even brought out their little dog mishka. =) they ended the encore with an instrumental song that even had a solo from the tuba player. Basia Bulat was the opening band and she was great also! her auto harp skills are impressive but ooverall the show was great, I got a shirt and LP of the rip tide. then took the speedline to south jersey and drove back to baltimore with my friends, (got back at 3:30am) (it was worth it though).GREAT SHOW. It was sold out on a sunday night!

Excellent show - Beirut sounded amazing and they were timely performers (it's almost unheard of to wait less than an hour for a performer to come out on stage.)

Great show! They are extremely talented to be able to switch between so many instruments and still sing and sound wonderful! I would love to see them again, I just wish I could have heard even more!!!

What a beautiful Sunday night! Beirut was amazing. It's nice to see a band with REAL musicians.

  • Short and Sweet

by cgooseman on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Location was awesome. The lighting made it feel intimate. Beirut played and array of songs beautifully. Going from old stuff to the new cd. It meshed really well. The only thing that ticked me off was that I paid $40 for an hour concert. I was expcecting more play time but I guess the band wasn't feeing it.

  • Very forgettable

by Gondolier on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 1 out of 5

Beirut have been my favorite band for years so I was surprised to find myself leaving before the encore. Zach Condon announced that it was the last concert of the tour and it felt like it., there was no spark, no life just, well, boredom. As for the Electric Factory, it was packed and uncomfortable, the absurdity of being corralled into small cramped holding pens miles from the stage if you want to drink makes the whole experience grim. The less said about the stupidly expensive baseball game food and beer the better. Of the hundreds of bands I seen over the years, Beirut is the only one I have walked out on. In short Beirut, and The Electric Factory both sucked and I will not be going back to either.

Awesome concert! They play beautifully and it was a chill environment

  • Basia Bulut Amazing! Beirut not at their best.

by Anonymous on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I very much enjoyed the opening act, Basia Bulat, Sometime her voice would give me goosebumps. Then when Beirut came on the tone changed. Zach announced that it was the their last night on tour with a huff at the end implying they were totally exhausted. And you could tell they didn't seem as passionate as I have seen in the past. And I thinks its sad that the last 15 minutes (which was during the encore) was the best part of the concert.

  • Basia and Beirut: Amazing

by MiguelitoMonkey on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I had looked up music by Basia Bulat after finding out she was opening for Beirut and I was hooked instantly, but once I heard her singing live, I fell in love. She has the most addicting voice and it gave me chills on every song. Plus, she was adorable and was having so much fun up there. When Beirut came on to perform, they really put on a great show. They were all amazing and did such a great job. It was just mesmerizing to watch them and when they left the first time, it was obvious the audience needed more. The encore was the best part of the whole concert, boiling down to an amazing tuba solo. Great show!!

  • by Ekoch on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

I loved the setting. Basia and Beirut were both fantastic, but I just wasn't blown away. I guess I was looking for something with a bit more energy that's all.

  • Outstanding

  • Root for Beirut!

by libbybibby on 11/15/11The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I drove 4 hours to see Beirut at the Electric Factory. It was well worth it. Arriving 10 minutes before showtime, my friend and I secured a spot 10 feet from the stage. It was the best concert experience I have ever experienced. They sounded just like the recording, if not better. The set list was well varied and exceptional. I have all my Beirut music on replay...I just want to see them again and again.
