BECK IN CONCERT:
Alt-rock icon and master of reinvention Beck made a return to form of sorts in 2014 with Morning Phase, a companion album to 2002's beloved Sea Change. Eschewing the irony and sampling featured prominently in many of his other outings, Beck's latest is awash with earnest optimism and acoustic instrumentation — the result is a lush, organic, emotionally charged tour de force that comes across as beautifully in live concert as it does on record. Backed by a full band, Beck hits the road in 2014 for the Morning Phase tour, which includes a much-anticipated appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Beck moved to New York in 1989 and cut his teeth in the city's anti-folk scene before returning to Los Angeles in 1991. In 1993, his limited-release single "Loser" became a surprise college radio favorite, eventually growing into a mainstream Top 10 hit and garnering him a flood of label offers. Signing with Geffen Records, he released Mellow Gold in 1994, launching to both critical and commercial success virtually overnight. 1996 follow-up Odelay would prove even more successful, spawning three hit singles and taking home several Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album. In the ensuing years, Beck's creativity and fearless experimentation have made him one of pop music's most idiosyncratic talents — the acclaimed 2014 release of Morning Phase, his twelfth studio album, proved that he's just as vital today as he was 20 years ago.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Beck was ridiculously amazing. If you get a chance to catch him live, do it while you can. He is a true showman and should not be missed."
"As usual Beck put on an amazing performance. He played a few songs from each album (including the reader), and he played every last one spectacularly."
"He plays a mix of his old & new material, both acoustic & electric, he breaks out the harmonica, then plays a cover of Billie Jean. What!?! I only wish it could have gone on all night long."
Excellent Show!! Greatest I've been to in years, Beck sure does know how to make his fans feel welcome :)
Great show. It ended too early. Damn those hillside home-owners. If only we could've rocked longer. He had to jam many jams into the end. It was great.
This show was amazing. Luckily, I was in the very front row! After too many years, it is great to have my favorite musician on tour again. :) The whole show was being taped by large cameras and one camera man said it was for a documentary. Hopefully we will be able to see a DVD or online video of the show soon! Beck sounded amazing and played a lot of songs from Sea Change since he was on tour with the band from the album. He also played his biggest hits (like "Loser", "Where It's At") and some welcome surprises such as "Hotwax". This was my 4th time seeing Beck and he sounded better than ever at this show.
Seen Beck perform before several times but this show a real bummer...the show was being filmed and greatly took away from the performance...Helicopter hovering overhead for the first 15 minutes of the show muffling the sound, no less than six camera men on stage for the entire performance hovering around and frequently blocking the performers and distracting Beck from his performance and a camara boom hovering literally six inches over my head in general admission. Not to mention I found the set list not the best and Beck himself very lifeless part of which I attribute to not having any room on stage to move around due to the camara men. Love Beck but not sure I would go see him again...very disappointing that he would allow this to happen.
I love you Beck, but your prime is over my friend. You seemed uninspired and the whole filming felt so contrived and like such an over produced event. The best part was your son dancing by far. And Sea Change songs make me want to slit my wrists. Glad I got to see you in the 90's when you were way cooler and so, this will be the last time, but you will always have a special place in my heart. xoxox
Awesome show! one of the best shows I have ever seen at the SB bowl
it was great!!!! good energy and the beck was generous.
I love Beck, so he can almost do no wrong- but I wish he would have pulled out some of his dance moves!!! His son was adorable (dancing on a few numbers), but I still wish we would've seen more from Beck.
Beck is amazing. The show reminded me why I love his music, and how it is an integral part of my life.
the show was awesome, I love Beck! We had to make a decision whether to book the show since it was a week before my due date. I kept saying, the baby can come anytime after the Beck concert. Amazingly, labor started 2 hours after we got home! We gave baby middle name Beck!
Simply incredible, he's as good as he's always been.
it was not as exciting as i thought it would be. We had fun because we were with a group pf friends, but the performance was just OK.
Beck is truly One of the most talented musician's out there today. He is humble, and true to his root's! Awesome show, and the Santa Barbara outdoor stadium, was the best venue I have every attended! Beck, Rock On!
This was my first time to the Napa Uptown Theatre and it is now one of my favorite venues. Here's an insider tip: skip the bars at the entrance and head straight to the outside bar that is accessible through inside of the venue. The lines are short or non-existent. There is not a bad seat in the place either. We were in balcony seats, but had a great view. The sound was superb as well. Beck did a great job and played several of my favorites and even a couple crowd-pleasers. He played with the original band from the Sea Change album, which was a treat. This was one of my most memorable shows.
A great acoustic first set, heavy on the Sea Change material, closing with Jack Ass. Rockin' electric second set opening with Where It's At, getting the whole place on their collective feet to boogie the rest of the night away!
Jeff can do it all - and does in this tour. Any style of music from neo clasical to avant garde & of course Blues/Rock - NO ONE does it better. He brings a solid group the female bassist is particularly strong and at least in Pittsburgh a great young guitar player as a warm up act. If you didn't think this was at least 4*'s you probably don't really like this kind of music and certainly never played the guitar! He did a great Hendrix - probably a lot better than the couple of tribube bands touring last year (which I didn't see).
Good show, always entertaining.. I was way up in the back at United Place on the balcony, so definitely not the best seats in the house, but still sounded good. He always appears to be slightly uncomfortable on stage, but he doesn't disappoint and just keeps cranking good stuff.. Definitely a fairly mellow show, but great venue and a good time.. particularly after squeezing in a little Malecon across the street... Can't go wrong.
