BECK IN CONCERT:

Alt-rock icon and master of reinvention Beck made a return to form of sorts in 2014 with Morning Phase, a companion album to 2002's beloved Sea Change. Eschewing the irony and sampling featured prominently in many of his other outings, Beck's latest is awash with earnest optimism and acoustic instrumentation — the result is a lush, organic, emotionally charged tour de force that comes across as beautifully in live concert as it does on record. Backed by a full band, Beck hits the road in 2014 for the Morning Phase tour, which includes a much-anticipated appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Beck moved to New York in 1989 and cut his teeth in the city's anti-folk scene before returning to Los Angeles in 1991. In 1993, his limited-release single "Loser" became a surprise college radio favorite, eventually growing into a mainstream Top 10 hit and garnering him a flood of label offers. Signing with Geffen Records, he released Mellow Gold in 1994, launching to both critical and commercial success virtually overnight. 1996 follow-up Odelay would prove even more successful, spawning three hit singles and taking home several Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album. In the ensuing years, Beck's creativity and fearless experimentation have made him one of pop music's most idiosyncratic talents — the acclaimed 2014 release of Morning Phase, his twelfth studio album, proved that he's just as vital today as he was 20 years ago.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Beck was ridiculously amazing. If you get a chance to catch him live, do it while you can. He is a true showman and should not be missed."

"As usual Beck put on an amazing performance. He played a few songs from each album (including the reader), and he played every last one spectacularly."

"He plays a mix of his old & new material, both acoustic & electric, he breaks out the harmonica, then plays a cover of Billie Jean. What!?! I only wish it could have gone on all night long."

Beck concert at State Theater in Portland ME

by Hippygranola on 8/4/13State Theatre - Portland

Beck was awesome as was his back up. The only problem I had was hearing beck at times either his sound was not right or he did not sing into the mic. Other than that, it was a good show. Glad I went. State theater was hit like a sauna but it was worth it!

I've seen great shows at the State, and then I've not so great shows. It seems that when an act that has low to hi volume fluctuation the acoustics in the State are a disaster (recently Beck and Fiona Apple). Beck brought his Sea Change band and played a drippy labored first set, and while all the songs sounded good enough, it wasnt what the crowd came for. Then he played a more expected 2nd set, but his band was just not capable of playing elements from his more electronic sounding works from Odelay, Midnight Vultures, etc.

    A unique Beck experience

by htree on 5/21/13Rio Theatre - Santa Cruz

This is the smallest venue I've ever seen Beck in (900 seat theater) and the most crowd interaction I've experienced. Him, bass, keys and drum machine standing in for his drummer (currently on tour with Thom Yorke...ahhh, indie-rock problems.) He played some of his new songs, which he said he hadn't played before. Also great versions of favorite classics - Debra and Sun Eyed Girl are some of my favs. And he took crowd requests, which was super cool. And we had some moments playing with the drum machine. It was awesomely loose, which I hadn't expected. All in all a very intimate show, which was so cool after only seeing him in big venues, being all Beckish, far away on-stage. No stunts, just Beck singing his fantastic songs with a great backing band.

    beck acoustic

by gmoo on 5/21/13Rio Theatre - Santa Cruz

What a unique event. A world tour of one city. It was like seeing Beck play in your living room. Totally casual. He took requests. He played songs I thought I'd never hear. Songs from Song Reader. MTV Makes me Want to Smoke Crack. Nightmare Hippy Chick. Great show.

    Acoustic? Maybe not.

by tardonfeathered on 5/21/13Rio Theatre - Santa Cruz

Yes, I was there... at least initially. I should preface it by sharing that I'm not a huge Beck fan but like his music and have for many years. I saw him a few years ago at the SC Civic and was very impressed. Very creative and artistic show. My wife and I left this one after six, maybe seven songs. He didn't do anything wrong and he didn't sound bad, we were just bored. I'm sure it got much better and more interesting but we were unimpressed and only wondered, "How much better?" It was my birthday so we opted for Chinese foot massage instead. My cursory opinion was that he clearly thought that his music could withstand the rigors of an acoustic, stripped down platform, and for me, it didn't. He is so brilliant rhythmically (especially for a white guy from LA), and the absence of a live drummer and general effects were sorely missed from my POV. He did augment things with a drum machine but the kick drum sounded very muddy which unfortunately captured my attention. They likely corrected that eventually. There was so much energy permeating the room 30 mins before scheduled showtime (8:00) which crested around 8:20 and trailed off by the time he actually hit the stage at 8:40. First few songs were uninspiring and flat which I thought surprised the audience, many of whom acquired tickets at a premium. Around song 4 or 5 he shared that he was going to do a couple of new songs. After the first one he said, "That was the first time I've ever played that song live," as I turned to my wife and smirked, "and hopefully the last." I understand that my credibility is compromised because I left after 35 minutes but these were my general, honest thoughts. I'm definitely not a pessimistic artist basher, quite the contrary actually. I'm a live music junkie and have been for 30 years.

    One of a kind artist!

by Anonymous on 8/16/12Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

Amazing set! The band sounded so good. Missed Brian's dancing, but Justin more than made up for it with his bass and his fancy foot-work. The crowd had more than a few too many drinks, but that's the way it goes. Why some people choose to pay for tickets, then get so drunk they can't see is beyond me. Beck is absolutely amazing and deserves to have a crowd that appreciates his significant talents. Will see him every chance I get!

    Stealth Beck gig at Bimbos!

by txbtxb on 8/13/12Bimbo's 365 Club - San Francisco

Word was out on twitter at 10:15 on a Weds. morning that something big was coming down the pike before the Outside Lands weekend. Sure enough, soon we learned that tickets to Beck at Bimbo's would go on sale at noon. Tickets were $42 and gone the second they were offered. Myself and a few hundred of my closest friends were lucky enough to get tickets in to our Ticketmaster shopping carts and were rewarded by a memorable show the very next night. This was my first time seeing Beck at a non-festival gig, and he is a wonderful headliner. The crowd was enthusiastic without being rambunctious, and the venue staff did a wonderful job from handling the all will call tickets to helping us find drinks, restrooms, and a place to check our bags. An amazing night in San Francisco!

A bit more mellow but sill awesome as ever!

by Allygator on 8/12/12Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

It's been 10 years since i last saw Beck (Beck/Flaming Lips 02' tour) and i was stoked to see him perform again. I flew to Vegas from San Diego because that's how excited i was! Beck didn't disappoint. He played all of the classics, a lot of Sea Change, a lot of Dylan-esque stuff, and some new songs. His bassist was probably the star of the show, though, with all of his crazy energy. I was hoping for some of Beck's famous dancing moves and only got about a step or two to see at the end. I think there are two types of Beck fans - those that come to hear "Loser" live and those who appreciate his awesome creativity as an artist. The crowd demographic varied but was heavy in the 30-40 range. A LOT of drama with young folks who were attending the show because it was in Vegas and they couldn't control their liquor. I think that was the only disappointing factor. I paid for a $70 seat only to have 4 drunk chicks spill beer all over me, the seats, and harass everyone around them. Another drunk chick across the way was getting M&Ms tossed at her for her to stop being ridiculous. Security was pretty docile and unwilling to help control the excessive people, which sucked. Besides that i'm glad i got to go. Beck is timeless in rock and if you're lucky to ever see him perform you'll enjoy every minute of it.

Beck did exactly what we thought he would.

by ToriToriTori on 8/11/12Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

This was a good show. The Pearl supplied their ample JbL rig that was barely breathing for most of the first half. This was a decidedly calm show. The demogaphic was white 30-50 and mostly couples with a few hipsters and lone wolves. Lets just say that most people in the room were Star Wars fans.. Even the stage crashers were allowed to linger for up to a minute before the stage manager posing as security wandered out to offer a hand in helping the lost souls find their way off stage.. There was no opening act and that was Ok, although starting 50 minutes late was not. 49$ per ticket was right on track with the level of staging and production, 23$ for two drinks was not.

Beck and band clearly needed this show to prepare for their slot at Outside Lands, but despite some mistakes and missed lines, they were loose and engaged, Beck was in a joking mood, and they played a tremendous set. At Bimbo's!

    Beck is awesome!!

by ScottyLV on 8/10/12Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

Excellent show!! Beck hasn't had many live dates as of late, so I jumped at the chance to check it out. it was really great. Rolling through some of the 'radio hits' along with some B-sides, that only true fans would know. He's band is made up of mostly session players, Justin Meldal-Johnsen’s bass playing and crazy fro was great. Smokey Hormel on guitars, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. on the keyboards & Joey Waronker on drums. They play tight as pros but keeps it cool like a garage band. Beck's guitar playing reminds me a little of Jack White's, but without all the hostility. Just easy going and simple. Over all great show! Security was pretty weak since 3 fans decided to run on stage and pretend to be part of the show.

No opening acts, Beck started right off with a good show from begining to end. The only thing that sucked was the event did not allow pictures and/or videos to be taken. I was right by the stage and would have great pics if not for that.
