About

BECK IN CONCERT:

Alt-rock icon and master of reinvention Beck made a return to form of sorts in 2014 with Morning Phase, a companion album to 2002's beloved Sea Change. Eschewing the irony and sampling featured prominently in many of his other outings, Beck's latest is awash with earnest optimism and acoustic instrumentation — the result is a lush, organic, emotionally charged tour de force that comes across as beautifully in live concert as it does on record. Backed by a full band, Beck hits the road in 2014 for the Morning Phase tour, which includes a much-anticipated appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Beck moved to New York in 1989 and cut his teeth in the city's anti-folk scene before returning to Los Angeles in 1991. In 1993, his limited-release single "Loser" became a surprise college radio favorite, eventually growing into a mainstream Top 10 hit and garnering him a flood of label offers. Signing with Geffen Records, he released Mellow Gold in 1994, launching to both critical and commercial success virtually overnight. 1996 follow-up Odelay would prove even more successful, spawning three hit singles and taking home several Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album. In the ensuing years, Beck's creativity and fearless experimentation have made him one of pop music's most idiosyncratic talents — the acclaimed 2014 release of Morning Phase, his twelfth studio album, proved that he's just as vital today as he was 20 years ago.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Beck was ridiculously amazing. If you get a chance to catch him live, do it while you can. He is a true showman and should not be missed."

"As usual Beck put on an amazing performance. He played a few songs from each album (including the reader), and he played every last one spectacularly."

"He plays a mix of his old & new material, both acoustic & electric, he breaks out the harmonica, then plays a cover of Billie Jean. What!?! I only wish it could have gone on all night long."

    WOW!

    by Nic on 8/25/23

It is hotter than hell in Texas, but Beck (and Phoenix) absolutely burned the place down. What a fantastic show! Tons of energy, great engagement with the crowd, fantastic set lists, and amazing lights. Amazing!

    Not bad

    by April on 8/25/23

Summer odyssey tour was great! Came out specifically to see Phoenix but Beck was pretty dope. The crowd was cool but the venue was horrible only because of the heat. Otherwise the concert was worth the price of admission.

    Amazing show

    by akparkyn on 8/24/23

There were four bands so had nearly 5 hrs of music for one ticket price. Pheonix were fantastic and put on a great show. Beck was amazing and really showed his breadth of talent by playing many of his classic hits covering a variety of genres. The colab at the end was great as well. Pity it was as hot as hell in Texas but really the acts all did an incredible job in uncomfortable conditions.

Entertaining and Personal but Too Loud

    by hi on 8/24/23

Hello, I really enjoyed the Beck concert, despite the heat 100+ in Dallas. I took my son as his first concert experience and we have been looking forward to it since Christmas. We did not arrive until after sundown so Phoenix was just coming on. Though I would have liked to see the other 2 openers, I think this decision made the temps bearable and the evening a positive for him. Beck himself was great! I loved that he spoke to the audience, I liked the nice mix of good hard rock and slow contemplative songs. I was less familiar with his more recent stuff so would have liked less blasting volume to be able to at least hear the lyrics. To me, lyrics are a lot of what makes a song speak to you, and there was too much volume to discern them. The backdrops were fun, his band is incredible. I would suggest letting the camera focus in on the other musicians more often, and stay with them on solos. Phoenix was fine. Also unfamiliar to me so a lot of the songs sounded the same, but I LoVed that he walked through the audience, greeted the people, hung out for a while. It made it real and I wanted to know his band better. People around us seemed to be having fun and enjoying the show, dancing and clapping. I felt bad for the band that the sing-alongs were not as loud as expected, but hey, like 1/3 of the seats weren't full, probably from the heat warning. For the venue, it was kind of hard to find the designated driver token for the free soda, but kudos to the guest services staff member that went out of his way to find and bring me one so my kid could get a soda. All in all, positive experience and I would do it all over again any weekend.

Incredible show! Like a mini festival.

    by DallasFan on 8/24/23

Beck brought his Summer Odyssey tour to Dallas last Monday, August 21, which also included Sir Chloe, Weyes Blood, and Phoenix. I have seen Beck before, and he's always great, but I also wanted to see the other three bands. It was very hot (107° at showtime)--and I'm always reluctant to see concerts at Dos Equis Pavilion in the summer for that reason. But the show was definitely worth it. Sir Chloe absolutely rocked. Weyes Blood was euphoric--Natalie is very elegant and has a beautiful voice. Phoenix is among the tightest bands I have ever seen--wow. And Beck (with producer extraordinaire Justin Meldal Johnson on bass) put on the best show I have ever seen from him. One hit after another. ("Dreams"was a highlight for me.) And both Beck & Phoenix employed an immersive LED screen backdrop that featured amazing visuals; and the two bands joined forces onstage at the end for a song they had written together. Best 20-dollar concert ticket I have ever purchased! I'll definitely see Beck again. The sound of his band is incredible. Highly recommended!

    by Thew on 8/24/23

I was like warm going to this show. I knew Beck songs, but was going for the friends I went with. Phoenix and Beck crushed it. Played all the hits, genuinely impressed me with new music I’d never heard. It was stellar.

Beck: full of energy & sounding great!

    by KatieAD on 8/24/23

This concert was incredible!! First of all, great line up of songs (I only wished they played 'Hell Yes' lol) and the awesome 3D picture frame concept backdrop of the stage was really fun to watch. And the colors and patterns on it were wonderful to look at. Beck's energy level was way up and so was the audiences'. It was over 100 degrees but SOOOOOOO worth facing the heat to see such a great show. Beck never stopped entertaining and he sounded fantastic! He appreciated the fans that came see him on a Monday night in 105 degree heat. He is just one of the best artists of all time, a musical genius if you ask me.... it's that simple. Thanks, Beck!! Can't wait til next time!!!

    Hot but fun

    by Gonzo on 8/23/23

I have to remember that outdoor concerts in the summer in Texas can be pretty miserable thanks to triple digit temperatures. Besides that Beck was amazing and played almost every song I wanted to hear. The ones he didn’t play were pretty deep cuts, so I’m good. I even enjoyed Phoenix, a band who’s albums have never really grabbed me, but they were mesmerizing and over the top on stage. Great show all around.

Beck is the best, prefessional and outstanding!

    by Yvonne590 on 8/23/23

Beck's crew arrived with impeccable punctuality, not a single minute behind schedule! The complete performance was nothing short of awe-inspiring. I'm an ardent admirer of Beck's talent. Moreover, his humility shone as he graciously invited the previous bands to join him on stage for a collaborative performance. Beck is undeniably a superstar!

    Pavilion heat

    by Mohawkboy on 8/23/23

Beck is a top-10 musician for me and I was really excited to see him but unfortunately missed 3/4 of his show because I got heat exhaustion and had to be rushed to the Pavilion emergency! His show looked and sounded amazing but the 95 degree temp at showtime was just too overwhelming. I love the Pavilion and have seen hundreds of shows there, but as summers get hotter it will be more difficult to attend any of the June-Sept concerts, which is the bulk of their season.

    miserably hot

by Bill of Texas on 8/23/23

Should have known better that to buy tickets for a outside August show. It was miserably hot. Venue will no longer take cash for anything. Really don't like to use credit card to buy a coke. Bands were okay.

    Hotter than sin

    by lillamb on 8/23/23

This is my 4th Beck concert. He’s cute. It was hard to enjoy because it’s so hot here but he brought his A game and nobody died. Phoenix was good too. I didn’t see the other 2 bands. I’d rave more if it wasn’t such a sweat bath, it was as good as it could be.

Pretty good, but pretty much same old set

    by hypnopanda on 8/22/23

Beck put on a pretty good, yet very predictable show. A little more than half of his set were songs that I mostly like. However, it seems like he's been playing a very similar set for 12 to 15 years, minus songs from the Morning Phase album, which I didn't like anyway. Beck has such a huge catalog of so many awesome songs that he never plays anymore, and many for that matter has never even played live. It's very frustrating as a fan. He has so many cool songs that he's written and performed in the past that he has almost completely ignored for over 20 years. I really wish he would at least eliminate songs like Lost Cause, Where it's At, and Loser from his set, which I'm somewhat sick of. i've even gotten a little tired of hearing the New Pollution, Nicotine and Gravy, and Mixed Business, even though I kind of like those songs. He just plays them too often. It feels like laziness. I really wish he would write some new, decent material as well, since I don't like anything he's done since Modern Guilt in 2008. Most of his newer material since then seems very sad, cliched and lackluster. I understand that he's gone through some tough times, a divorce, and just started playing with some of his older musicians again. However, I don't know if I'll try to see him again, unless he either puts out new material that I like, or starts playing old material that I like. I've seen him close to 20 times. he's gotten a lot of my money from tickets I've bought. He was so damn good and full of great energy when I saw him in 1999 and 2000. They were some of the very best rock music performances I have ever seen! His performances now seem somewhat lackluster compared to that. I don't know what happened. I understand he has aged. But I have seen other Rockstars that have aged much better, if that's the case. All that being said, I still love to listen to the music of his that I love. It has been a big part of the soundtrack of my life. I really think he needs to rehash his live show, stop playing what he thinks are his hits that he's been playing at nearly every show for 20 years, or at least do them in a different way that is fresh, and not the same old way he's been doing the songs for 20 years. He's still one of my favorite, songwriters and musicians, and the memories of his performances from 23 years ago will always be with me. I hope he gets over whatever's bugging him, and becomes more enthusiastic about what he's doing. I did enjoy a recent, pop-up acoustic show that I saw of his. But most of his performances over the past 12 years generally feel like he's not trying very hard.

    Wowza!

    by Evikeek on 8/21/23

What an awesome show! I only saw Phoenix and Beck. I had never heard of Phoenix and was blown away by everything about them, especially the auric energy of the singer. And Beck?! I stood and danced through the whole show. I have been listening to Beck since his first album, way back when. His artistry is second to none. Really had a fantastic time! Would spend money to see Beck anytime!
