  • Beauty and the Beast was excellent

by shyanne333 on 5/23/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

An excellent production, although I didn't think it quite rivaled the production we saw a few years ago as far as the special effects and costumes were concerned. None the less it was very entertaining for young and old alike.

Our whole family really enjoyed it. The kids talked about the show the next day, and listened to the musical on CD for the car ride home. It was the first time for them to see a live musical.

  • Mostly good...few exceptions

by Bdawg141414 on 5/23/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed this musical. Both Gaston and the Beast were amazing. Both got into their characters and had really good voices. However the few issues I have are with Mrs. Potts and the lighting. Mrs. Potts had an amazing voice but when she was delivering her spoken words has a weird accent....it reminded me of Eliza Doolittle...it wasn't good. The lighting was annoying because when the spot light was on it wasn't always centered on the actor and sometimes it was wobbly. Overall it was good and I would recommend it.

  • Outstanding voices!

Beauty and the Beast while not amazing, was still a very pleasant treat. it will be a night to remember for our granddaughter.

  • sparkling fairytale

by Heb11 on 5/23/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

It was bright, colorful, fanciful and engaging. Wonderful voices, great props and scene changes and special effects made Beauty and the Beast exciting to watch. Though the Hall was filled with children they were quietly enthralled. The experience was happy and just plain fun.

Great show. Terrific special effects. Might be too long for little kids.

  • Spectacular Performance!!!

by Nichivo on 5/23/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

Highly entertaining! Fun and colorful! Great singing, dancing and acting. Gaston and Babette especially stood out. Story flowed beautifully, and there were even a some emotional moments, like when Belle was reading King Arthur to the Beast. Microphones on the foreheads were a little distracting, but I'm sure most people didn't see them (we were in the 3rd row).

  • Great musical, ok performence.

Many of the transitions were a bit rough going from one scene to another. I have seen this performance before and this was much weaker. There were come lighting issues and things that distracted from the play.

  • Beauty and the Bust?

by LanceLovesTheater on 5/23/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 2 out of 5

My wife and I love the theater, we try to see them all. She had never experienced the story of Beauty and the Beast before and she really liked the show. Unfortunately for me, I watched the Disney version and I found the theatrical version to be extremely weak in comparison. I know you shouldn't compare the two. However, I was left thinking this looks like a high school play. I was very happy to hear that my wife enjoyed it. Belle: was great very close to the Disney version in voice. She did a wonderful job and was the one truly bright spot in the show. Beast: was weak. Nice voice but overall left you wanting more. Gaston: was unconvincing. Once in a while he went for the character and you felt like he was Gaston. But most of the time he only went halfway there and then bailed. Lumiere: Had the worst French accent I ever heard. Very poor. Cogsworth: forgettable. Mrs. Potts: Was sweet and had a a great voice. She did a wonderful job. Chip: was great he did a good job as well. Lefou: In the Disney movie was wonderful, but in the play was as weak as Gaston. Those two are a big part of the movie and if they are off individually and especially as a tandem, you can just forget it.

  • Beautiful, funny show!

by spartapatty on 5/23/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

The cast and orchestra did a beautiful job! We enjoyed every bit of the show. Lumiere, Lefou, and Gaston were especially great. But what would the show be without the fantastic music! The orchestra was awesome! Dress for a rather warm performance hall. At times, it got uncomfortably warm near the front rows.

Took my wife to see this production 8 years ago on the night I proposed to her. Loved it then. My daughter turned 4 a few weeks ago and my wife and I decided to take her for her birthday. She had a blast and we had a lot of fun too. Awesome show! If you like the movie you will love the show.

This show was great! I'd memorized the soundtrack, but this was the first time I've actually seen the musical, and I loved it. The costumes and staging were particularly awesome.

  • Not what was expected....

by larsfensington on 5/22/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 3 out of 5

I have seen the traveling broadway show and this was not it. It was good but not to the caliber of the show I have seen in the past. I kinda felt like I was fooled into thinking this would be the same show that has come through in the past. Based on the ticket prices, I thought it was. Special effects were not as good as I have seen in the past shows and the beast was less than a prince when the end came. Overall a good show but if you are expecting the traveling broadway show, this is not it.
