BATTLES IN CONCERT:

Battles’ stunningly complex and undeniably fun experimental rock is just as cerebral as it is cathartic for audiences. Each member adds a necessary component to their joyfully adventurous sound in concert, starting with the chopped samples and grooving basslines of Dave Konopka. Ian Williams pulls double duty, tapping lightning fast licks on his guitar with one hand while hammering out insane synth runs with the other. While these two blast off into outer space, drummer Jon Stanier pounds out driving drum rhythms that are sure to get ticket buyers bouncing to the beat. As the band plows through mind-blowing favorites like “Ice Cream”, “Atlas”, and “The Yabba”, audience members won’t be able to resist Battles’ swirling sonic textures, hard-hitting rhythms, and mind-blowing instrumental prowess.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Featuring a veritable who’s-who of underground virtuosos, Battles has carved out a unique and adventurous space in the experimental rock scene. Drummer John Stanier (Helmet), guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams (Don Caballero), guitarist/bassist David Konopka (Lynx), and guitarist/composer Tyondai Braxton got together in 2002 to start Battles. After a couple of EPs, the quartet released their full-length debut Mirrored in 2007 to widespread acclaim thanks to their use of cutting-edge looping technology in a rock context. Just as the group was making a name for themselves, though, Braxton decided to split with the band in 2010 to focus on his goals as an avant-garde composer. The remaining three members soldiered on with the celebrated 2011 album Gloss Drop, focusing on instrumental rock while featuring guest vocalists like Gary Numan, Matias Aguayo, and Kazu Makino. The trio continues to thrill audiences at their amazingly energetic live shows and explore new sonic frontiers with their stellar recorded material, including 2015’s La Di Da Di.

Battles 2.0 is the key to a great live show

by questionblockx on 5/1/11Brighton Music Hall - Cambridge

The show was definitely worth going to. I've seen Battles twice before, when Tyondai was still in the band, and I think this was one of the tightest performances that a live band has ever delivered. I saw these people dancing crazily, then I was dancing crazily. It was an infectious sequence of moments. I gotta see these guys anytime they're around.

    Battles are a must-see

by Anonymous on 5/1/11Brighton Music Hall - Boston

When I went to see Battles, I was expecting a lot out of them. Not only did they meet expectations, but they surpassed them by a long shot. Highly recommend anybody who can see these guys should.

Eclectic review of a great label

by guttertwin on 9/7/09Terminal 5 - New York

Pivot seemed pretty unremarkable, but the rest of the show was uniformly excellent. A Flying Lotus set is always fresh with unrecorded material, and even the familiar elements are recontextualized with other samples and beats. !!! played mostly new material, which on the whole, sounded more restrained and subdued but as tight and groove-focused as ever. Battles also previewed some new material. Only downside was their set was cut short for some reason (as thought Terminal 5 had to close up at midnight), and it appeared that they skipped over some other songs they planned to play to get to "Atlas" to close the show out.

    BATTLES WERE AMAZING!

by gallopingghandi on 9/5/09Terminal 5 - New York

Great crowd last night at Terminal 5 - a favorite venue of ours! Love the 3 level option inside the Terminal because it gives you a chance to spread out and diversify. Flying Lotus and Pivot were fairly interesting but we were there for BATTLES. Although it was a while before BATTLES went on it was well worth the wait! BATTLES GAVE AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!!! GREAT RESPONSE FROM THE CROWD. WE LOVED THEM! And just a little news flash:::: David Byrne was there. He arrived while BATTLES were performing their set. Now, that says something to me! We can't wait until BATTLES come back to NYC! Thanks for a great concert guys!

    Flying Lotus and Battles

    by Kristen88 on 9/5/09Terminal 5 - New York

Flying Lotus and Battles definitely rocked this event. However, it was a bad lineup. !!! should have come before Flying Lotus because after his amazing performance we were lolled to sleep and boredom by the weird, generic, uninspiring performance of !!!. This made it take a while to get into the Battles performance. But, Overall it was amazing.

4 stars for Battles n Flying Lotus. 0 for T5.

by Zisonthedancefloor on 9/5/09Terminal 5 - New York

Battles was a-uh-mazing. Full on!!!!! Flying Lotus was amazing. I want to more!!! !!! was uneven & inconsistent. & the singer spends waaaaay too much time dancing in the mirror at home. Missed Pivot. Terminal 5 is my least favorite venue. Terrible sitelines, weird acoustics, staff is surly. But easy to get around & the roof is good if you want to miss an act & hang out with yr friends.
