MELT-BANANA IN CONCERT:
Japanese noise punk duo Melt-Banana brings an infectious energy to every stage they invade, treating fans to a live show that looks and sounds like a transmission from an alien planet. Vocalist Yasuko Onuki sings and raps high-pitched and fast-paced lyrics over guitarist Ichirou Agata’s insane arrangements, which are just as much about sonic texture as they are about melody. With a wide range of effects at his disposal, Agata manipulates his guitar’s sound in wild and unexpected ways, mimicking a chorus of angels one moment and a nuclear explosion the next. The band rips through their songs at a breakneck pace, leaving audiences floored every time they go on tour. For ticket buyers prepared for the mayhem, Melt-Banana’s extreme sound and high-energy performances promise an unforgettable experience.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed out of the ashes of Yasuko Onuki’s college band Mizu, Melt-Banana began in 1992 when the singer tapped Ichirou Agata to play guitar for her. The band recruited bassist Rika Hamamoto and drummer Toshiaki Sudoh, developing an unorthodox style that relied heavily on a rapid, bombastic style of drumming known as a blast beat. In 1994 the band released their debut album Speak Squeak Creak, garnering enough underground cred to earn an opening spot on tour with Jim O’Rourke. In addition to O’Rourke, the band has opened for such noteworthy bands as Tool, The Melvins, Mr. Bungle, and Fantomas, while also headlining several tours of their own. Their seventh album, 2013’s Fetch, was released to widespread critical and audience acclaim. Even scaled down to core members Onuki and Agata, the band continues to put on an awesome, other-worldly show every time they take the stage.
The absolute best show I have (or will) see in 2011.
