About

Through 25 years and eight independent albums, the last four on their own Right Coast Records, Ballyhoo! have earned the exclamation point which marks their name. Starting in the basement of their moms Aberdeen, MD, home, rocking out on guitar and drums respectively, practicing every day, brothers Howi and Donald Spangler formed the proto-punk band in the mold of Green Day and Nirvana, with an eye towards the emerging ska genre led by Goldfinger, Sublime, 311 and No Doubt.

The groups eighth and most recent studio album, the breezy, ska-fueled, hook-filled Message to the World, on their own Right Coast Records, finds the self-declared beach-rockers, having grown up in public, accepting the responsibilities of adulthood while still hanging on to their dreams of world domination. Stylistically, their music ranges from the hard-edged punk of 2018s Detonate, which captured the feelings of anger and depression from dealing with personal loss and the exhaustion generated by over a decade on the road to the island reggae beats of the follow-up, Message to the World. Whatever you want to achieve, just focus on that and work towards it, explains Howi about the Ballyhoo! ethos. Dont worry about followers, views, or even money. Just keep making good stuff. One day it may be possible to finally quit that day job and live your dream full time.Ballyhoo! is still doing just that, purveying good vibes, positivity and fun live shows meant to take you away from real life...

  • 30 years of ballyhoo!

The initial show of the summer tour was nothing less than spectacular and a complete banger! They rocked the crowd with classics and new songs! Cydeways and beach fly also showed out! Can’t wait to see them all again!

  • Great show in an awesome venue

by Robbie ritchey on 2/10/25Tally Ho Theater - LeesburgRating: 5 out of 5

This was awesome, Ballyhoo always knocks it out the park when they perform and they always have a great group of openers, the Harbor boys rock and the Cassaday concoction although I’d never heard of them I left a huge fan! It was my first time at Tally ho and it was awesome, great venue with friendly staff, my only complaint would be about reorganizing how the merch line operates, it was cramped at times and made it a bit difficult to get through when a large amount of people were entering the venue but other than that it was great!

Show was great as always! Everyone had great energy and the venue was nice.

  • Energetic

The show was energetic and lively. The sound quality could have been a little better, which is why it only has four stars.

  • Ballyhoo was fantastic

by Emmay on 9/11/24Gramercy Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I got the tickets because I really wanted to see the Mad Caddies (but I also like Ballyhoo). Quasi Kings put on a great opener - so fun to meet a new band! Loved them. Absolutely fell in love with Ballyhoo. After that performance, they may be my new favorite band. Mad Caddies on the other hand had a rather poor showing. They forgot a lot of the lyrics and just didn't sound great. Not sure what was up with them, but it was a bit of a let down. Everyone else was amazing. The venue was clean, staff was friendly, and bathrooms were easy to find & stocked with TP! A very wonderful experience at the Gramercy :-)

  • AMAZING!

One of the best experiences of my life! Got to meet them during VIP, they were amazing and so nice! They played their hearts out and I loved the energy of the band! Will definitely want to see the band live again! That was the best VIP experience I've ever had!

Got invited by a friend that was a fan. By the end of the night, they had another fan. The whole show was entertaining, good music and great venue.

  • Never dissapoints!

This is my 3rd time seeing Ballyhoo. They never disappoint! The energy from the band is always contagious and Howie's voice is just killer!

  • Best Small Concert Venue and show

    by DO’T on 7/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Blueberry Hill is an awesome small venue with a “party in the basement” feel. Ballyhoo, Tunnel Vision and Harbor Boys put on a great, intimate show. Each band, especially TV and HB, interacted so well with the crowd and really rocked. The sound system was great and the bar is big enough that the line is never more than two or three people deep. This is my new “go to” small venue.
