Through 25 years and eight independent albums, the last four on their own Right Coast Records, Ballyhoo! have earned the exclamation point which marks their name. Starting in the basement of their moms Aberdeen, MD, home, rocking out on guitar and drums respectively, practicing every day, brothers Howi and Donald Spangler formed the proto-punk band in the mold of Green Day and Nirvana, with an eye towards the emerging ska genre led by Goldfinger, Sublime, 311 and No Doubt.
The groups eighth and most recent studio album, the breezy, ska-fueled, hook-filled Message to the World, on their own Right Coast Records, finds the self-declared beach-rockers, having grown up in public, accepting the responsibilities of adulthood while still hanging on to their dreams of world domination. Stylistically, their music ranges from the hard-edged punk of 2018s Detonate, which captured the feelings of anger and depression from dealing with personal loss and the exhaustion generated by over a decade on the road to the island reggae beats of the follow-up, Message to the World. Whatever you want to achieve, just focus on that and work towards it, explains Howi about the Ballyhoo! ethos. Dont worry about followers, views, or even money. Just keep making good stuff. One day it may be possible to finally quit that day job and live your dream full time.Ballyhoo! is still doing just that, purveying good vibes, positivity and fun live shows meant to take you away from real life...
Great set from the headliner!! I had a great time and my favorite opener was the local talent. The staff at the venue was really nice too!!
All the bands were awesome. In particular Artikal Sound System. Bartenders were quick with drinks and food, and were friendly as hell Place was clean. Looking forward to going back for more shows.
The show was amazing and the venue was one of the best that I have been
Awesome live band. Great energy. Small intimate venue. Meet and greet available aftershow.
Ballyhoo was awesome and so nice!! Please come back anytime!!!
To sum it up, pretty amazing. The reason behind the four stars, it was cold in there! But I did get front row seats, even if my friends and I didn't hear most of the words over the shouting. So my suggestion: get on the balcony if you aren't the biggest fan, get there early and near the front if you MUST be near the band. Even those small inconviences, Ballyhoo! Puts on a great show. They have minimal stage setting, giving you a great view of the band members. All of them are really talented, and bring so much energy to the stage. So I highly reccomend seeing Ballyhoo!, even if you haven't heard much of their music. Also, the opening bands were great! Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas had a great indie rock sound, and On The Bright Side had great guitarists/ bassists! So to conclude, all three are worth seeing again.
I thought the opening (local) band Strange Machines was awesome. I will be watching the local listings for these guys. I'm glad the show was delayed a bit because of the snow and I caught them. Second band was okay and Ballyhoo was excellent. Too bad Nemo hurt attendance for all three.
As they always do Ballyhoo! put on an unforgettable experience, even playing two new tracks.
I really liked the venue, especially for the price. I was able to be really close to the band, it was the best concert that I have gone to and the band sounded better live than on their records.
Ballyhoo! never disappoints. Their live shows are so much fun! Danced all night!
Fantastic show. Great venue. Ballyhoo should be seen if you get the opportunity
Ballyhoo! knows how to rock a show! It was an amazing show! I had so much fun I can't wait until they come back! After the show, Howie comes down to take pictures with fans, which was awesome! The whole night was great and I recommend everyone to go see a Ballyhoo! concert!
While I can't speak to the opening acts, Ballyhoo!'s performance alone was enough to make this show a success!! Howi, Mista J, Blaze and Big D put on a great show, playing a variety of songs from their 3 latest albums. The guys have a great stage presence and really know how to engage the crowd, ensuring everyone can sing along even if it's their first time seeing the band. Having seen Ballyhoo! play in venues of several different sizes, it's safe to say that no matter how much space they have to work with, Ballyhoo! always has a good time on stage and manages to get the crowd moving!
Iration put on one amazing show!! The crowd was definitely into it and the atmosphere was great. The guys hung around afterward and signed autographs and took pictures. Loved every bit of the show.
wasn't crowded and ballhoo played an awesome show.
