  • Great sets and effects!

by Klasa666 on 7/16/25Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

This was one of my son's absolute favorites on broadway so, my daughter and I went to watch the tour. Definitely entertaining as someone who was around for the movie release as a teenager, and also for someone who has never watched the movie. Strong vocals and as stated in the title, great sets and effects.

  • Room for Improvement

by Tenacity on 7/16/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Having had seen the movie right before seeing the show, the show tries incredibly hard to copy the scenes from the movie verbatim. It took the excitement out of it, and made it feel like a high school performance with a high budget. The special effects of the second half of the show were decent but the first half needs significant improvement.

  • the best parts were not musical

by GH on 7/16/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Great adaptation of the movie to the stage. Fantastic stage effects. Costumes were great, choreography was fabulous. Acting was strong (especially George McFly's physical comedy). Music was not memorable and could have been removed without any impact on the experience. On the whole a great show for fans of the 50s and 80s.

  • Great show!

I thought the show was absolutely fantastic. I was blown away by how they made the car seem like it was actually moving on stage. Would recommend everyone to see it.

  • Best Musical

by Joe (Boston) on 7/15/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

It is was awesome. Very well put together. I love how it took the story I know and love and put their own twist on it. Adding some comedy to certain parts added to the experience. The best part was the special effects. Amazingly done.

  • Amazing tech

by ZMYaro on 7/15/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

The songs and general adaptation weren't really my jam apart from the songs returning from the film (which were excellent as always), but the outstanding marrying of physical setpieces, LED background, projection mapping, lighting, and sound design—most notably for the car sequences—was incredible. I can't strongly say it justifies the cost of admission, but if you love seeing feats like that pulled off on stage, you won't be disappointed.

  • Excitement at 88 MPH!!

by Patrick G. on 7/14/25Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

Being a huge fan of the films, I didn't have great expectations for the musical, however I was blown away. The projections were surprising specific to the performance I saw and were well integrated into the set. The sets were surprisingly reminiscient of the film. I expected to see the Delorean/Time Machine, to be rolled out as mere set dressing however I was amazed to see it utilized as a character as much as in the film. We saw it explode onto the stage, race at 88 MPH and even fly. The musical numbers didn't get in the way of the plot as can sometimes happen in musical adaptations and although the story line had some changes to accomodate it being on the stage, nearly all the memorable scenes we were eager to see recreated were there. The cast handled their parts ably and gave stellar performances. The orchestration was very reminiscent of the film and with so few members in the orchestra pit, made me wonder how much of what we heard was sequenced. All in all, if this show comes to a stage near you, I recommend you give it a go. You won't be disappointed!

  • Best I've ever seen

by pops on 7/12/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This play was fantastic. Casting was spot on as was the staging and props. There are some changes from the movie as I expected but also necessary!! The changes were brilliant and even had references to the host city, in this case Boston!! The scenes with the DeLorean were great!!! The bottom line, this play was very entertaining and thats all I ask for !! A huge thumbs up!!!!!!

  • Amazing

by TP on 7/11/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Purchased tickets December 8, 2024 waited 7 months. Was worth the wait. Amazing set and costumes and performance. The engineer who designed the delorian and made it fly made it all worth it.

  • Super show

by Bob on 7/11/25Citizens Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

It exceeded our wildest expectations. The theater of course was exemplary, steeped in the traditions of early 20th century architecture. The cast, crew, orchestra, and all were fantastic. What a great show!

  • A spectacle, a musical for the whole family!

    by broadwaylover25 on 7/10/25Rating: 5 out of 5

I saw Back To The Future in Boston on its first night here, and it was truly an amazing performance! The cast was particularly talented, and every single vocalist shined through in their performance. The ensemble and design of the production is stunning with beautiful bright costumes, and the show uses projections that make you question what part of the (very detailed) set is real or not . I had a wonderful experience at this show, and think it’s the perfect show for the whole family (and especially for anyone who loves the original movie!)

  • A Must See

by Henry on 7/2/25Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

An excellent show. The singing and dance numbers were appropriate and supported the story line. The storyline itself closely followed the movie's story line. So, if you've seen the movie, you should have no trouble following what's taking place on stage. There are four pre-existing songs that I'm sure people will easily recognize and the 22 original songs that were written for the show fit perfectly. Would I see it again, definitely. All in all, an enjoyable, fun show.

  • back to the future at sheas buffalo

by mem on 7/2/25Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

the actor who played Marty McFly was reminiscent of Michael J. Fox and the special effects were great. The musical followed the story line of the movie pretty well. some of the songs were just okay but overall it was a very entertaining show.

  • Meh Show -- Actors & Pit were fun

by Red on 7/1/25Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 2 out of 5

My beloved and I see lots of musicals, on Broadway, touring shows, and in local community and school theatre. OVERALL: This show appealed to the nostalgia for everyone who loved the film Back to the Future, but fell flat on choreography & musical score. I haven't seen so many people leave at Intermission in prior shows we've been to! THE GOOD: Lighting was lovely, and there were several moments of "Theatre Magic"which are ALWAYS appreciated. The car "appearing"and its final moment were a delight. The GF in her bedroom moving behind and then in front of the window pane (which I presume was projected and image-mapped).. good stuff! Other magical moments too. The acting was fine and one or two vocals were great! And the acting was good too. THE MEH: Choreography was overall underwhelming, the musical score was not memorable, and it was a real challenge to understand the actors for the first 10-20 minutes of the show. We'd heard the same from others who'd seen the show different nights but I presumed it was early tech issues; I'm now guessing the audio cues/faders are fully programmed per-scene and this really needs some work for the first 20 minutes. It was fine after that. Truly was surprised to see people all around us NOT return after intermission?! Strange, but I can only guess they too were underwhelmed. Ah well.. was a happy date-night all the same and I'm glad we went.
