Made the trip up from Cleveland to catch these guys and they did not disappoint from a performance perspective. They played all the hits and did 3 from the most recent, superb self-titled album: Rollin' Along, Moonlight Rider, and Waiting Game. Fred has lost little to nothing on his powerful voice and Randy sounded awesome on his vocal songs and of course, on his guitar. The rest of the band does a great job holding the rhythm down while Randy solos and when they need those big 4/5-part harmonies (Four Wheel Drive and Let it Ride were stellar in the harmony department).
Unfortunately, their set was marred by sound issues. Overall, the show was much too quiet. This is Bachman Turner, not James Taylor--turn it up! They should have been thunderous. Moreover, the mix wasn't good, even at a low volume. Backing vocals got drowned out, guitar solos were inaudible, and the bass was awfully low in the mix. Worse yet, the guitars were buried in the mix. And most offensive of all, which 1 of the 3 guitar players was buried most in the mix? You guessed it, Randy. A quiet show was one thing, but a poorly mixed quiet show really put a damper on things. The most frustrating part about it was that it seemed like they were starting to get it right at some point in the middle of the show, and it went right back to a crummy mix.
Their road crew went through an extended sound check, repeatedly asking the guys at the board to cut or raise certain frequencies on the various vocal mics, continuously tuning and play-testing the guitars/basses, and re-micing the drums. Apparently, it was to no avail and I really don't understand why. Maybe they were trying to be too scientific about the whole thing, I don't know. All I know is the 5 previous bar/tribute bands at this festival all sounded louder and were mixed much better. Then, the opener BT comes out and it's thin, quiet, and anemic.
I don't know what the issue was, but I hope it's addressed in the future for these guys, because they performed like pros. Great playing all around. It's just a shame we couldn't hear it too well.
