Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Live

Since its birth in the late 1930s, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has earned its place as one of the most renowned orchestras in the nation. With over 150 live shows annually, each performance delivers depth and mastery brought forth by the ASO's renowned Maestros and award-winning guest artists. The 2022-2023 season marks the 78th for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and guests can expect a historic and exciting year for classical music in Atlanta. In 2022, the Symphony welcomed its fifth-ever Music Director, Nathalie Stutzmann. Described as "a consummate rock star on the podium" by ArtsATL, Maestro Stutzmann is expected to usher in a new era of musical culture for the ASO and Atlanta as a whole. Stutzmann began her first season featuring 13 living composers, including Hilary Purrington, Tyshawn Sorey and Joel Thompson. In her first season, Stutzmann is also leading eight programs featuring the classical masters, including Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Brahms' "Third Symphony" and a two-week Bach celebration culminating in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." For fans of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's returning and pop culture series, you won't want to miss highlights like the hit program Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams or performances of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtrack with a unique HD video multimedia experience.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Concert

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was originally founded by Anne Grace O'Callaghan in 1939 as the In-and-About High School Atlanta Symphony. As Supervisor of Music for Atlanta high schools, O'Callaghan started the passion project by recruiting the best high school players across the region. By 1943, Chicago Conductor Henry Sopkin had joined the ranks to lead the young musicians. The talented group's performances quickly drew the interest of patrons and investors, and by 1945 the Atlanta Music Club had offered Sopkin an eight-month contract to develop the Atlanta Youth Symphony. Finally, in 1947, the Youth Symphony dropped the "Youth" moniker and played their first concert as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra -- the start of decades to come as a world-renowned institution of classical music. Since then, ASO has traveled nationwide and internationally, been hosted by U.S. Presidents and won 27 Grammy Awards as of 2022 in Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Performance categories.

  • Beautiful Performance Celebrating Christ!

by PJHJ on 12/23/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The talent and joy of the symphony and each member of the chorus was evident . The special music that was penned hundreds of years ago to honor Christmas was performed excellently. A very special evening was experienced by all in attendance.

  • ASO CHRISTMAS CONCERT With Choruses

by Kalolena on 12/19/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This concert is the most Beautiful and Unforgettable Christmas event I have ever experienced. I have been to it each year and it just gets better and better. The Stmphony Chorus, the Mirehouse Glee and Spivey Hall children were Priceless. Excellent mixture of sacred and secular music.

  • Fabulous

by Tish on 12/18/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

We had out of town family in for the Holidays. The symphony seemed like a perfect entertainment venue. It was great; however, I would have loved for there to have been more traditional Christmas music. It was a wonderful experience!!!

  • Such an enjoyable event

by JgV on 12/18/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We love this Christmas performance every year. It’s a wonderful ensemble of talented musicians, singers and choruses that come together for an uplifting holiday event. This year was no exception and it was throughly enjoyed by our group. We Highly recommend it for holiday cheer and spirit! (I sound like Buddy the Elf :-)

  • A Magnificent Performance

by Denice on 12/18/24Rating: 5 out of 5

I enjoy the ASO whenever I go. I took my mother a few years ago. She enjoyed it as well. This is one of my favorites. I prepaid for parking and that was good. I had a difficult time getting the Ticketmaster parking and show tickets to pull up on my phone. Thankfully, my name was on the parking list. Then I had to go to box office and have a ticket printed out because of problems retrieving the ticket. I truly enjoyed the three choruses especially Morehouse Glee Club. The whole performance was sooo wonderful. Made for a great afternoon!!

  • Our favorite tradition

by LauraLee ATL on 12/18/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We have been attending this event since Robert Shaw’s era in the 70s. Our Mom even used to sing in the chorus. It wouldn’t be the holidays without it. We love that the program has primarily stayed as it was through the years. Norman Mackenzie is a delight and the musicianship of the symphony and choruses is top notch.

  • Wonderful Timeless Tradition

by Keith on 12/17/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Don't get me wrong, I love hearing new material, but at Christmas I want to hear the music that has become a wonderful tradition. The ASOC was amazing as always, and the Morehouse College & Spivey Hall Children's Choir were just glorious. This concert has gone through few changes over the years, but that is part of its soulfulness and homage to tradition. Can't say how much I loved it enough.

  • Holiday Show

  • beautiful evening

by Jim on 12/16/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The Atlanta Symphony Christmas was great. The three choirs brought traditional Christmas carols to life. The orchestra played pieces from Handel's Messiah as well as from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker rounded out the program. There were a couple of sing alongs as well.

  • An Excellent Evening

by Kathy on 12/15/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I invited a good friend from Western North Carolina to visit us and go with us to the concert after hearing how sad she was given the damage and destruction in her home area. We loved the Christmas cheer concert as much as she did! The ASO & Chorus entertained us alongside the Morehouse College Glee Club and the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir. The music was lovely. The crowd sang along and gave standing ovations to the musicians and singers several times, even to the surprise of the conductor. It was a wonderful evening!

  • Outstanding

by Kimberly on 10/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Roderick Cox is a phenomenal conductor, and the Atlanta Symphony met the challenge head on! I barely took a breath the entire program. Breathtaking!

  • Bery good experience

We enjoyed the concert. The only complaint I have is the stage floor was filthy. It make one wonder if the seating area was cleaned appropriately.

  • POOR SOUND

by RClaus on 5/24/24Ameris Bank Amphitheatre - AlpharettaRating: 3 out of 5

Great concert line up, host/conductor was very engaging and informative. Orchestra was top tier. Sound system was woefully inadequate. I know there are better was to amplify the sound of an orchestra - I have been to the Hollywood Bowl and 2/3 of the way from the stage you can hear every nuance. Not the case with this orchestra concert. Get a better system for this venue or stop having this sort of concert

  • My favorite venue

by Mike on 5/23/24Ameris Bank Amphitheatre - AlpharettaRating: 4 out of 5

The experience was great. The actors were a great touch to connect with the attendees. My only gripe was that it was not loud enough when the orchestra played.

  • Louder

by Sue on 5/23/24Ameris Bank Amphitheatre - AlpharettaRating: 3 out of 5

Music was great. It was beautiful evening with a good breeze. Just wish it had been louder. Not sure how the people on the lawn even heard the music. The noise from vendors closing up was louder than the music and distracting.

  • THAT WAS A BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE!!!

My friend and I went to see the concert and it was a wonderful experience. The orchestra is insanely talented especially the flute section and I am looking forward to going to more concerts in the future!
