About

What are the Atlanta Motor Speedway Races?

Hampton, Georgia, is home to one of the most iconic tracks in stock car racing. Atlanta Motor Speedway has been in operation since 1960, and its 1.54 mile quad-oval track has long been known as one of the fastest in motorsports. In addition to hosting the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 in the spring, Atlanta Motor Speedway is home to a Saturday doubleheader of the NASCAR Xfinity Series EchoPark 250, and the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Vet Tix/Camping World 200. Throughout the spring, summer and fall, AMS also hosts O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags, a series of drag races involving both street racers and motorcycles on its 1/8 mile pit road. Depending on the configuration, Atlanta Motor Speedway has a capacity between 71,000 and 125,000.

Atlanta Motor Speedway History

Ground was broken in 1958 for what was originally known as Atlanta International Raceway, opening on July 31, 1960, with Fireball Roberts winning the inaugural Dixie 300. From 1960 until 2011, the Speedway was home to two annual NASCAR events: the Atlanta 500 in the spring, and the Dixie 500 in the fall. In 1990, Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the track, adding condominiums to the course in 1994 and almost completely rebuilding the track in 1997. A 2011 realignment of the NASCAR schedule eliminated what was then known as the Kobalt Tools 500, leaving what is now called the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 as Atlanta Motor Speedway's sole NASCAR event.

Some of the most iconic moments in NASCAR history have taken place at the Speedway. Before the advent of the Race to the Cup, AMS was often the last stop on what is now known as the NASCAR Cup circuit, leading to some incredible finishes to the season. The 1992 Hooters 500 featured Richard Petty's final NASCAR race, Jeff Gordon's NASCAR debut, and a legendary ending in which Bill Elliott won the race, but Alan Kulwicki won the Winston Cup title. From 2015 to 2019, Atlanta was home to the second race in the NASCAR Cup season, preceded only by the Daytona 500. In 2019, Brad Keselowski held off Martin Truex Jr. to win the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500.

Always a great time at any NASCAR race!

by SmokinDaveWNC on 2/27/19Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

I must admit my last trip to the Atlanta Motor Speedway had been a while. This was my first race back at Atlanta since 1989! It had been way too long and I realized how much I had really missed coming to Atlanta! Since that time though, I've developed health conditions with my heart (A-FIB) and I get short of breath and breakout in a cold sweat when I have to walk very long distances. I must say that all of the staff at both tracks (Daytona and Atlanta) have gone out of their way to help me get to wherever I needed to be all around each track and at times they even used Speedway vehicles to get me to Raceway Ministries breakfast last weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. I was filming all the activities during that breakfast and when I had almost finished the Director of Raceway Ministries came over to me and asked how my breakfast was and did I want anything else? I asked her if she could tell me all about the Raceway Ministries and I wanted to help spread the word about the Raceway Ministries, and how I could help to share all of the great things the Raceway Ministries does at all the tracks and what tracks they are at and offer the FREE breakfast and morning service thru Music and fellowship trying to spread the gospel! After we talked for a bit she had already told me whenever I was finished she was going to take me in her cart back where I needed to be back to grandstand entrance when the gates opened at 10. Once inside, they took me up the hill to a drop off area just inside the food court areas almost to your seat! All the staff at both tracks went above and beyond to help me and I truly appreciate it and all the great things that they do for those people with disabilities to allow us to enjoy the race. Without this help it would make it very difficult for most of us with disabilities! Great job done all you guys a BIG THUMBS UP! Thanks #SmokinDaveWNC at Mountain Streamz TV

    Weather delay

by Issyro on 3/1/18Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

On the 25th of February, we had lots of rain which was expected. Original race start was 1400 and that morning changed to 1300 via website. Got to the track at 1230, and race started at close to 1500! With those dual neon screens and a loud speaker system not a WORD was passed to us in the stands as to the change in start time. We were kept guessing..... a simple PA system announcement would have helped or eleven a simple note of the delays on the 2 screens out on the track.., it was terrible communication per the racetrack staff!,,,,, you can do better....

    Ticket items

by ToddLong on 2/28/18Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

I had my three tickets mail to my house and they arrived. My brother and I took my 80 year father to the race. It was a first trip for my brother and send for my father and I. At the gate, our tickets could not be read so we were sent to customer service booth where we stood in a light rain. They could not figure out what happened. I showed them the TM receipt where we paid $225 for the tickets. It took about 15 minutes to get new tickets printed that worked. They said it was something on TM end. My experience was dampened by the nervousness that I might not actually get in with paying twice. We got in finally and had a great time but TM experience was not good.

    Needs small facility improvements

by Chrome48435783 on 2/28/18Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

The race was fantastic, side by side racing all around the track. Despite harvick dominating it was still amazing. The exhibits outside the track seemed to take a hit this yet. Didn’t seem like there was as much to do outside this year. Also security harassed me saying I stole a hat out of one of the store when I clearly bought it out of a souvenir trailer. I had to argue with them that neither one of the two hats I had (The one I purchased and the one that was on top of my head) was even being sold in the store that they were accusing me of stealing it from.

There’s something about being there for the start of a race where 36 cars are driving by at 200mph. Highly recommend experiencing a race at least once.

    Nascar is so exciting.

by 07ImpalaSS on 3/10/17Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

I came over from the UK to watch this race, It was fantastic, the noise, the speed, the lead changes, I loved it. I have recommended Nascar to everybody I know in the UK & that it is much more exciting than Formula One.... The parking was great, getting in & out was no problem, the staff were very friendly & there was plenty going on pre race.
