About

What are the Atlanta Motor Speedway Races?

Hampton, Georgia, is home to one of the most iconic tracks in stock car racing. Atlanta Motor Speedway has been in operation since 1960, and its 1.54 mile quad-oval track has long been known as one of the fastest in motorsports. In addition to hosting the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 in the spring, Atlanta Motor Speedway is home to a Saturday doubleheader of the NASCAR Xfinity Series EchoPark 250, and the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Vet Tix/Camping World 200. Throughout the spring, summer and fall, AMS also hosts O'Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags, a series of drag races involving both street racers and motorcycles on its 1/8 mile pit road. Depending on the configuration, Atlanta Motor Speedway has a capacity between 71,000 and 125,000.

Atlanta Motor Speedway History

Ground was broken in 1958 for what was originally known as Atlanta International Raceway, opening on July 31, 1960, with Fireball Roberts winning the inaugural Dixie 300. From 1960 until 2011, the Speedway was home to two annual NASCAR events: the Atlanta 500 in the spring, and the Dixie 500 in the fall. In 1990, Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the track, adding condominiums to the course in 1994 and almost completely rebuilding the track in 1997. A 2011 realignment of the NASCAR schedule eliminated what was then known as the Kobalt Tools 500, leaving what is now called the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 as Atlanta Motor Speedway's sole NASCAR event.

Some of the most iconic moments in NASCAR history have taken place at the Speedway. Before the advent of the Race to the Cup, AMS was often the last stop on what is now known as the NASCAR Cup circuit, leading to some incredible finishes to the season. The 1992 Hooters 500 featured Richard Petty's final NASCAR race, Jeff Gordon's NASCAR debut, and a legendary ending in which Bill Elliott won the race, but Alan Kulwicki won the Winston Cup title. From 2015 to 2019, Atlanta was home to the second race in the NASCAR Cup season, preceded only by the Daytona 500. In 2019, Brad Keselowski held off Martin Truex Jr. to win the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500.

    Awesome Race!

by Russcky on 3/8/10Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

Great Race, the Track was fast, weather was good and the drinks were flowing. Got into a little traffic coming down so we didn't have as much time to tail-gate before the race considering that the race was early, but we still had a ton of fun. A little crowded in our Row in the Winners section, but that was fun as the crowd roared almost as loud as the engines. AMS does it again, love the racing there now and the Night Race later this summer should be even better!

    Kobalt 500

by Diamondpacker on 3/8/10Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

This was my first visit to Atlanta Motor Speedway in about 10 years. I was blown away by how efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable all track personnel were. The seats we had were great and the racing was fantastic. I was happy to see the traffic problems that plagued this venue in the past have been corrected. I will definitely return for future races.

    Atlanta Motor Speedway was Great!!!

by SeaDoggie on 3/8/10Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

Best Nascar Race I have been too. It is true Atlanta has the best finishes... both of them. Keselowski got wrecked and it set up two Green White Checkers. Blue Deuce threaded the needle and won. Free parking, coolers allowed, great weather and an unbelievable finish... it doesn't get any better then that!

    Mayhem in Atlanta

by BunnieBacon on 3/8/10Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

This race was fantastic. Great seats-Champsionship stands, upper deck are the way to go-sections 240-260 put you right in front of the start finish line. The payback between Edwards and Keselowski was shocking....but what race fans love to see. And a wreck on the green/white checkered flag made it even more exciting. Atlanta Motor Speedway is a great place to see a race-easy to get to, easy to park, entertaining and good racing! Don't miss it under the lights in September!

by GaPeach5287 on 3/8/10Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton

The seats we chose were the best we've sat in yet, and this was our 3rd race at AMS. The weather was nothing short of glorious, and the race itself was phenomenal. A banner day for NASCAR fans!!

A little uneventful at times, but that was racing. Kevin Harvick won! The chili cheese dog as tastey and the beer was cold. The program, tshirt, collectible car for $13 was a great souvenir deal. AMS is a nice facility.
