I have seen Dead Can Dance two other times and seeing them at the Ryman was the best of the three.

    Words Escape Me

by DrumChild on 9/7/12Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

It's hard to review this show when there are no words to describe the beauty, the majesty, and the long awaited jitters I had for this show. My skin was actually tired from all the goosebumps given by the majesty of Lisa's voice! 2 hour performance..played the entire new album..I had waited almost 20 years to catch this band live and it was worth every penny i spent! The music has a way of reaching inside you, grabbing your soul, and lifting it to the highest level of the heavens. I can't really say anything more except if you miss the opportunity to catch them live..you've missed out on something beyond anything you have ever experienced!

    Dead Can Dance Always Deilver..........

by BDGKKM on 9/7/12Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

A great top to bottom performance. Only complaint is they didn't play 4 hours and include more back catalog but I wouldn't call that a complaint as much as a testament. Hope to see Brendan and Lisa back here in 2013!

DCD: Back Together & Beyond My Expectations

by raslavens on 9/7/12Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

It's as if time stood still. And they were better live than they are on their recordings. Hard to believe, but true. Amazing performances, amazing voices. So glad I finally got to witness Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard and their immense musical talent in person.

Dead Can Dance- not to be missed!

by DCDfan on 9/7/12Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - Atlanta

Dead Can Dance were amazing in Atlanta. They sounded great, and were gracious enough to give their very appreciative audience three encores. A good mix of new material, fan favorites, and covers.

Excellent show, performance, sound. When they sang together, that was the best, all the sound effects, instruments, percussion effects were perfect. Very professional in what they do.

    Dead Can Dance

by GeoMetro on 9/7/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Awesome. The band, who I have wanted to see live since the 1990's, was absolutely incredible. The venue was spectacular. With pew seating (a first for me at a concert, but quite cool), the atmosphere at the Ryman Auditorium was fantastic. And the sound, the sound at this venue is the best I have ever heard live, period.

    Dean Can Dance was mesmerizing!

    by GJW1 on 9/7/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Really great show! Hypnotic and beautiful. The Ryman Auditorium, an old church, was the perfect venue. Lasted just under three hours without a break including David Kuchermann's opening set percussion compositions on the hand pans and tambourine. They apparently loved it too rewarding us with four encores. Highly recommended!!

    An experience like none other...

by Waldolc on 9/7/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

If you have never been to a musical performance at the Ryman, then go. No matter what genre or style you're into, the Ryman Auditorium is an excellent place to listen. Nashville is a music city and that means we love and respect it all. We get into the show, we adore the musicians. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard are geniuses whose music transcends time. The soundscapes they create and share are like none other. To hear songs ranging back to their first LP to the latest and to witness the sheer mastery of voices and techniques... I feel blessed, to say the very least. They are as good if not better than when they began their journey 30 years ago.

    An unforgettable evening with DCD

    by JeffW71 on 9/6/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I've only waited about 18 years to see Dead Can Dance live and I was not disappointed. This was an amazing concert, one that any DCD fan would be should catch while they are on tour for their new album Anastasis. Having never been to the "Mother Church" it was wonderful to see DCD in a landmark venue such as Ryman Auditorium. The original stained glass windows from when the Ryman was a church so long ago was a fitting tribute to a band that produced a near religious feeling in its fans. Promptly at 8pm percussionist David Kuckhermann came onstange and performed three pieces to warm everyone up. Two pieces were played on these metal wok-like instruments called Hangs and another on a tambourine. He's quite impressive and got huge rounds of applause from the audience. I felt bad for the hundreds of people that were still streaming in after he was finished who missed his performance. He joined DCD as one of the two percussionists so all was not lost for the late-comers. It was a short wait (but felt longer) when the lights dimmed and DCD came onto the stage. I think everyone collectively held their breath when Lisa Gerrard floated (she didn't walk I don't believe... more glided an inch above the stage) out and took her place. She's 51 but looked more like 35, dressed in a beautiful dress and a long golden cape that was entirely fitting for her mermerizing presence. Brendan looks his age, with a now bald head and grey goatee. Brendan Perry opened things up with Children of the Sun, the first song from their new album. It was a good choice as it's one of my favorites from the new album and is a bit more accessible than some DCD songs, perhaps to help those in the audience not completely obsessed with DCD get into the swing of things. Brendan's voice sounds fantastic still, his rich baritone giving life to the songs heady lyrics. Lisa then launced into Anabasis, also from the new album. You could feel the wave of euphoria from the crowd when the first notes of Lisa's perfect voice came floating into the Ryman. Then the opening notes of Rakim, one of my personal favorite DCD songs of all time, sounded and the crowd was ecstatic. This is a stripped-down DCD with only two percussionists and two keyboardists so some songs like Rakim were not as full and vibrant as one would hear on the their live album Toward the Within. Still, hearing both Lisa and Brendan sing together on the same song was so moving and one of my favorite pieces of the evening. Everyone raves about the impeccible sound that the Ryman has during concerts, and for the most part this is true. However the soundboard guys at the Ryman must have been having some issues trying to contain DCD at times. While most of the songs sounded great, when DCD would really get going with heavy percussion and Lisa would unchain her unbelieveably powerful vocals there was some definite distortion issues a few times. I felt the Ryman sound crew were a bit too used to simple acoustic concerts (which didn't tax the amps) or alt-rock bands (when you can't really hear any distortion). This distortion in particular was felt during the one misstep of the evening, The The Host of the Seraphim from DCD's album The Serpent's Egg. Lisa and Brendan sang together on this song and for some reason they just didn't mesh as well as they did on the other songs that featured both singers. While part of it may have been the two singers, the sound simply didn't sound right and the distortion issues in particular marred the performance. This is one of my only complaints however. The entire concert was mesmerizing and I sat, sometimes mouth agape, as I watched a invigorated band weave it's way through 19 songs (including the entire new album). If only the few drunken louts screaming in between songs (and shockingly a few times during softer parts of songs) had stayed home. I found it almost unbelievable that DCD fans would act like that. Lisa took such things well, quickly replying to a fan screaming "We love you Lisa!" with a smooth "and I love you" that brought a huge round of applause. While Brendan seemed mostly business, Lisa smiled throughout the concert, clapping and smiling repeatedly for her bandmates throughout the evening. Another highlight was the sexy and talented Astrid Williamson who played keyboards and sang backup vocals on a number of songs. Towards the end of the evening Astrid song alongside Lisa (I forget which song, sorry!) and somehow managed to hold her own against Lisa's powerful vocals which is quite the feat. She has a number of solo albums that I may have to check out. Everyone expects an encore when a band leaves the stage...DCD gave us three encores. The first encore began with Brendan singing The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove and the crowd went wild. The screaming, clapping, and rhythmic banging of feet between each encore shook the entire building. Lisa ended the concert with a un-recorded song called Rising of the Moon that she's hinted may become a new recorded DCD song in the future. From other reviews and blogs it appears that DCD plays the same setlist every night. It would be nice if they varied things a bit for those diehard fans that would like to see multiple concerts. It was a wonderful evening and one concert I will never forget. We can only hope that this will not be the last we see or hear from DCD. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could but I'll round to 5 stars because its not every day that you get to see DCD live. Simply amazing.

    Mesmerizing, Uplifting, Divine

by Nythiul on 9/5/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This performance was absolutely amazing. I was happy to have brought some friends with me to share in this experience. The music of Dead Can Dance has been a favorite of mine for many years and they never fail to deliver. Brendan and Lisa have such different vocal styles, but somehow they mesh seamlessly. Lisa's voice is so otherworldly and the intensity of it is only magnified in their live performance.

Lisa ethereal, Brendan cranky, music glorious!

by DeJacusse on 9/5/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Dead Can Dance at the DPAC in Durham NC was like floating on a raft in the middle of the ocean. The synths, Lisa Gerrard's incredible voice, all the middle eastern modes and polyrhythms launched me right out of my body. I love Brendan's voice too like an old poet of the sea. We had a moment during the show when people were shouting out titles they wanted to hear. Those people are at all the shows- you know, the ones who are desperate fans of the band and want everyone to know it. Brendan got fussy with them - " Sounds like its karaoke night. Later we' ll all get naked and jump into a fucking jacuzzi together! " Well, this did shut folks up, but also created a rather pathetic vibe in the room for a moment. Maybe he wasn't feeling well or just wanted people to appreciate what they were hearing. They played a lot of tunes off their new CD, which is more mellow and floaty as opposed to the driving rhythmic frenzy that DCD can groove. I loved it! Most every concert I have seen at DPAC has been too loud. The volume muffles and distorts the sound of the music. I think they need an acoustic advisor to help bands get the best sound in the place. It is a great venue. And this loudness thing happens other places too.
