Since they haven't played a show in just about 10 years it would've taken a lot to make it not worth seeing. Lisa Gerrard was fantastic, as was Brandon Perry. The accompanying drummers were amazing, so were the keys. Their music is (of course) phenomenal, but seeing them play live was even more exciting. I missed them the last time around, so I can't compare to previous shows, but all in all a great set. The sound crew at the Orpheum was less than terrible, however. I've worked sound before, and it was all I could do not to grind my teeth and develop a twitch. It's one thing for mics to go out, it's another when you don't figure out the problem and the instrument just goes unmic'd song after song. At that point, if it's really the mic--swap it between songs... AT LEAST. Perry was more than frustrated, as was Gerrard. Plain to see. She had to stop singing 2-3 times due to mechanical difficulties.. And a few of the non conventional instruments went totally unheard. That aside! Still worth seeing, without a doubt, and I would still go see someone play at the Orpheum.. If I knew they wouldn't be playing for another 10 years.
This was by far the best show I have seen in Vancouver
I have always liked the eclectic music of Dead Can Dance and saw them once in 1996 in Atlanta at a very upscale venue. Ever since then, I was hoping they would tour live again because it was a VERY worthwhile show!!! The fans who went were mostly all dressed up in cool looking clothes except for me (I just had on a tee shirt and jeans), so it was fun to "people watch" before and after the show. To say the least, the crowd was very diverse! As for the show, the music was great to hear live! They are all great musicians! However, back when I saw them, there was not much of a light show, so if you are expecting to be dazzled by lights, you may be disappointed. I have seen Pink Floyd every single time they toured since 1975 and they have an awesome light show that no band has ever matched. ( I have seen over 300 live concerts). Even though I love a great light show and Dead Can Dance did not have one, I will still see them again because it was a VERY memorable experience! If you are not familiar with their music, I suggest listening to some of their CDs. I think you can rent a live DVD on Netflix from one of their shows around 1998. Even though I hate that they happen to be playing on a Wednesday night instead of the weekend, my wife and I are still definitely going to NOT miss their live show!!! We will just have to sleep in on Thursday morning to recover from the "festive" mood we will be in at the night of the show.
Been a fan for over 20 years and seeing them live is unbelievable! Lisa can bring everyone in a room to a stand-still! Her voice is mesmerizing! Please go see Dead Can Dance. I just wish I was at a venue that allowed you to stand up and dance!
