About

This is OKLAHOMA! as youve never seen or heard it beforereimagined for the 21st century and the Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Musical. Direct from an acclaimed run on Broadway comes an OKLAHOMA! that looks and sounds like America today. The Daily Beast raves Forget your traditional idea of Oklahoma!. Daniel Fishs daring, utterly absorbing re-interpretation is differentbrilliantly so. OKLAHOMA! tells a story of a community banding together against an outsider, and the frontier life that shaped America. Upending the sunny romance of a farmer and a cowpoke, this production lets us experience Rodgers and Hammersteins greatness anew.(The New Yorker). Without changing a word of text, this visionary production allows the classic musical and our country to be seen in a whole new light.

    Oklahoma, OK!!

by rinda on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Loved the production. The music is the same, of course, but the interpretations are new and tied to the characters and action, so the characters become more real, more 4 dimensional, through the songs. It was fun having the accompanists on stage too. Some voices really stood out: Ado Annie, Curly, Judd. Highly recommend seeing this Oklahoma!

    Dark and not for kids

by Rtothep on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This was not a good version of this musical and that’s putting it mildly. It was dark, slow and not appropriate for kids and we had our 12 and 9 year old with us. Thank God my 12 year old went to the bathroom while a suicide convincing was happening. I distracted my 9 year old. I understand this is an older musical but to take it and make it dark and heavy in a time when life has been too dark and heavy for years is awful. Suicide is nothing to take likely or convince someone to do. I have never left a show at intermission- until now. It was just a terrible rendition of a great classic. Wish I hadn’t spent the money.

    Shut Out and Poorer

by Bill on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

As folks who lived in Oklahoma for 20 years and who have seen this musical performed in many, many settings, we bought tickets months ago for us and three of our grandchildren. As we got closer to the performance, Covid was ramping up at higher rates than ever, and our grandchildren were too young to be totally vaccinated. We were afraid to try to attend so applied to return our tickets. Our request was denied "out of hand" with basically the response being, "Too bad." We tried to sell the tickets through the ticket agency but were unsuccessful and had to eat the tickets. Never again with Chicago Theater!

    WORST SHOW EVER

by Sbxlady on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I don't even know where to begin with rating this show. It was dark, confusing, and absurd. I can't believe that I spent money and time on this. My daughter and I go to almost all the shows in Chicago and have never walked out, but I was sure tempted to this time. Looking forward to Moulin Rouge!!

    Great until the end

by Music Fan on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

We really loved this...the cast is amazing. Until the end — was there a point being made? What a ruination of a great, feelgood experience. R&H should sue from beyond over this. I wish I could get a refund.

    Unfortunate adaptation of a classic

by AB on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Really wanted to like this version of Oklahoma and stayed for the entire performance to give it a chance…unfortunately, there was nothing likable or interesting about the performance. Besides Laurie, the actors voices were weak and they often seemed disinterested in the production. The classic comedic moments didn’t work and the staging was just bizarre, dark and lazy. Wish I could get my money back.

    Boring and joyless

by Fine Arts Fan on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Poor acting, little dancing, strident messaging not integrated to the storyline, and a poor set design: What more could a Covid starved fine arts going want? Save yourself a lot of disappointment and don’t go. It’s only exceptional in how bad it is.

    NOT Oklahoma

by WeekendTheater on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This was the most disappointing theater experience I have ever had. In fact, there were times that I felt bad that the actors were part of this production. This is a new musical loosely based on the original Oklahoma musical (which is what we thought we were going to). Instead of that fun and upbeat production, this was dark, edgy, sexual, and sometimes just downright strange (like, "what was that?"). If you are thinking of attending, be sure to thoroughly read the reviews of real patrons who have attended. We didn't walk out early because the tix were expensive, and like some crazy experiences in life, it's hard to turn your gaze away from a tragic situation....

    Disappointed — and Weird

by KW on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

In this rendition of Oklahoma!, the director has tried so hard to be different and avant-guarde that he has ruined it. There is very little physical interaction between the cast — the set design for the first act makes that almost impossible. Very little emotion. I get turning Judd Frye into the basement brooding hacker sort but almost everything else is too contrived. I felt sorry for the cast.

A horrible production of a very famous musical

by Bill K. on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This production and performances were worse than the worst high school performance you can imagine. 1 set, that is it. The singing and acting were terrible. They took a great broadway musical and prostituted it. Anyone who had to sit through this horrible excuse for a performance should not only get there money back, they should be paid for having to sit through this. Hopefully, the city of Chicago will never again be associated with this kind of garbage.

    Fantastic!

by chuck on 1/24/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

What a treat - a totally enthralling performance of the classic musical. Don't expect the big band or the usual dismissal of the darker themes at work in this play. But, with an open mind, you are sure to enjoy yourself. Would highly recommend.

    Laughable

    by Ael on 1/24/22

Absolutely horrible. The worst production I have ever seen. I wish I could get those 3 hours of my life back, along with my money. I thought the update to the show might make it more relatable and less old fashioned but it was a complete failure. It was disjointed and nonsensical. Redeeming qualities include the band and leading lady's voice, the remainder was aweful.

    A bizarre Event

by NS on 1/24/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

The first musical where I personally witnessed approximately 40 people leave at intermission- we should have followed them out. Don't make the same mistake!

    Worst Broadway Revival Ever

by GiGi on 1/24/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Without a doubt, the worst production I’ve ever seen. The stage was set like a table reading, dry-run with all cast members sitting at IKEA looking folding tables listening to each actor’s lines, and with the oddest addition - stacks of Bud Light beer in cans on each table…why?? The acting was OK, the singing was average though the volume was so low you could barely hear anyone and the set was totally unimaginative, but the strange, never-ending dance scene that went on and on for so long I finally threw in the towel and left in the middle of it at the top of Act II. We left bewildered, shocked, amazed and dumbfounded that anyone would do what they did to such an endearing and fan favorite Broadway classic. Do not waste your money. Horrible!!

    I don't recommend it

by aceventura on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Boring... not too many other adjectives. First part had was too long, and like perishing play. I left before the end.....

    Very disappointed.

    by J.S. on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

The play took a creative, musical classic, joyous, and exciting work into something that was boring, fragmented, a frozen stage setting, and uninteresting at best. It seemed that the actors were either lost, uninterested or embarrassed in their roles during the play. The female lead was talented and energetic with great stage presence, but even she couldn't save a production that seemed to be lost and lacking direction.

Extremely boring - left at intermission

by DMA on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I’ve been to a lot of shows but never any this bad. The writer spun Oklahoma in a very weird fashion. There was a point where it went black in the theatre for an uncomfortable amount of time and then had an entire song with closeups in the dark on their faces. It was just really odd. Our group was not the only ones that left at intermission. I’ve seen high school plays better than this one.

    Truly Fantastic

by Ian on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This show flipped everything I thought I knew about Oklahoma on its head in the best way possible. I felt respected and challenged, as well as having a great time overall. I'd recommend this show to anyone interested in going a little deeper into this classic musical than what they're used to. Truly fantastic.

    Expect Changes

    by M. E. on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Expect this show to be different, and if you go in with an open-mind you will be able to enjoy and appreciate what the director and actors are trying to accomplish.

    Amateur hour

by Theatre goer on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Not a very sophisticated production. When it was going bad they simply cranked up the volume of the music.
