About

This is OKLAHOMA! as youve never seen or heard it beforereimagined for the 21st century and the Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Musical. Direct from an acclaimed run on Broadway comes an OKLAHOMA! that looks and sounds like America today. The Daily Beast raves Forget your traditional idea of Oklahoma!. Daniel Fishs daring, utterly absorbing re-interpretation is differentbrilliantly so. OKLAHOMA! tells a story of a community banding together against an outsider, and the frontier life that shaped America. Upending the sunny romance of a farmer and a cowpoke, this production lets us experience Rodgers and Hammersteins greatness anew.(The New Yorker). Without changing a word of text, this visionary production allows the classic musical and our country to be seen in a whole new light.

    Bizarre and not good

by Eileen on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

It could have been weird and good, but instead it wasn't.

I saw wonderful Tony award winning musical Oklahoma.

by Lee on 1/23/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

You had ro show proof of vaccination and photo id, have bags searched to enter. No food or drinks inside, bar was closed. You had to wear a mask. Oklahoma is a long play, 2 hours and 45 minutes with intermission. I went to the bathroom at intermission and no lines. Besutiful theater. In Oklahoma the bluegrass band is on stage playing behind the actors wearing masks. The actors do not wear masks. It was a very emotiinal show. Beautiful voices and a lot of violence. I loved it. Simple set.

I loved this show! I hope more people are it before the run ends!

    Certainly not a peak experience...

by Schaf on 1/22/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Incoherent and boring. Best thing was that the theater was not crowded so we could change our seats...

Awful. What a waste of my time.

by Helene on 1/22/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Great actors but awful writing. R&H are rolling over in their graves. Terrible. Waste of my money and time.

    Oklahoma meets Carrie

by Cheryl on 1/22/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Hands down worst production ever. Very dark. Think Oklahoma meets Carrie meets Criminal Minds. Leaves viewers scratching their heads.

    Half and Half

by Melli on 1/22/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Believe it or not, this was my first time seeing Oklahoma. The first half was great. Really enjoyed it. It was funny and musical and well done. The second half ..got weird. They were trying to do a modern remix and it just ..got weird. They had strange interpretive dancing, Blair Witch Project like videos, awkwardly long silent pauses and rounded out with a "Quentin Tarantino" style ending...we left feeling a little disoriented..like "what just happened?...this was supposed to be a family friendly kitschy musical".. So...I'm not sure..maybe your intrigued..it definitely wasn't a traditional second half...but still entertaining...just a little weird..

    Shocking…not in a good way.

by Nathalie on 1/21/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

For those that love or even know Oklahoma! this is a turn for the worst. Dark for the sake of being “evocative” - it came across as wanting to be part of “woke” culture nowadays. The second act in particular was hard to swallow, though the whole musical read as someone’s obnoxious and pretentious attempt at being “deep” - like a college theater student’s “innovation”…. And Oklahoma! does not lend itself to that endeavor given its setting/time.

    Can't recommend

    by S. on 1/20/22

Awful. Don't waste money on this show. All other bad reviews are right. Half the theatre left during intermission. This was more like a high school play. Felt bad for some talent on stage.

    A travesty

by Beck on 1/19/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I was so sad to see what was done to this beautiful show! Singing was great, but the weird turns and dark way the story was interpreted were awful. Instead of a beautiful ballet, which the show was known for it was an unusual dance that didn’t really provide what it should have for the show. The “Carrie” like ending was horrible. Don’t go!

    Oh no Oklahoma

by AWW on 1/19/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Poor acoustics in our orchestra seating area. Some voices very disappointing. Did not like the modern dance addition. The dancer was very talented, but did not think it added to this show. Also, did not like the camera close up shots of the actors faces which gave a horror film vibe to the scenes. The small orchestra was very good.

    Oklahoma 2.0

    by S. W. on 1/19/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Very disappointing. I came to the theater to see an American classic and instead it was a show with everything stripped but the songs. I recognized the lyrics but little else. This reimagining emphasizes the darkness and removes the spirit. The musical is gutted of all the fun and leaves a gimmicky mess. Turning the stage dark once is irritating. More than that is an encumbrance on my patience and tolerance. The only good thing I have to say is the cast is great. It’s not their fault they are starring in a fake—the emperor’s new clothes. If we pretend it’s meaningful, maybe no one will notice that it’s not really avant garde. It’s an imposter trying to be clever and failing dismally.

    Everything's up to date...

by williethebard on 1/19/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

So look, if you are going in expecting your grandparents' beloved musical, you may end up leaving a bit of a psychological mess. If you are willing to question the moral judgment of a song like "Poor Jud is Dead," then this might be your show. We thought it was challenging & fabulous.

    Dark/amateur

by Corinnei on 1/19/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I was underwhelmed, an already dark story made darker with odd cinematic effects and unneeded gore. Overall seemed amateur with exception to Ado Annie

Lost us in the second act

by lexie on 1/19/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

My partner and I were in town for the weekend to celebrate a birthday and decided it would be fun to check out Oklahoma! while in town, given that neither of us have ever seen it. When purchasing the tickets, and in the playbill, it does say that it's not exactly like the original. That it's a new take on the musical with more modern touches. Great, no problem. The first act we were definitely interested in. Not sure why "Pore Jud is Daid" is spelled that way in the playbill because it's not spelled that way in the original? But that was just a small oddity. We LOVED Ado Annie and the person that played her. So funny. The second act is where they really lost us. The interpretive dance portion was just plain strange and felt like it went on forever. At one part the dancer (who this is nothing negative on them as I'm sure they didn't come up with the choreography) was scooting around on the ground and I leaned over to my partner to say "it looks like a dog with tapeworm". We thought maybe we just didn't get it until we were walking out of the show and literally everyone else we passed on the way out was talking about how weird that was. It made us laugh.

Give it a Miss. Miss it by the breadth of the sweeping plain

by Nila on 1/18/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I had such high hopes for it and I love the music, but it was, in a word, awful. The voices were poor, weak, inconsistent and frequently just off. The best voices were in minor roles, Ado Annie's father as an example. The worst and weakest thing thing about the original production in the movie version was the dream/dance sequence. It was repeated in this production for no good reason. Worse, it was repeated with a truly talented dancer, but with horrible choreography that added nothing to the story, and music that was so loud as to be painful. It was bad. It was perhaps the worst theater experience ever in my lengthy life, and that includes high school musicals where none of the young people were related to me by blood or marriage. Find something else to do in Chicago.

    Horrid

by Oakie on 1/18/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This reimagined version of Oklahoma was terrible. I expected something resembling the Rogers & Hammerstein musical we all know and love. I’m not sure what this was, but it was so depressing. I’ve never heard such lackluster applause at the curtain call. Even if you paid me to go again, I would not.

    Worth watching

by Craig on 1/18/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

A thought-provoking evening in the theater indeed! I thought the arrangements for the musical numbers to be fairly effective. To me the biggest drawback is that once you subtract this show’s colorful costumes, full orchestration and ballet, etc., you’re left with a show that already felt too long for its subject matter and now seems even longer.

    Beyond terrible

by James on 1/18/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I have enjoyed the arts throughout my life. I myself am a professional performing artist who was inducted into the Fox Valley Performing Arts Hall Of Fame. This Oklahoma presentation (I wouldn't even call it Oklahoma) was the first and only time in my life that I left a broadway play presentation at the intermission. When exiting the door to the street there were hundreds more doing the same. We all looked at each other with the same bewilderment, and in some cases anger, asking each other "what just happened?" To be honest there are yoo many endless complaints to list. I have seen local high school productions of this iconic play, Oklahoma, than what I witnessed last Saturday night. I'm so sorry to have to say that because I have always supported the theatre and have never left such a negative review. The only reason I am now with this Oklahoma presentation is to stop taking the money with the false pretense that this is the magnificent play we love, and certainly not what the genius writers created that won the hearts of theatre goers enjoyed for more 60 years. I'm all for creative change, but not the total castration of an institution and false pretenses. So unbelievably disappointed. Choose another play or you may well be leaving at the intermission like hundreds did with me at Oklahoma.

    Really disappointing

by TAStevens on 1/18/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Not a great show. Very confusing. Lack of creativity in design and plot. Seriously confused on how this show got awards for redo of a classic.
