Tyler Perry on Tour
Say goodbye to America's most malevolent mother. After 10 plays and as many films, Tyler Perry is retiring Madea, his most memorable — and profitable — creation. Introduced in Perry's 1999 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea will meet her end in 2019 during the Madea Farewell Play Tour and latest movie, A Madea Family Funeral.
Before Perry put on his Madea wig, makeup, and fat suit, he was a high school dropout in New Orleans inspired to write by an Oprah Winfrey episode. His 1998 play I Know I Been Changed and its successors became wildly popular on the urban theater circuit. They financed Perry's first film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which he wrote, produced, and starred in. The 2005 release marked the cinematic debut of the intimidating and felonious "Madea" Mabel Simmons, her hapless brother Joe, and his son Brian — all played by Perry.
Madea — her name is the Southern pronunciation of "mother dearest" — is based on Perry's own mother and aunt combined with Eddie Murphy's over-the-top performance in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. The 10 Madea films have grossed more than $500 million at the box office. Perry memorialized Madea's words of wisdom in a 2006 book, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life. (Sample advice: "Too many people want to be friends with their children.")
Not all of Perry's films have been comedies. He adapted Ntozake Shange's acclaimed 1975 theater work as the 2010 film For Colored Girls. In addition to nearly four dozen movies and plays, he has also developed several TV series, including Tyler Perry's House of Payne, The Haves and the Have-Nots, and Love Thy Neighbor. As an actor, Perry plays Admiral Barnett in Star Trek and former Secretary of State Colin Powell in Vice.
While Madea — a character Oprah Winfrey has described as "a compilation of all those strong black women that I know and maybe you do too" — has been the cornerstone of Perry's rewarding career, he doesn't sound completely sorry about seeing her go. As he told radio host Bevy Smith, "I just don't want to be her age, playing her."
The show was hilarious and entertaining from beginning to end. Madea delivered! I have a new found love for Chris Stapleton!
Tyler always have a great story line and brings it back around to your understanding. I only had one problem after leaving the play I went back to the parking area and waited hour to get out. This is the worst part of the event because I brought it through Ticketmaster.
First off, if you don’t know who Tyler Perry is—learn about him! He is a fascinating person who has overcome challenges most would have given into. This man is self made and one of the most successful persons in entertainment. Yet, he has remained humble. Kudos to TP! Next, the play.....absolutely hilarious but I expected nothing less. I have seen most Madea plays and movies and would have seen this again the following night had they been here again. It has quick wit, sentiment and some profound quotes (there is a reason the rearview mirror is smaller than the windshield). We thought the cast’s talent was off the charts. They can SING! But to top it off, Mr. Perry brought Nashville into the play—we thought the country piece was BRILLIANT!!! Mr. Stapleton’s part was the icing on the cake. Like Mr. Perry said, “he is the TRUTH”! A wonderful evening with continuous laughter along with thought provoking sentiments. Kudos to Mr. Perry and his cast! Absolutely beautiful!
The play was great, but, it was not the greatest venue. I thought that I chose good seats for the price, but, the stage still looked like it was a mile away. Also, the stadium seating at Bridgestone Arena is not made for people with long legs. Knees are still aching three days later.
Tyler Perry and the cast did an amazing job. I really enjoyed myself. Bridgestone was a convenient choice. Amazing, just absolutely amazing. Sad it was the last one.
I enjoyed such a great cast for this play. It felt like I was actually apart of the family & Madea always gives the best advice.
OMG! The show was so great. I enjoyed it so much. I loved the whole cast. I’ve been talking about it, telling everyone what they missed.
Was absolutely the best! I would go to this show again in a heartbeat!
It was o e off my bucket list ..amazing time..wonderful show
We flew in from New Orleans for the weekend, and we loved it! Very entertaining! Bam & Mr. Brown had us rolling! We even had a surprise mini performance by Chris Stapleton! Very nice Valentine’s Day date! I cannot say enough about Tyler Perry! 😍
Fantastic music, awesome acting, hilarious lines, and even a few surprises! A must see!
My fiancé and I are both Tennessee natives. We met at our HBCU college and have been together for 5 years. Our first Valentines Day as a couple we went to a Tyler Perry Play. We enjoyed it so much that 5 years later we decided to attend another play this past V-Day. The characters were amazing as always and the singing was phenomenal. They took us to church in many ways than one. Seeing people of all ages, race, and different backgrounds enjoy This monumental moment in history. Madea's Farewell is a MUST SEE. Do not miss out.
Exciting, informative and funny. Great singing and a surprised Chris Stapleton appearance and song...Tennessee Whiskey.
I’ve always wanted to go to a play. So I couldn’t miss this one. It was hands down the best I’ve ever seen and I really hate he is retiring Madea. The play was awesome and i love every second of it
i loved it. it's so funny. and I love madea, Mr Brown and Cora
Tyler always gives us his best and you can really appreciate the life lessons and his positive life points that you can use throughout your path to being a successful person.

But i feel i missed outnon some great photo opps adter spending 600 in the tickets..it would have been nice to have that! They just need to be consistent..
I enjoyed the play...ESPECIALLY THE SINGING. Ti Ti being in the play was a surprise and that was nice. Only thing I do not like is how tight the seating is.
we didn't get in no where to park so we left. It was a big mess. Happy for the ones who made it in and I'm sure had a great time. I gave away over 130.00
