A highbred a Broadway show in us and grateful dead songs is a strange idea to begin with and into it poorly written story about a 1920s coal mine and I was looking at my watch it was missing the whole spirit of the Grateful Dead or dead show. I got the idea that the singers in the band never heard of the grateful dead before they audition for the show

Red Roses Green Gold is a Gem!!

by PartyMarty1005 on 11/13/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I love going to the theatre. It’s a place I can escape the world and be enveloped in a story and enjoy. RRGG is one of those. Taking the words and music of Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and intertwining them to create the background to the story of a con man in the 20’s seemed to fit like a glove! The performers are phenomenal, each richly talented in both acting and music. I danced for most of the show because it made me feel good!!! This is a MUST SEE for Dead Heads and pure entertainment for those who aren’t familiar. DONT DRINK THE KOOL AID!!! LOL!!!

The show was very good. The music was awesome. I personally think that if you do not know the Dead or any of there music you won't appreciate the show as much. We thought it was Rockin and they (the cast) were awesome in covering all the tunes. Thank you to the writer and everyone behind this show to for bringing something to the theater that will make everyone just SMILE! SMILE! SMILE!

    Script???

by Hotglass on 11/10/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Though the girls could sing well, the guys couldn’t. Ruined good Dead tunes. Story was terrible.

    What was that?

by Dyermaker on 11/8/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

This was not good. Singing Grateful Dead songs for no reason, not in any context to what the story was about. Left at intermission. 'Nuf said.

    Enjoy the music

by Zengazenga on 11/5/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

There are a couple of amazing acoustic song versions that are sung beautifully! It was fun to hear old Grateful Songs performed live again. The acting and play plot are weak but it was used to not make show a musical revue so it’s ok

    Excellent on many different levels

by Hobbs12 on 11/2/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

First, I was so impressed that all 8 members could play so many different instrument at the same time as they were moving around, singing and acting out a story. Of course I loved the music which is what brought me there. In addition the set design was so interesting that i was constantly seeing something new to focus on. The story was light but enjoyable which is fine b because it was the overall experience that really was awesome. Second, the cast just seemed so happy and enjoying themselves doing their thing. It was clearly not work for them but a chance to have fun and entertain others. Also the one weirdo actor ( :)) ) with the Afro was having fun engaging the audience members which made it feel inclusive. Bottom line it is a great night of entertainment. Thanks

    Super fun show!

by ZoesFriend on 11/2/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

This is something like a terrific concert with a play going on during it. The performances are absolutely stunning with eight very talented people playing multiple instruments while singing and even dancing. Don't miss this, especially if you are a fan of Grateful Dead music.

    Fabulous trip

by SVGirl on 11/2/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

We enjoyed this play so much. From the talented actors who sang, danced, acted; the “soundtrack” music, costumes, staging. Really, really good. You don’t have to be a Dead fan to enjoy it.

I enjoyed this show, as will most Deadheads. My hope is that Theatre fans who have no real exposure to Hunter/Garcia will enjoy it as well. The talent that this team brings is amazing, keep an eye on these folks. Thank you Jeff Chimenti and crew for a wonderful experience. Break legs.

I have loved the Grateful Dead forever. I disliked this show so much. Although the cast clearly has talent - it felt like the show was something you could have seen in Disney. It is hard to believe that anyone associated with the Band was onboard with this production. Disappointment is an understatement.

Great songs & singers, The story needs some work.

by MusicAddict478353 on 10/24/17Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

This show incorporates some of the best loved songs of the Grateful Dead with an off kilter story about a family of poker playing swindlers who run a saloon in 1920's Cumberland. The best moments come when the emotional maturity of the story matches that of the song and lyric, or when the buoyancy of a song matches the silliness of the story or the action and enthusiasm of the actors/dances/singers. The segment using Brokedown Palace as an example of the former works very well, as does the rollicking Bertha. The story line isn't developed enough to get the audience really invested in the characters, which I think is a problem and needs some further development. Some of the songs seem to just be thrown into the show because they're known to be loved by Dead Heads and great songs, but don't fit into the too slim story line of the show. Touch of Grey at the end, while good fun, is completely superfluous, and more effort should go into putting more emotional detail into the plot. The stage set is a beautiful wood saloon which reminded me of the set of Once The Musical, and the cast is a talented mostly young group who sing dance and play instruments. All in all this is a very enjoyable show. An extra star given for Dead Heads. For the casual listener to Grateful Dead music, this show puts the lovely songs into a unique context that makes them maybe more approachable than might be the case in a concert setting.
