About

ELF The Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner ELF.

The New York Times says that ELF is “SPLASHY, PEPPY, SUGAR-SPRINKLED HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT!” USA Today calls ELF, “ENDEARINGLY GOOFY!” Variety proclaims, “ELF is happy enough for families, savvy enough for city kids and plenty smart for adults!”

Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit, ELF features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

The play was great but the tickets were overpriced.

by Maxi girl on 12/10/22Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts - Moran Theater - Jacksonville

There was a disclaimer that tickets might be higher than face value but almost double is outrageous. When I saw the face value I was stunned. That goes above scalping. Also the theater does not provide handrails in the balcony for every aisle and I list my balance on an uneven step and fell backwards.

    We had a magical night.

by Debbie on 12/9/22Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts - Moran Theater - Jacksonville

Elf was a great show, the true standout to me was the actor who played Buddy the Elf was so true to the character from the motion picture it really brought it to life. My husband and I took my son, daughter in love and 4 year old granddaughter, we all loved it.

    Elf the Musical

by Max on 12/7/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

My husband and I were in from New York to see our daughter, grandson and family. We all went together to see Elf. We absolutely loved it. The little spin Santa did in the beginning with phones and candy, was pretty cute. Actors were all wonderful and scenery was beautiful. Very enjoyable play to kick off the season. Loved it!!

Not the high quality I’ve experienced at DPAC in the past

by Mary on 12/7/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

While the story line is cute and some of the acting was good, it just had an overall feel of a local theater performance. I usually come away from shows with something i can point to that was outstanding: the costumes, the sets, the talent. With this show i didn’t feel any of that was up to the level anticipated.

    Elf Fan

Took my grandkids. Performance was great and funny. I gave it 4 stars because there was profanity used. Not appropriate for a 5 year to say.

    Good but long

by Mom of 3 on 12/7/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

No disrespect to any of the employees or actors. Everyone was very respectful and kind. The actors were very gifted and talented. It was a great performance. The only issue was the length of the performance. The show itself was over two hours long. My kids and I were pretty restless towards the end. If I had known how long the play would be, I would not have purchased tickets. We went to the 7 PM performance. We were not walking out of DPAC until after 10 PM. My other complaint is the merchandise. At previous performances, quality merchandise, while expensive, has been worth it. This merchandise was far from. The snow globe looks like a clown is standing in it, not buddy the elf. And the light up necklace my daughter wanted looked like it cost $.50, not the $20 we were being asked to pay. And it didn’t work. There was only one person working in merchandise. We stood in line for over 50 minutes in total to purchase souvenirs. (30 minutes prior to the show but we had to abandon the line to take our seats as the show was starting. And then the entire 20 minute intermission.) Had I known there were not quality items to purchase, my children and I wouldn’t have wasted our time.

    SO WOKE!!

by Jenperk on 12/7/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Incredibly disappointing. What used to be a kids play, no longer is. We left at intermission!

    Not impressed

by Fishing Dad on 12/7/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Really don't like how characters were changed from the movie, personalities were nothing like the movie. Wish the casts personalities shared more resemblance to what the movie portrayed. And the seats were very uncomfortable.

    Like traditional story better

by Donna on 12/6/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The show was ok the actors and actresses were outstanding as were the sets and the costumes. The elf shoes on the knees was great idea! Don’t appreciate the liberal spin on giving Buddy a love interest and having a baby out of wedlock. Lots of adult humor and some swear words which were unnecessary and inappropriate for an audience that obviously attracts a lot of children. I would have preferred if the writers kept it to the traditional Elf story.

    Concessions need a revamp

by STam on 12/6/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The reason for 4 versus 5 stars is just the concessions. We routinely attend shows at DPAC and the concessions have limited food and always run out. For the volume of people and the level of shows coming through DPAC, the concession stands should be revamped to accommodate many more people in terms of stocking food and a variety of snacks for the performances.

    A fun time for all!

by Craig on 12/5/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Elf the Musical was wonderfully choreographed with excellent singing and great backdrops. The lead characters, particularly the man playing Buddy, were great! And as always, the DPAC is one of the best places to see a show anywhere. Though I am not a huge fan of musicals, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
