About

Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour

The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.

Jesus Christ Superstar Background

Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.

"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."

The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

  • The main female dancer literally gave me chills

by Cindy on 8/31/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This is the seventh time I’ve seen a performance of JCSS. I was disappointed to see that the cast had changed from the touring cast a few years back when I booked my tickets, but it’s my favorite show so I decided to go anyway. I’m so glad I did! It was AMAZING. Every performer was awesome and, while I’ve always loved the lead dancer, this is the first time I’ve ever gotten chills. She was so incredible! I was leaving to go out of the country the next day or I would have gone to see it again. Definitely worth seeing!!

  • Not what we expected

by RiverJay on 5/28/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

We knew this was a rock opera and were familiar with two of the songs. Our seats were center balcony, 2nd row at National Theater in Washington DC. The acoustics were awful. We could not understand the lyrics. Luckily we knew the "story."It seemed as if the singing was all shouting except for the softer songs. The music was far too loud drowning out the shouting singers. We asked others seated in the balcony area and they all agreed it was impossible to figure out the lyrics and that the volume was way too loud. This was $200 and 4 hours we will never get back. I will think long and hard before putting out that kind of money and time for ANY show at the National Theater and I do NOT think that the touring group did justice to the rock opera - AT ALL. I am being generous with a two star review.

  • amazing

Just an amazing experience. From the performance to the story line. I have seen this show before and I know the words to all the songs from my parents playing it way back as a kid but I love the different ending. Well, we all know THE ending but with forgiveness. I always felt Judas was almost "set up"and I always believed that is what happens with Judas' choice but to see it was wonderful. Thank you. Great use of the cross too.

  • 'Meh...

by Bob on 5/23/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

I've been a Jesus Christ Superstar fan since I was a kid (1980s -ish). This version missed every mark. Set was pretty good. The characters seemed like they were all singing solos. Never developed relationships and completely missed the emphasis on major story lines. Jesus and Mary Magdelene seemed like polite acquaintances at best. I guess the blame should fall on the director. I've seen much better versions performed at the community theatre level.

  • Performance Too Loud and Frenetic

by Sally on 5/23/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

I have seen this musical many times and love it. This production was way too loud and frenetic for me. The music overshadowed the lyrics of the songs and the constant movement of the “crowd” was distracting. I did think the staging was very innovative and interesting and the actors were very good.

  • Singing Great, Staging Not So

by DB on 5/23/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The voices were good. However, they should have been dressed in year 33 dress. Also some things were added that made no sense - Jesus and Peter with a guitar? Why?

  • Jack Hopewell

by Susan on 5/22/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Jack Hopewell who played Jesus Christ had a phenomenal voice and range and was a superstar in my opinion.

  • Unusual take on this classic rock opera.

by Ruth on 5/22/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Modernized, interesting staging and costumes. The music was true to the original. The actors who played Judas and Mary Magdalen had excellent voices. The voice of the actor who played Jesus seemed a bit weaker or softer than usual, but that may have been an attempt to make him appear calm and unassuming. The dancers added an interesting flavor, especially the lead woman who opened the show and had several solo parts. Overall, we enjoyed the show very much.

  • Absolutely Awesome

This was so well cast and performed that it’s the best version I’ve seen. Performances were outstanding!
