Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour

The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.

Jesus Christ Superstar Background

Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.

"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."

The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

  • Hopewell is no Ted Neely!

by PK on 5/22/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Even in his finest vocal moment, Hopewell couldn't even come close to sounding better than Neely's worst! It felt like his singing all moved toward trying to pull off Neely's remarkable vocal range. You could feel the strain and inadequacy of the moments where he was shrieking. Judas was brilliant as was Mary Magdalene. I believe Jack Hopewell could have inhabited the role of Jesus and make it uniquely his own. Relying on his own vocal style, inflection and interpretation of the song. All the moving parts of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar have to synchronize with one another for the audience to be appropriately elevated to an enviable spiritual place. Hopewell's limited vocal range inhibited that from occurring. This musical needed to be built around the vocal's and stage presence of Jesus; not simply include Jesus as just another role to be filled.

  • Classic Good Time

by Connie on 5/22/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

So glad I didn't miss this touring production. I love JCS so much and this special anniversary presentation was a welcome steward of the piece. It did it's own thing while upholding some traditional elements that fans expect which is a perfect balance. The choreography in particular was sharp and electric. Solid performances, amazing lighting design, and extra features that really made it special. For instance, turning Judas' hands silver to symbolize his betrayal was a stroke of genius. Absolutely loved it and wouldn't mind owning a proshot. However, it can live rent free in my mind.

Fantastic show! The performers were excellent, as well as the music. It was well orchestrated, and the sound quality was outstanding.

  • Excellent!!!

by Christina on 5/22/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This is my 8th time seeing Hesus Christ Superstar and I loved the costumes and makeup. The choreography was amazing. The best surprise was Jack Hopewell, his portrayal of Jesus was among the best I've seen (I've seen Ted Neeley) but most of all his renditions of Gestheme, which is my favorite song, was the best I have ever seen or heard.

  • Excellent!

I've been a fan since the 70's! Great voices that could hit the high notes!

  • Amazing all around and creative use of space!

by Rick A on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This performance blew my socks off! Seemed to follow the 1970 Original Studio Cast orchestration and civilization - the version I acted out and sang with my siblings through the mid-70s! Imaginative use of a smaller stage with lead musicians in 2 stories of windows! Brilliant! Jesus, Judas, Mary were all powerful, but I’m always taken by the bass notes of Caiaphas, particularly if he can get that low! By Gosh, he got that low! I’d see it again if this traveling show stayed around long enough! Bravo!

  • Great show

An excellent performance by the entire cast - really liked the member of the cast who stood out in all the group events.

  • Always incredible

by 🤘 Livin' Large on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My fourth time in 50 years. Every time is different, and all have been excellent. This contemporary production had strong performances. Mary Magdalene in particular conveyed incredible emotion. A pity DC was the end of the run.

  • Expected More

by RC on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

While I realize that it's impossible to recreate the 1970s version, I was a bit disappointed with the level of talent. It was entertaining but left me a but "blah". While I can appreciate the artistic interpretation of that "tormented"dancer character, it was too distracting. I did enjoy the Pharisees. They were spot on.

  • OUTSTANDING!

by Martha on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This production of JCS was sublime. I have been listening to this rock opera since I was 10 years old. I've seen different performances of it over the years. This production was simply outstanding. The cast, set, choreography, dancers, music, lights, every detail was perfect. I just want to see it again. Luckily I did see this show show twice, once in Washington DC and once in Schenectady NY. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! (I'm thinking I'mma Elvie groupie now, lol.) Excellent job all around. mucho love out.

  • Love this score and the National

by MelTJ on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

A last-minute purchase in Right Mezzanine Row H for 2 PM and pleased. Stage setting made the L-Mezz a better selection. Price was reasonable. Great way to spend a rainy Saturday. My 4th show, last within 8 mos. Touring company production was acceptable. Mary not strongest actor and I have enjoyed a stronger JC. Sadly, the final scene was missing some of its grandeur and feeling. Too rushed. No serious complaints but not a memorable production. Happy for the experience.

  • If I could review a ZERO I would!!

by Not a happy customer. on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The National Theatre has horrific acoustics and all the cast did while singing is yell. Where is the dialogue?

  • Awesome Electrifying Performance!

by Cindy on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar previously at National Theatre and loved it so much we came back. This performance was a completely new perspective on an impactful story! Both renditions were amazing - yet completely different and so original. The passion and energy on the stage was contagious and engaging with the audience. Well done! While all of the performers were unbelievably talented and deserve accolades - Elvie Ellis as Judas was a standout for us. He is a true actor, musician and entertainer! The emotion he delivered brought tears to my eyes. As well as Grant Hodges as Caiaphas. I have recommended the show to others and hope they are able to get tickets and enjoy the musical!

  • Superstar Rocked!

by Geocas on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have been Superstar aficionados for 50 years. We know every note of the score and every word of the libretto, though I favor the movie version to any other. This cast did an awesome job of adapting the existing score to the stage and adding their own flourishes. The actor who played Jesus had the incredible vocal range needed to play the role well. Judas could have added more emotion and expression to his part, but the role is challenging and he did a great job upholding the memory of Carl Anderson as Judas. The cast did a great job with choreography with both modern and traditional dance moves to illustrate the passion of the story. The roles of Pilate and Herod were played with excellent emotion and comic relief. Overall, a wonderful interpretation of a powerful rock opera.

  • An amazing performance

This was a remarkable performance. The costumes, music , choreography and actors were stellar. There was such intense emotion and energy coming off the stage that it brought me to tears. Well done!

  • Not really that great

by PTMWDC on 5/21/24The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

I saw the show Saturday night. I did not love it. Several of the performers were very talented but I thought the staging was strange, there was a lot of distracting modern dance, the music was too loud, and some of the singing was almost shrieking. I love Broadway and revivals, but I would not recommend this one.
