ART GARFUNKEL IN CONCERT:

Art Garfunkel, Grammy-winning songwriter and one-half of the inimitable folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, is fully recovered from a vocal cord injury sustained in 2010 and back on tour. Fans at the singer's 2013 shows were blissfully aware there had even been an issue, as the singer passionately wove his voice through beloved classics like "Sound of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Amid rumors of a new solo album and possible future tour with Paul Simon, Garfunkel will take the stage with more energy and excitement than ever in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Queens, NY, Garfunkel began singing in the first grade, perfecting his technique with a wire recorder given to him by his father. After meeting Paul Simon in 6th grade, the two began  performing together as Tom & Jerry, honing the close vocal harmonies that would mark their later material.  Following a degree in art history from Columbia, Garfunkel once again joined forces with Simon for the duo's 1964 debut album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. The album contained "The Sound of Silence," a sleeper hit that ultimately reached No. 1, foreshadowing the success the duo would achieve with chart-topping albums like 1968's Bookends and 1970's Bridge Over Troubled Water. In the ensuing decades, Garfunkel has continued to record and tour — both solo and with Simon — contributing to one of folk music's most venerable legacies.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Art Garfunkel. That's all I have to say. He has one of the most beautiful and touching voices I have ever heard. After 72 years of life, he's still got it."

" Art Garfunkel was wonderful. It was like he was sitting in my living room. He sounded wonderful and was so open with his thoughts, feelings and his view of life! Don't miss this show!"

"This is the best show I've seen in years. His voice was top-notch, and you can tell he is really on the mend. In fact, you really couldn't tell there had been any issues with his vocal cords."

traffic congestion/well past his prime/he has a book

by Timmy on 9/15/19Brown County Music Center - Nashville

It took too long to enter the grounds. Not enough handicap parking was available. At 77 years of age, Mr. Garfunkel's voice was less than great. He was especially weak at the end of the concert even though he spent a great deal of time reading/reciting in an attempt to promote his book.

    Fabulous Evening with Art!

by Kario on 9/15/19Brown County Music Center - Nashville

New venue, very nice. The wait time to open the doors was too long. There were several older people who really needed a place to sit down. Otherwise, all was fabulous!

Fans forget that our icons age. Appreciate that he wants to feed his desire to keep singing, but his singing ability has faded a lot. He used a lot of time to read segments of his new book that he was promoting. Gave a good show to an appreciative audience who valued his journey.

Sweet evening in a lovely new hall.

by Cecilia on 9/15/19Brown County Music Center - Nashville

Drove from Louisville with friends to see this icon of our youth. Knew in advance it would be a combination of readings and songs. Enjoyed the laid back ambience and sometimes self-deprecating humor, the teasers about Paul Simon and glimpses into a multi-layered life. The singing sometimes soared, sometimes strained, with excellent support from his two piece band. My favorite renditions were Cathy’s Song and Sounds of Silence. Overall, a sweet evening of nostalgia and newness.

Art Garfunkel at the Cabot 7/14/2019

by Betsy on 7/17/19The Cabot - Beverly

Really enjoyed Art Garfunkel’s concert at the Cabot! There was a houseful of true fans which always adds to an event. AG was himself! He sang songs he’s most well known for, which brought the house down, as well as lesser known ones. Brought me right back to many decades ago! I found him genuine and endearing. I especially liked his reminiscing about his long time friend and partner, Paul Simons. His journal reading in between songs added a whole other dimension and added insight into the man. His long time accompanists were very good and perfect for him. Always like being at the Cabot Theater, and even our balcony seats were quite good (better for my shorter legs, than for my husband...). All and all a really enjoyable evening!

    Sounds of Garfunkel

by Newsduck on 7/17/19The Cabot - Beverly

He didn’t look much like the Art Garfunkel I remembered. The halo of frizzy wheat-colored hair was gone, leaving little more than scalp. He walked slowly and carefully. But the voice — ah, the voice. What with his age (he is 77) and past vocal cord problems, that tenor may not have been what it once was but nonetheless was instantly recognizable. He put on a fine show at the Cabot Performing Arts Center in Beverly, interspersing his songs with snippets from his book, which not coincidentally is being released in paperback in a couple of months. I was happy to hear Garfunkel sing the praises of his erstwhile partner Paul Simon and I was happy I got to see Garfunkel in person. I saw Simon years ago and seeing just one of the duo seemed incomplete, like being in a kitchen with a salt shaker but no pepper shaker. Thanks, Art, for all the songs through all the years. Pass the pepper.

    Beautiful venue and easy parking.

by Lisa on 7/17/19The Cabot - Beverly

It’s time for Art to retire. We didn’t recognize him at all when he came on stage. He had difficulty breathing and singing. If I closed my eyes, there were glimpses of the old voice. Art”s reflections this time were reflective of “end of life” times. It was depressing and we left at 1/2 time which was only 35 minutes for the first half.

The sound was great. The songs & poetry readings were wonderful. My daughter, who is in her 30s, said it was really cool to hear “The Sound of Silence” sung live by Art Garfunkel. I totally agree!!

Art was incredible as I had expected.

by Sandi on 6/23/19Coronado Performing Arts Center - Rockford

He's low key, just him and an incredible guitarist and keyboardist, but sang all his hits, thanking Simon for writing them. Loved the show!

Beautiful Icon Evening - But He is Struggling

by K. B. on 6/5/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I loved the poetry and the stories that Art Garfunkel told at his concert. A couple of issues are that he cannot hit most of his high notes and I felt sorry for him straining so hard to do so. The other thing was that the concert was short. Only about 1 1/2 hours - a lot of money for not a lot of time. All that being said he was super sweet and his son and he worked well together. His guitar player was excellent.

    Inspiring

by Boomer on 6/4/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Art no longer has the powerful voice with the perfect pitch that he had when I saw him in 1974. He makes up for the imperfections with the wisdom of age and a greater appreciation of life and of his audience. He established a very warm connection with the crowd the entire evening and seemed to genuinely enjoy performing. The concert was like a journey through his life that parallels most of us near his age. Although I have heard the lyrics a thousand times, they had more meaning within the context of a live performance. The addition of his son was a highlight with his wonderful angelic voice which was such a complement to his father's voice on the duets. An album of those two with duets would be so wonderful!!. The two gentlemen accompanying Art on the keyboards and guitar were fabulous. It was so nice to return to a time when singers could sing and music had melody and meaning.
