Arizona Coyotes History

Before they were the Arizona Coyotes, this franchise — a founding member of the World Hockey Association — was originally based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and began playing in 1972 as the Jets. The early team made headlines before the season even started after signing hockey star Bobby Hull from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Jets went on to be one of the best teams in the league, winning three titles from 1976 to 1979.

The WHA merged with the NHL before the 1979-1980 season, but the Jets were unable to maintain their dominance and the franchise was relocated to Arizona before the 1996-1997 season; they became known as the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes subsequently qualified for the postseason in each of their first four seasons and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky became a minority owner of the team in 2000 and their head coach in 2005.

After filing bankruptcy in 2009, the team was later purchased by the NHL. Despite the tumultuous seasons, the Coyotes won 50 games during the 2009-2010 season. In the 2011-2012 season, they won their first division title in franchise history. In 2013, the NHL sold the team and its name was changed to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014. Since 1997, the Coyotes have made it to the playoffs a total of nine times.

    Go Howling!!!

by MayhemfestFan on 10/12/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Loved the game, even though the Coyotes lost it was a great time. Nice to see the arena full again. Entertainment in between the periods was lacking but other than that all was fun.

    Coyotes vs Blue Jackets

by DJohns on 10/12/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

The Coyotes were not given a valid goal which was not clearly described why. And what happened at the end when everyone left the ice and the Blue Jackets put the puck into the goal and nobody was around but they got the point. Seemed like it was just a game of show for the "white out" crowd to see, is all.

the game was great except for the goal that was taken away in the 2nd period of play! good job refs! please make sure that you can see before you pass the teat to make calls! our sets were right above the goal and we all saw it go in the lights even went off. how is that not a goal?

    The Whiteout was waaaaa Cool!!!

    by Doanerfan1 on 10/12/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

We thought the Whiteout Sat. night was Fun!!! The Coyotes lost 2-0 against the Bluejackets. But they seemed to play with alot more strength and speed this year. We know that its just the start of the season with 78 more games to play. We just need to keep supporting our YOTES!!

Just a whole lot of fun for the kids and adults

by teapotjr on 10/12/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Except for the fact that the COYOTES forgot that there must be offense to go along with their really fine defense it was a fun evening. Management needs to evaluate there product and the cost in todays economy. Check NASCAR . They have reduced ticket prices and are filling the stands back up. Last night was a great example of that for the COYOTES. Those that can afford the "Regular" prices are few and far between right now. Take those $35 & $55 tickets and drop them to $15 & $25 and watch the seats fill up. Needless to say the profit line will increase also.

    Coyotes Offense Was Missing

by ASadFan on 10/12/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

With Great Expectation my wife and I went to see the Phoenix Coyotes play their home opener... The game was great but they were punchless... The Coyotes had many, many chances to score but lacked the "killer instinct". It will be awhile before we go back.

    by Srt4Life on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

The White Out Opening game was awsome. It was my first NHL game and I can't wait to go again. The Coyotes really care about their fans and that means a lot.

    Hockey is back

by HockeySvatos on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

The game was a lot of fun, however it would have been much better if the Coyotes had won...it was way better than previous years...it felt much more like hockey, no cheerleaders, no lame kids stuff that has nothing to do with the sport, it was old hockey. now we just need the pregame volume to be turned up.

    Coyotes vs. Blue Jackets

by anotherbadgame on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

I have to start that having to deal with politics of the job in my business can take a toll on you. So with that said I understand if the guys are feeling that. The game itself being a white out was great and I love the new shirt; thank you. A few times I feel the Coyotes got robbed on my bad calls and no calls, but thats probably every game. My most disappointment though is that they're shooting sucked! Especially when they had the advantage with the power plays, most notably when Columbus had two in the box and the Coyotes had full strength. To much passing not enough shots on goal.

    Game was awesome

by Therepairman on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

This was the first time we purchased seats in the upper level. We had a excellent view of the whole game. We still like being up against the glass, but the upper seats are worth the price.

Only thing missing was a Coyote win!

    by Ducks54 on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

I've been to this venue before, but with pit tickets to a concert. It's a clean, modern, AWESOME place for a hockey game. Lots of seat room, well-configured cup holders (if you've been to a Ponda hockey game, you'd know this actually makes a difference), good views from my seat. The only thing that would have made this event better would have been a win from the team I was rooting for! Would definite come here for a hockey game or a concert again.

    Whiteout Was Fantastic

by PaloVerde on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

With the exception of three times that the Yotes had the advantage and failed to come through this game was an exceptional demonstration of defense and offense. The boys played hard for us. They so much wanted to make Phoenix proud and build the fan base so they can stay in Phoenix. The game was very physical and tempers did flare numerous times. But being mature players, the Yotes did not take it too far. The Officials were right there on top of things and worked with the boys to cool off and continue playing.

    Whiteout was amazing!!! :)

by shannonb on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Coming from Canada we are hockey fans!! :) The whiteout was soooo much fun! It brought back many memories of when we were still living in Manitoba and we used to do the whiteouts for the WInnipeg Jets!!! It was wonderful to see so many people participating. Even though the Coyotes didn't win this game...they played really well...........it was simply that "Garon" (the goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets) was outstanding. I do beleive that the Coyotes have a chance this year and i wish that we could get get tickets to games at $20 a piece all the time. It would make it much more reasonable......and we would definately attend more games. We had a great time, and i must say that the White OUt HOme Opener was a nite to remember!! :)

    Jobbing.com was made for hockey!

    by Coyote65 on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Being a student, I can't afford as much hockey as I would like. Ticketmaster and the Coyotes gave us a chance to see the opening night within our budget. The upper deck seats were GREAT! you can see everything, all of the time. The online purchase and instant print of the tickets was extremely easy and convenient. I plan to use Ticketmaster much more often!
