ANIMALS AS LEADERS IN CONCERT:
Apex predators Animals as Leaders represent the next evolution in progressive metal with their bone crushing power, lightning speed, and mind-blowing creativity. In concert, Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes both play massive 8-string guitars that allow them to hold down crushing bass lines and soaring leads simultaneously. Reyes tends to handle more of the low-end duties while Abasi shreds furiously over the top, a master of both syncopated complexity and direct melodicism. Drummer Matt Garstka pounds out massive rhythms, fluid transitions, and furious fills to keep ticket buyers’ heads banging throughout AAL’s epic sets. Fresh off the 2014 release of The Joy of Motion and touring with the likes of Between the Buried and Me and The Contortionist, Animals as Leaders are continuing their climb up the heavy metal food chain.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Animals as Leaders formed in Washington, D.C. in 2007 when Tosin Abasi left his previous band Reflux. Prosthetic Records noticed his prodigious talent and offered to produce an instrumental album of his guitar work. Instead of taking the generous offer, he opted to hone his skills at the Atlanta Institute of Music, which took his playing to staggering new heights. He recorded Animals as Leaders’ self-titled debut in 2009, immediately attracting attention in guitar circles due to his unprecedented and unconventional gift for rhythm, melody, and harmony. Abasi found a talented guitar foil in Javier Reyes, who joined AAL in 2009 to ease the transition from recording project to touring band. Drummer Matt Garstka solidified their lineup in time for their 2012 tour schedule and held down the drums for the group’s critically praised third album The Joy of Motion (2014).
It was one of the best shows I have ever seen live. Thank you AAL for putting on a perfect show
While I could tell the band was spot on, the sound was less than stellar. It seemed as though the kick drum on all the bands was drowning out any low end from the other instruments. You couldn't here any bass or clarity of low end guitar at all from the balcony. This should have been in a venue of this size. The stage was only about twenty yards away, so those kick drums from both Contortionist and AAL just rang out like a recording room with no bass baffles to minimize low end frequency ring. When AAL came on there was no distinction of the guitars at all, making the complexity of their music sound inaudible. Most of the time I could barely tell what song they were playing. I'm glad the tickets were only 35 bucks each.
Animals as Leaders is absolutely outstanding live. As complicated and intricate as their music is recorded, they don't miss a beat in concert. This is the second time I've seen them, the first time being at The Wiltern, also in Los Angeles. The show at The Wiltern absolutely blew me away because the sound system allowed everything to come through to show the talent of the band. Unfortunately, the Mayan didn't do that. It just wasn't clear enough to really enjoy every note and drum line that these guys have worked so hard to create beautiful music with. Regarding the band itself, they are amazing and well worth seeing. Don't let the venue take away from their talents and performing ability.
Being 100% honest, I was only there to see Periphery, but Astronoid was pretty solid, the vocals weren't my favorite. Animals as Leaders was impressive with their technical prowess, but I didn't know any pf the songs, so they were a little difficult to get into - props to the guy sitting next to me nodding completely out of time with AAL lol
I really enjoyed seeing Animals As Leaders and Periphery. I came mostly for the latter but was pretty blown away by the former. Great musicianship! I would totally see them again, especially to share the experience with someone new :)
Amazing show!!! I waited so long for this show!! Nice sound!!! Beautiful lighting!!! Was worth it!!!!
The level of technical proficiency is astounding. Everything from the lights to the pit were on point.
Animals as Leaders have truly mastered their art. From their talented playing abilities to their stage presence, they really know how to put on a good show. The mix was spot on (a little too bassy for the other bands) and the light show was really great as well. I have zero complaints about this show or the venue!
A truly impressive concert. The opening bands, Chon and Conquering Dystopia, were a great start. Animals as Leaders themselves performed even better then in their recordings.
Opening acts: Chon, Conquering Dystopia. Chon was kind of boring, they kind of seem like and come off as a high school garage band. Their drummer does not fit their playing at all. Conquering Dystopia was a huge let down. The mix was completely off. Jeff Loomis's guitar playing could not be heard over the bass guitar and bass drum. Animals as Leaders sound great live, their mix was spot on along with their playing. I was hugely disappointed by the Culture Room. They sold too many tickets, to the point where it was so crowded that it was impossible to move. The stage is also TINY.
Been to three of their shows now and can't wait for the fourth one to happen. Always an amazing night when they are playing. Absolutely awesome!
Amazing concert, I didn't expect Conquering Dystopia so it was a great surprise for me. The only bad thing is that the place was too crowded so everyone was very tight and it suffocated my girlfriend, but besides that it was amazing.
All 4 acts were entertaining; really enjoyed the event. Animals as Leaders played a number of new songs from the upcoming album; good stuff.
I became a AaL fan over a year ago after stumbling on them on youtube. I had never heard anything like it before. Since then I have gotten into many other instrumental progressive bands. Anyway, I tried to listen to all four bands (Chon, Navene K, After the Burial, AaL) to enhance the experience. I'm glad I did. They were all great. Chon was fantastic and I would go see them again. Animals were amazing. They sound exactly like they do on record which is impressive considering how technical their music is. I would def recommend seeing them.
All 3 members of Animals as Leaders have jaw dropping talent.
Witnessed an unforgetable evening with Animals as Leaders (AaL) this past Tuesday 2/25/14 at the Masquerade here in Atlanta. Lead guitarist Tosi Abasi (sp?) could very-well be the next Hendrix, Van Halen, Vai. This guy had shedding chops AND, more-importantly, great compositional skills (a real rarity among most shredders). I was VERY impressed at the quantity of attendees for an instrumental metal band on a tuesday night. These guys have a strong following (including myself). Strongly recommend you check them out. (The drummer too is a monster)
I admit this is not my normal type of music I listen to but I enjoyed the whole concert very much. The atmosphere was entertaining at times with the "mosh-pits" but it was very lively. Enjoyed it a lot. Great music.
I really enjoyed this event at the Beaumont Club, it was not too big and over crowed, so I felt like the bands gave the crowd personal attention. Tosin Abasi was amazing as ever, and even got a chance to meet and talk with him after the show. He is such a modest and nice guy who just has a deep passion for music. The opening bands were ok, but I wish the opening bands were more of Animals as Leaders style...but I realize that such a request is difficult and that most all the bands that played were under the same record label...Overall, great time, exceeded my expectations. Hope Animals as Leaders comes back to KC some time, haha P.S. Bring TRAM, Chimp Spanner, and Periphery with you ;D for opening bands haha
All bands were unique by far. But Animals As Leaders shall soon be known around the globe.
Even though their album is awesome, they're even better live. A very high energy, intense, and awesome show.
