ANIMALS AS LEADERS IN CONCERT:

Apex predators Animals as Leaders represent the next evolution in progressive metal with their bone crushing power, lightning speed, and mind-blowing creativity. In concert, Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes both play massive 8-string guitars that allow them to hold down crushing bass lines and soaring leads simultaneously. Reyes tends to handle more of the low-end duties while Abasi shreds furiously over the top, a master of both syncopated complexity and direct melodicism. Drummer Matt Garstka pounds out massive rhythms, fluid transitions, and furious fills to keep ticket buyers’ heads banging throughout AAL’s epic sets. Fresh off the 2014 release of The Joy of Motion and touring with the likes of Between the Buried and Me and The Contortionist, Animals as Leaders are continuing their climb up the heavy metal food chain.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Animals as Leaders formed in Washington, D.C. in 2007 when Tosin Abasi left his previous band Reflux. Prosthetic Records noticed his prodigious talent and offered to produce an instrumental album of his guitar work. Instead of taking the generous offer, he opted to hone his skills at the Atlanta Institute of Music, which took his playing to staggering new heights. He recorded Animals as Leaders’ self-titled debut in 2009, immediately attracting attention in guitar circles due to his unprecedented and unconventional gift for rhythm, melody, and harmony. Abasi found a talented guitar foil in Javier Reyes, who joined AAL in 2009 to ease the transition from recording project to touring band. Drummer Matt Garstka solidified their lineup in time for their 2012 tour schedule and held down the drums for the group’s critically praised third album The Joy of Motion (2014).

Go see them if you have the chance

by The Famous Mr. Ed on 4/21/22Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

I have wanted to see these guys live ever since I first heard them, just to see if they were real. They are. Phenomenal performance from three people (extra-terrestrial life forms???) who sound like they were meant to be in a band together. The opening act (Intervals) was very impressive as well; good pairing. I was in the balcony, so I didn't get the "floor" experience, which at my age is probably not a bad thing. The audience was very into the band; lots of crowd swimming and such. I couldn't help but notice that most of the lighting was coming from the stage & not so much directed at the stage, no spotlights, which I guess I would have to expect from performers who seem so humble. A wonderful way to get back out into the concert life.

Greatest concert I've ever been to

by Kevin on 4/20/22House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

The concert was absolutely amazing, both AAL and Intervals were great, but the drums were louder than the guitars unfortunately. Still a great show tho. These guys are amazing musicians.

    Still Amazing

by Ken on 4/19/22House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

Animals came back after the crazy-world hiatus with full force. Their musicianship has not diminished in the slightest, and they performed amazingly. Crowd was loving it, we (gf and I) were loving it. Captivating and skilled, they continue to push thought-provoking technical music that inspires and is performed as flawlessly live as it is recorded. Was a great time and I hope to see them again in the future.

    Absolutely Amazing

by Paul on 4/19/22House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

Concert venue, lighting, and overall atmosphere was incredible. The music was on a different level listening to both Intervals and Animals as Leaders live! Definitely recommend anyone who enjoys instrumental music to listen to them both. Haven't been to a concert in years and this was a perfect re-entry.

The atmosphere was absolutely wonderful, and the staff were nice. There where no problems entering the venue, and once the show started I couldn’t think of anything but the performance. Loving seeing Animals as Leaders live, and I’ll definitely do it again!

    Simply Awesome

by Storm on 4/18/22Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

This show was amazing. I've seen Animals as leaders live before at NAMM 2020, and they were incredible. This time for some reason they sounded even better than before. Intervals opened for them and they were magnificent! The crowd was electric, the music shook you to the core. If you've never been to a animals as leaders show before... You owe it to yourself to go!

Incredible music, venue was way too fancy and annoying

by Spano on 4/15/22Big Night Live - Boston

Animals as Leaders was absolutely mind blowing. I didn't think my appreciation for this group could grow, but seeing them live was truly spiritual. The venue was pretty annoying though. Fancy club, made me check my hip pack at the door and I don't have pockets. I would have much rather smooshed into the Middle East.

One of the most talented musicians of modern metal.

by Charly on 4/13/22Irving Plaza - New York

Never a disappointing experience with AAL. Watching these guys play some of the most complicated riffs with such precision puts you in a trance and leaves you in awe. It will be very rare for me to miss any live performances from them in the future.

    Best show I’ve ever seen

    by S. S. on 4/11/22Wally's - Hampton

I’ve seen Animals as Leaders around 8 times over the past 10 years. This was by far the best show I’ve seen mostly due to the venue. It was a small bar probably only a couple hundred people. The sound was great the show was great. I can’t recommend the band or the venue enough.

Great, great show. Intervals was a fabulous opener. AAL put on an incredible concert, and seeing them at the Crofoot was like inviting them into your living room. The sound system and acoustics are exceptional. Perfect way to spend an evening.

    Absolutely phenomenal, as always

by Ian on 4/8/22Bogart's - Cincinnati

Fantastic show. AAL was as incredible live as they always are. Bogart's is a great, spacious, well-mixed venue. Intervals also kicked ass as the opener.

    Animals, even more epic, live

by Animals Fan on 4/2/22Summit - Denver

Rejuvenating show, full house, great crowd. Intervals opened with fun, heart thumping energy. Animal's signature rhythmic and harmonic complexities are even more epic, live. Keep innovating, you're truly evolving the best creations of humanity. Denver loves you! Best for happy touring, and please return soon.

    Better than I hoped

by NadesNBlades on 4/2/22Summit - Denver

Both bands were fantastic. It was first time seeing them and my first time at Summit. I was very hype for Animals as Leaders and they did not disappoint. In fact they exceeded my hopes! We got swept up in the pit but everyone was chill and we just flowed back until we were out. Would highly recommend and am eyeing tickets for them supporting Incubus at Red Rocks in the Fall.
