About

Animal Collective's founding members, Avey Tare and Panda Bear, began their musical collaboration in 2000 with the release of the folk-meets-electronica album Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. Adding two new band members to the roster—Geologist and Deaken—the band's music moved into more experimental territory on their second release, Danse Manatee, an album full of electronic bleeps, cymbal crashes and otherworldly vocals. 2003 saw the release of the lo-fi folk album Campfire Songs as well as the psychedelic rock album Here Comes the Indian. The group's most accessible release to date, Sung Tongs, appeared in 2004, receiving enthusiastic praise from fans and critics alike. The group kept busy in 2005, releasing an EP, Prospect Hummer, in collaboration with the singer Vashti Bunyan and a new full-length, Feels.

I was really excited to see them. I have 2.5 of their 5 albums, so I did not know everything they played, but neither did a lot of the diehards that were around me. If that was all new stuff, then I'm afraid they may have lost their amazing edge. Even the four songs I knew were not as good live as they are on the albums.

    Not the same

    meh

Animal collective makes great songs, but do not go see them live if you want to hear songs. Go see them live if you want to hear sounds for acid heads, they have basically become an electronic jam band and the show was crazy boring.

by Matthoppen on 7/14/11Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

    SOOOO disappointing

by ajringer on 7/14/11Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

I still respect animal collective...the problem is, they don't respect us. They didn't give the audience some of the simple pleasure we needed at the end of a day, outdoors, in Prospect Park. Grow up guys! We know you are complicated....now it's time to be real showmen.

    Great.

by RachelRachelRachel on 7/14/11Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

The venue was great, as usual -- wonderful lights, sound, staff, security. Everything very easy going and lots of dancing. And the band! Played lots of promising new stuff, but went on a little late and, in my opinion, didn't play for long enough. Overall, though, a fantastic night!

    very disappointed!!!

by SteveAveX on 7/14/11prospect park bandshell - brooklyn

i was looking foward to this event for a while, but was very disappointed with it. i saw them at Terminal 5 in nyc and didnt know much about them; i was hooked! very imaginative and extremely talented guys, the place had so much energy; but not at prospect park, they are obviously going in a different direction with their sound. the crowd was dead except for the few older songs that i remembered from previous show, more up-beat, fun sound. hopefully they realize this... it was right in front of them to see. i wish i could've written a better review.

i went into the show really excited to hear some sungtongs/feels (or any other) throwbacks and didnt really hear any. they played all new stuff minus a couple merriweather songs and the crowd just wasnt feeling it. prospect park is a fun venue though.

It was Animal Collective outdoors on a beautiful summer night. What could possibly be bad?

While the opener was forgettable and at times a bit annoying, Animal Collective was wild. The stage was beautifully done with interesting decorations and a skull backdrop that lit up and changed throughout the evening. We heard a lot of new music and even the older songs that they played had twists in them which made each song new.

Despite the heat, this was still a fun show. I wish they had played more songs from their past albums! They didn't even play "My Girls," which was really surprising. It would have been nice to have more upbeat songs in the set list because listening to slow songs in the heat made me want to fall asleep.

    Great Show

by beacoupfish on 7/13/11Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

Awesome setlist, really cool crowd and lax venue. Only complaint I have is that the acoustics weren't the greatest here but I am pretty sure if you were up close it would be better. A lot of new music and it was some awesome stuff...specifically some of the stuff Panda Bear played was just experimental progressive electronic dance rock and it really hits the mark.

    AnCo

by Anonymous on 7/13/11Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

Everything was absolutely wonderful, except for the length. I've never been more upset over a show ending than this one. I traveled 6 hours to Atlanta and was hoping for this grandiose display of awesome. I got a great performance, but I wish the boys had worked up the audience. They didn't even speak to us till the very end, it's almost like they didn't want to be there.

I'd rather forget this lackluster performance

by Irishnation on 7/11/11Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

I've been to 4 shows at the Verizon, counting this one, and I have to say that by far, this one was the worst. The attendance was low, they filled up only half of the pit. The staff seemed unwelcoming. But all of this would have been moot, had AnCo put on a somewhat decent show--to be blunt, their performance was devoid of any sort of redemptive energy, really any energy at all. They played mostly new stuff, with maybe 2 tracks from Merriweather Post Pavilion and none from Strawberry Jam...essential AnCo, if you ask me. The crowd, mostly "too-cool-for-school" hipsters, barely nodded their heads to the lulling discord that emanated from the speakers. I didn't even feel that the band was into it About halfway through the performance I started to wonder why I had come in the first place. It felt odd and dis-genuine to be there. Don't get me wrong, I love AnCo--always will-- maybe I just don't love them live.

by Tva44 on 7/11/11Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

Great show. The stage set up was amazing and they played flawlessly. I am surprised how low the turnout was. They must have lost a fortune on this show!!!

This was a beautiful show with the most prestine sound quality i've ever heard.
