About

Animal Collective's founding members, Avey Tare and Panda Bear, began their musical collaboration in 2000 with the release of the folk-meets-electronica album Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. Adding two new band members to the roster—Geologist and Deaken—the band's music moved into more experimental territory on their second release, Danse Manatee, an album full of electronic bleeps, cymbal crashes and otherworldly vocals. 2003 saw the release of the lo-fi folk album Campfire Songs as well as the psychedelic rock album Here Comes the Indian. The group's most accessible release to date, Sung Tongs, appeared in 2004, receiving enthusiastic praise from fans and critics alike. The group kept busy in 2005, releasing an EP, Prospect Hummer, in collaboration with the singer Vashti Bunyan and a new full-length, Feels.

  • If you are fan you will lose it

I am a huge 10+ year fan of AC and the same cycle seems to happen over and over...new album comes out, sounds "okay," then they tour it and mix it in with select older material and it really comes alive. The visuals and stage design for this tour are the best yet and they have really perfected the "flow" of their live set. This was not the best show I've seen by them but they only seem to tour on the album cycle so if you don't wanna wait 2+ years to see them again and you are a real fun (i.e. don't just know MPP) then you will enjoy it.

I was extremely excited to be seeing this band for the first time. It wasn't bad but I was expecting a lot more from what I've heard about their live shows. I was disappointed they only played 3 or 4 songs that weren't on their new album. Their transitions between songs were "playful" I guess but sometimes they felt like they dragged on with little progression (time they could have spent playing older songs that people probably really wanted to hear). I also don't think they were loud enough or mixed well enough. Their music is usually very dense and at the show it was hard to discern parts from each other. Their live drummer was not the best and actually messed up once or twice. A few of the songs (especially Golden Gals) would have been a LOT better (and more danceable) with more snare rather than edge hits but I guess he wanted to play them how they were written. Overall it was kind of disappointing but still cool to see one of my favorite bands live. Perhaps when they aren't touring for this album it will be a lot better.

  • Not worth it.

by Lakesz on 4/4/14Royal Oak Music Theater - DetroitRating: 1 out of 5

After cancelling their original show date in July 2013, AnCo finally returned in November (maybe it was Decmember?) and I was extremely excited. My friends and I were a little early so we made it to the front, but more toward the speakers on the left in front of Avey. The band members looked extremely lethargic and had little to no energy. At one small dance move the crowd would go crazy, because any slight movement was better than them standing there looking bored. I love AnCo, and to see them seem so down about performing was off-putting. About the music... The whole set seemed like one song. Very repetetive, songs couldn't be differentiated from the previous one. The bass overruled the instruments and singing, which isn't a huge deal usually, but this was remarkably annoying. The bass was so obnoxious that people were actually covering their ears, and I have minor (but permanent) hearing damage in my left ear. When people ask, "Was it worth it?" I wish so much that I could say yes. But it just wasn't. Such a sloppy, and overall bad show. I tried so hard to enjoy it. Bottom line: Don't see them live. If you do, I REALLY hope your experience is better than mine. Maybe they just had a bad day? :x

It took too many songs before the fire lit, but when they lit, people were crazy and it was just good.

Animal Collective was on point, both nights. The music was amazing which is all that matters. The crowd should learn to dance and any of you wallflowers who stood there doing nothing need to get some pep in your step, the music was incredible. the set was also amazingly designed and constructed. my only real qualm was the same setlist was played both nights, i didnt pay for both nights to see the same show. but regardless, a good time.

  • One of the Best Shows I've Seen!!

    by Anonymous on 12/8/12Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Animal Collective was amazing! The lights, the Holograms, their trippy stage setup...all amazing! They controlled the crowd very well, moving them to go crazy and dance and also winding them down at beautiful slow moments. The setlist was amazing, they played their new album and also some old hits...I absolutely fell in love with every song, and overall i'm just SOOOOO happy I got to see them and they did not disappoint!
