About

Animal Collective's founding members, Avey Tare and Panda Bear, began their musical collaboration in 2000 with the release of the folk-meets-electronica album Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. Adding two new band members to the roster—Geologist and Deaken—the band's music moved into more experimental territory on their second release, Danse Manatee, an album full of electronic bleeps, cymbal crashes and otherworldly vocals. 2003 saw the release of the lo-fi folk album Campfire Songs as well as the psychedelic rock album Here Comes the Indian. The group's most accessible release to date, Sung Tongs, appeared in 2004, receiving enthusiastic praise from fans and critics alike. The group kept busy in 2005, releasing an EP, Prospect Hummer, in collaboration with the singer Vashti Bunyan and a new full-length, Feels.

    Animal Collective was Almost Perfect

by FeloniousBolus on 8/1/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

Everything about this show was great: the band, the opener, the location and people. The one thing that ended up bringing this show down from perfection was the lack of air conditioning in the venue. If you’re visiting the Moore Theater make sure to buy a water, wear shorts, and bring a hand fan. Other than that, amazing time.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOAH

by Thegirlwthebeanie on 7/20/18Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

For one, this album is 14 years old. Why they’re touring it now, I don’t know, but I couldn’t be happier because it’s my favorite by them. I watched the pitchfork performance about 20 times prior to this to be “prepared” and while I knew some of the extra bits they did, like covered in frogs, they also did pilot and a newbie that Avey wrote AND learning how to drive. One of my favorite songs they did was “happy birthday” to embarrass Noah- so happy to have been there for that. And not JUST that but I got to tell the guy in person after the show. Had to pay a security guy to find the tour bus location but wow, so worth it. Noah (Panda Bear) is such a chill down-to-earth dude and I’ve heard about him being shy for meet & greets or whatever but it felt like we were a group of a few buddies shooting the breeze. He even signed my copy of sung tongs and person pitch on vinyl, my boyfriends t-shirt, and we got pictures! (Attached) As always, blown away by you guys. Hands down would’ve flown to New York to see the show again two days later if I had the funds.

    AnCo chills AND thrills

by Mtich on 10/10/17The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

I had seen Animal Collective once prior in St. Louis, MO, USA during their Centipede HZ tour and didn't think they'd be able to top that performance but boy did they prove me wrong. Though it was just the trio performing this time they somehow managed to put on a more energetic and inspiring act than with the whole quartet. Four thumbs up from my wife and I!

    Animals at Terminal 5

by FayWang on 11/6/16Terminal 5 - New York

The band was an electronic music band, not much presence. Sound quality at Terminal 5 is terrible, it's very loud but not clear, music sounds really noisy.

Always great, but could have been better

by SamiDK on 11/5/16Terminal 5 - New York

Animal collective is always amazing. They are even better live than recorded. I just wish they would have played more old stuff. It was pretty much just new album. And none of the slower songs, like bluish, were played.

    Average at best

    by Mace14059271 on 10/12/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Venue layout, vulfpeck, and Mac demarco were the only redeeming factors. Door bouncers were unprofessional, concert lineup was behind schedule, overall the concert was very try hard

Fantastic show. Sound and lights were spectacular! A lot of extensive jamming and cohesion between songs - it seemed like the guys never stopped playing!

Animal Collective at the top of their game

    by Mudfish55 on 5/10/16Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

Excellent show. Not your father's animal collective. They have refurbished the show to focus on the new disc with a smattering of much older tracks and a Motown cover. The light show was a typically fantastic presentation. Worth seeing if you love AC.

    Mindblowing show!

    by ToeTapper33 on 5/10/16Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

This is my second Animal Collective concert. I didn't think it was possible but... my experience was even more incredible this time. Their sounds are transporting and their graphics and light show were even more so. You must see them!!

    Little anemic

by TwelveDog on 5/6/16The Pageant - St Louis

It was quite a short concert...they seemed maybe a little tired. Very happy to see us and grateful we were there but maybe a touch off. Still worth seeing though.

    Cool theatre, great band.

by Talbet on 3/12/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

It's my favorite band and "painting with" is on a constant loop at home and in the car, so instead of hearing it at home or in the car, there they are up there performing it live. And it was amazing. The light/stage show was very cool looking, and reflected the cartoonish vibe of the new record. Their music is so busy that it keeps my brain occupied and entertained. The visual was all that times infinity. It rocked.

The Fox Theatre is one of my favorite concert venues. Animal Collective's performance was awesome!! The sound was perfect and their stage designs/presentation was great and super psychedelic. I love AC and was happy to experience their show at Fox Oakland.

    Underwhelming

by Anonymous on 3/10/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I've been following Animal Collective for years but haven't been to their shows before. I guess I expected more action and onstage antics from this one. Maybe some happened but I sat too far from the stage to see it. There was next to zero interaction with the audience. Given the electronic character of the music, one might say Animal Collective went for a Kraftwerk-like stage setup, with each member (not counting the drummer) standing at his own pulpit - for KW this helps bear out the robotic themes of their music, for AC it just looks boring. The sound was okay. I'm giving it an overall 3 stars because I don't want to be too critical of the band; it's probably just a terrible mismatch of band and venue. Their shows need to happen in large caves where mutant bats hang from the ceiling and the ground is carpeted with LEDs and stuffed animals. Fox Theater ain't that.

    Incredible show and experience!

by Manak on 3/10/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

This was my third time seeing Animal Collective, and I can honestly say each show has been completely different than the one that preceded it. To me, that speaks to not only their versatility as a band, but also to their constant shape shifting and relentless innovation in their music. They opened with an extended version of "Natural Selection," quickly setting the stage for the rest of the night. Mesmerizing and hypnotic, Noah's vocal performance was nothing short of exceptional, and his emotional delivery resonated throughout the entire theater. More highlights: -A brilliant rendition of "Daily Routine" that seemed to materialize out of nowhere, only to transform majestically in its operatic second half. -"Summing the Wretch" is a dynamic and powerful live song, and should be a staple of their shows for the next year or so. "Lying in the Grass" belongs in this category too, fantastic live song and they absolutely nailed the alternating vocals. -A completely unexpected performance of "Alvin Row," a song from one of their earliest albums. The live version of this song was a revelation, and I may never hear anything like it ever again. Worth the price of admission alone. -And then of course, "The Burgalars" got everyone dancing as they closed their set, and then came back with an encore that included a deconstructed version of one of my personal favorites "Loch Raven." Overall, it was a wonderful and inspiring show. Highly recommended to anyone looking to open their mind and experience something different.
