About

Anderson .Paak in Concert

Presenting the artist in a top hat and plaid boxer shorts as he plays piano in the surf amid a smattering of objects like an old-school record player, the surreal cover image for Anderson .Paak's breakthrough album perfectly suited its wildly inventive contents. Full of witty, unpredictable songs and styles that ranged from ‘60s soul to ‘90s hip-hop to vanguard R&B, ‘Malibu' became one of 2016's most acclaimed albums, establishing its creator as a maverick whose imagination can seem virtually limitless. Along with a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, the album earned Anderson .Paak another Grammy nod for Best New Artist along with similar acknowledgements at the Soul Train Music Awards and the BET Hip Hop Awards.

All that marked a long journey from Anderson .Paak's first foray into music, which was playing drums in church growing up in Oxnard, California. After coming to Los Angeles, he sought to establish himself as a session musician while creating his own sounds under the moniker Breezy Lovejoy. His fortunes rose when he began working for Shafiq Husayn of Sa-Ra, the revered L.A. hip-hop duo and production team. His new confidence inspired him to drop his former handle in favor of Anderson .Paak, a stylized version of his real name. The buzz got louder with the release of his wildly diverse debut, ‘Venice' (2014), and his contributions to albums by Dr. Dre and The Game. And while he fully proved his capabilities with ‘Malibu,' it was ‘Yes Lawd!' (2016) by NxWorries – his duo with producer Knxwledge – as well as shows with his band The Free Nationals that confirmed he's just as compelling with close collaborators on hand as when he's pursuing his singular vision.

His third album and first since signing to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, ‘Oxnard' sees Anderson .Paak introduce yet more colors in his palette, beginning with Technicolor textures, carnivalesque soundscape, and his own exuberant flow in "Bubblin'," the album's first single. And with his return to stages with The Free Nationals, Anderson .Paak is ready to make good on his reputation as one of the exciting new talents in hip-hop and R&B.

    Dope Show

    by M. on 2/21/19Coca-Cola Roxy - Atlanta

All the hits were played, even some hidden gems. Drink prices at the venue were a little high and the "zero-tolerance" policy was a bit over zealous. Overall the show was incredible. And the Roxy is gorgeous.

    Expensive

by DMohican on 2/16/19Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

For the price of GA and the venue he performed at was unexceptable. For that price of admission should of been at the Pepsi Center. Good show but not worth the price!!!

    Freak Fest

by eric2941 on 11/29/17State Street - Freak Fest - Madison

Not sure what y'all are talking about in previous reviews, Freak Fest was a blast! Paak put on an absolutely killer performance. Played a great mix of old and new from Venice to Yes Lawd! It was really cool to see him outside, the entire stage was so full of energy the entire time. And the tickets were only 10 bucks, how can you beat that! I would have payed a lot more.

Anderson .paak & The Free Nationals

by Shambino on 12/14/16Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Firstly, the stage setup was very creative as it invited attendees to check in to the "Malibu Motel." The band members all walk out of one of the "motel rooms" as the NxWorries intro to Yes Lawd! plays them in but just the instrumental. The song abruptly ends to Anderson Paak storming out of a room dressed like he just got lucky with a beautiful lady who also comes out with him. He gets playfully angry as he accuses the band and the attendees of starting the show without him and jumps right into high energy performances of "Come Down", (and brings out T.I.!) "Drugs", "Milk n Honey", etc. As the show progressed, Anderson ditched the high energy turn up to hop on the drums and groove out with the free nationals and the crowd. Later on, we hear the beat drop for the classic Busta Rhymes "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See." Everyone is looking for Busta on stage. Anderson stops the beat and tells the crowd to make noise for Busta while claiming that he really wants to see Busta perform that song. Busta approaches the stage and he and anderson paak perform the classic hip hop track together. Busta then tells the crowd to appreciate the music of anderson paak while he's still here living instead of praising the artist after they pass away. Anderson paak continued the show with some good dancing vibes with songs like "Am I Wrong" and "Lite Weight." The show ended about 3-4 times as the crowd demanded an encore after each time he left the stage. Before the night was officially over, we were all most surprised with the last guest of the evening: The great Stevie Wonder. He came out to wish us all a happy holiday and it was a special moment for everyone including Mr. paak himself.

    Not worth it

    by Chicagojon1 on 11/1/16State Street - Madison

You essentially pay to enter a street that's otherwise free. And while there were some concerts on the street, you couldn't bring alcohol outside. Plus the lines were often 50+ people long. Most people spent the majority of their time waiting in line.

    Not worth the hype

    by StoopidFan22 on 11/1/16State Street - Madison

I essentially paid $13 to get into state street, where I had to wait 25 minutes to get into a half-decent bar. Then I went home. The only time I heard the music was when I was waiting in line. It was fun to see people in costume but otherwise I'm not sure what the point of FreakFest is...

by AyeCoach on 8/1/16House of Blues Las Vegas - Las Vegas

The show exceeded my already high expectations. I have seen shows by Prince, to Beyoncé, to Kanye West to John Mayer, and Anderson .Paak is in my top 5 shows I've ever seen. Consistent energy, vocals are amazing live, sensational on the drums and he brought out the most diverse and beautiful crowd I've ever seen. I will NEVER miss a show in my city when he tours again. He beyond incredible.

Legendary. Such a good time. He really puts his heart and soul into what he does. Hops on the drums when he's not killing it on the mic. One of the best shows ever
