Anaheim Ducks History

What began as a 1992 Disney movie turned into a professional hockey team as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim played their first official season in the NHL in 1993. With the emergence of Paul Kariya in late 1994, Anaheim had its first bona fide superstar.

In 1996, Teemu Selänne arrived via trade, and alongside Kariya helped lead the franchise to its first playoffs appearance in 1997. The Ducks reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2003, where they lost to the New Jersey Devils. Forever etched in Mighty Ducks lore was the knock out delivered upon Kariya by the Devils' Scott Stevens in game six. Kariya would make a hero's return in that game, emerging from the locker room to score and lead the team to victory. Netminder Jean-Sébastien Giguère won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs, becoming the fifth player to win the trophy as a member of the losing team.

Disney sold the franchise to Henry and Susan Samueli in 2005, and the team dropped the "Mighty" from their moniker. With star players on the roster, including future Hall of Fame defensemen Chris Pronger and Scott Nidermayer, the Ducks finished the 2007 season as Stanley Cup Champions, defeating the Ottawa Senators in five games. With Rob Niedermayer also on the roster, the Niedermayers became the first set of brothers to win the Stanley Cup together since the 1980s. The Ducks have been in the playoffs a total of 14 times in their 29 seasons.

    Narrow Seats

by FlacoinFullerton on 11/18/09Honda Center - Anaheim

The seats in Section 440 were way too narrow. I could barely maneuver in my seat. This made for an uncomfortable and miserable evening. The game was great but it was hard to enjoy from these seats.

    by crosbyfan87 on 11/5/09Honda Center - Anaheim

It was awesome! im a southern california penguins fan, and the game was great. not just because the pens won, but overall it was great. there were a great number of pens fan and ducks fans so it made for competitive banter. the game started off with the penguins playing terrible defense and pretty weak attacking but they shaped up and the game was back and forth

I gained a ton of respect for the Ducks.

by MalkinRules on 11/4/09Honda Center - Anaheim

I've been to a lot of bad Hockey venues over the years. Places where they'll sell you a ticket to a seat that's strategically behind an iron beam casually blocking your view. I'm originally from Pennsylvania...home of the movie Slapshot... and used to places that offer the absolute minimum required to pull off a show. I got off the freeway and couldn't help but notice the abundance of parking. I decided to park at the Honda Center. It was expensive... $25 to park there. Which I don't feel was worth it. And here's why. If I had parked at one of the many off venue parking locations (which are directly across the street) I would have to walk a little further. But I'm sure I would have been able to leave faster. The traffic leaving the Honda Center parking was bad. It probably took me an hour to get out of the parking lot. Sure, it was great just getting out of the car and being right there when I arrived. But I know I could have parked off site for $5 and probably gotten home in 20 minutes from another lot. Since it was my first time there I can't complain. I'll have to get used to the parking and scout some places out. Once inside the Honda Center I felt like I was in a hotel. Everything looked new, polished, and I couldn't see any of the typical messes you usually see at a hockey game. Like nachos dumped everywhere, beer cups littering the floor, or walking over some crunchy popcorn. It was so clean looking, I was afraid I'd mess it up just by walking to my seat. I didn't have anything from the concessions stands. I was pretty low on cash after paying for parking. I just decided to watch the game without eating anything. The game was great. I loved the arrangement of the seating. Absolutely no one was in my view during the gameplay. I was only 5 rows up from the Ice. You could see all the hits, the goalie making saves, and I actually heard a puck "whoooshh" through the air right before it cracked off the glass directly in front of me. My entire section flinched when the puck hit. The only thing I didn't like about the seating is that is was cramped. I'm a husky 5'11'' 225. And I fit in the seat. But my knees were slammed up against the seat in front of me. I couldn't get my arms up on the arm wrest to help relax a little. I would have been elbowing the people sitting next to me. The only good part about the chair is that it was cushioned and not hard plastic. After moving to California I've been desperately trying to get my friends interested in Hockey. But most people here in Sol Cal don't even know what it is. So I wasn't expecting to find REAL FANS when I got to the game. I gotta give it to them. The Ducks fans had some great team spirit. There's one player on the Ducks, think his name is Parros or something. And he sports a mean mullet and a huge mustache. There was this one teenaged girl dressed up like him. Had a big mullet wig and the obviously fake mustache. When I first saw her I couldn't figure out why she was dressed up. But then I saw Parros skate out on the ice I busted out laughing when I made the connection. The fans were polite and tolerant of the visiting crowd. I wasn't heckled or threatened like I have been at other places back east. (Ugh.... Devils and Philly games were always interesting) I have to say I gained a lot of respect for the Ducks and their fans. I mean, I'll always be a Pens fan at heart. But I'm a resident here now. And I would love to go and take part of that tiny fire they are stoking over there at the Pond and keeping hockey alive in Southren California. I think I'll be buying a Parros jersey in the near future.... uh... minus the mullet and mustache.

    Hockey night in Anaheim

by DucksfanSanDiego on 11/4/09Honda Center - Anaheim

Seats and sight lines great. Game great particularly the goaltenders, even though Ducks lost. Commercialism too much with flying cows dropping mattress coupons, etc. Give us a break. Parking difficult after the game trying to exit. Ducks fans need to get more into it. Penguins fans made more noise than Ducks fans. Is sexy-dressed Ducks girls posing with little kids appropriate?

The Penguins are the best team in the league. How could you not want to see the defending Stanley Cup Champions showcase their talent?

Excellent game. The Ducks gave the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins a bit of a challenge at times but Pittsburgh won (of course)!!

Good start for me, but Ducks took over!!

by xDjEpYOnx on 11/2/09Honda Center - Anaheim

I went as a supporter for the Canucks since I took my older brother(tix were gift for his bday earlier this month) and others. Canucks scored two early in the first, before I got into my seat actually, but overall, the game and atmosphere was great. Had been a while since I had gone to another Ducks game, and first time at Honda Center(I'll have to think about that) but the game was great and the arena was equally good.

Toronto gets first win over undisciplined Ducks

    by jdw3rd74 on 10/27/09Honda Center - Anaheim

One question!!! Why would the city of Anaheim spent a billion dollars on such a fancy, marbled arena, yet spend 3 cents on the actual seating? The chairs we and every else sat in looked like they were pulled out of a Goodwill scrap pile, welded into the floor, beat, torn, and shredding padding seating to boot!!! I called the winner of this game two weeks ago. Randy Carlise has no control over these "so called players". The Leafs earned the victory!

Ducks lost but what a game !!

by tintdokter on 10/27/09Honda Center - Anaheim

Never been to the Honda Center before this, never been to a hockey game before this... excellent experience. Parking was easy, but not cheap, the entrance was easy to see and was quick to get through security and into the event. Good concessions with $$$ beers. The girls and gorgeous and all the fans seemed to be in good spirits. Good times.......

    The Ducks Game

by TrossTEACH on 10/25/09Honda Center - Anaheim

HMMM... good tickets - even though they were high up - hey, you get what you pay for. But then someone spilled a coke... and it flowed down under our seats. YUCK. Ducks also lost the game, but there was some scoring on both sides at least.

by ilovepatron on 10/23/09Honda Center - Anaheim

Seats where Awesome, the 2 fights where Awesome, Beers where Awesome, the 2 -3 loss not Awesome. No bad seats at the Honda Center, great facility, well except for smokers, the 3 flights of stairs gets very tiring.

    Great Experience!

by LDCCC on 10/19/09Honda Center - Anaheim

We were in Anaheim to visit Disneyland over a long weekend. However, once I heard the Ducks were in town, I snuck out with my young son and we attended the Ducks / Blues game while the girls went back to Disney for the evening. The game itself stunk (Ducks lost 5-0), but what impressed me was how professional the security staff were...they were all dressed in suits and ties -- very crisply dressed; not the usual "I just woke up in my suit look" you see at a lot of other venues. Also, the Honda Center itself was a really nice venue. It was clean, the retail / food / usher staff were all curteous and helpful and parking was a breeze -- especially when leaving after the game. I go to a lot of sporting / concerts events all over the country and this was one of the best / most pleasant experiences yet. Hats off to the entire management and staff. Great job everyone!!! We'll be back. Hopefully, the Ducks will show up and play next ....

    NHL is back!

    by Nikki024 on 10/5/09Honda Center - Anaheim

As a huge Ducks fan, the game was one of the most depressing I've ever been to - outside of the 3rd period when the Ducks tried to wake up and make it a game. That being said, I go into withdrawals in the summer without hockey and am glad to have it back for another exciting season ... don't be fooled, the Ducks will get better as the season progresses, and I will be back to cheer on my team!! GO DUCKS GO!!!

    The Ducks got worked!

    by marti155 on 10/4/09Honda Center - Anaheim

The first game of the 2009-10 Ducks season was my first Hockey Game. I've wanted to go to one, but never had until last night. I enjoyed the Pond, and the atmosphere, but the Ducks didn't have a good opener. They got worked by the San Jose Sharks. I don't know much about the game of Hockey, but it was obvious that San jose was too much for the Ducks. I am very glad I went to watch the game, and will do it again. I was in awe of all the players' ability to manuever themselves on the ice! They are truely gifted, and well prepared for all the action. I can see why so many people follow this game. It's non stop action, and full of energy. The only thing that would have made this an Amazing event would have been a win for the Ducks.
