After having read some glowing reviews of this new musical and loving the theater, we bought tickets for a Friday night. I want to preface by saying that we enjoyed the show, as we love attending productions at the Civic Theater and the dancing was incredible. However, we must be honest that we both left feeling somewhat disappointed by the lack of plot and seemingly weak characters. The lead female character Lise is the love interest of three different men, and there is literally no explanation why; viewers are left to assume that they all simply glance at her and fall in love and want to be with her forever, without any hint of her personality. I suppose that somewhat makes sense for a show based on a 1960s movie. Nothing against the actress, who did a beautiful job, but the character of Lise was incredibly boring and it was just altogether baffling why there was such a fuss over her...and that was the whole plot of the play. We also had not realized that this show had so much ballet. Particularly in Act II, there was so much ballet dancing to instrumental music and not nearly as much dialogue or singing; it sometimes felt as though we were attending a modern ballet. The dancing was incredibly good, but if you're not super into ballet, it was a bit boring at times. Again, this is nothing against the performers, who were all very talented. All in all, we enjoyed our night out to the theater, but this is not a show we would feel the need to see again.
